Serenity Might Fly Again?

Loni Peristere, visual-effects supervisor for the SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that there's hope for future flights of the cast and crew of the movie, which just came out on DVD. Director Joss Whedon—who also created the canceled Fox TV show Firefly, on which the movie is based—expected that the movie might draw the low numbers it did in its theatrical release, Peristere said in an interview. But he added that the movie's sales on DVD, which came out on Dec. 20, are running neck-and-neck with the hit comedy Wedding Crashers, which bodes well for a possible Serenity sequel.

"We kind of expected this from our audience," Peristere said. "We did so well on [Amazon.com] with the Firefly box set and the performance of that helped us get the movie made. We wish the audience would get up and go to the theater, but it shows that they like to keep coming back and revisiting the world Joss created." Serenity made $25 million at the domestic box office after it was released Sept. 30.

Whedon and his crew are waiting to see how well the DVD numbers go before proceeding with a Serenity sequel, Peristere said. "We really hope to return to this work," he said. "We love the characters. It's fun storytelling, and we all love using our talents. ... It all depends on Joss. He's not giving up on the characters. He had incredible writers who had a million stories to tell, and we're all just hanging out and seeing what the world has to give us, and given the opportunity we'll make more."

In the meantime, fans of both show and movie can enjoy the DVD's various extras, which include an Easter egg: a featurette about the making of the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial that appears in the film. "In the main menu, if you play around with the buttons you'll find a featurette of the Fruity Oaty Bar," Peristere revealed. (From the main menu highlight "play," then press left, which will highlight a marker on the right side of the menu; press enter to see the featurette.) "It's all a lot of fun," he said.

This is great, I am so excited for this series! Sounds like the dvd sales are doing real great even though there are no advertisements for serenity and Wedding crashers are still getting adverts...

When it comes out in the UK I'm running, not walking to the store. For the first 350 yards. Then I'll be crawling probably. I'll let you know if anyone carries me.

And then I'll run in again! And buy Seven Samurai, or that wonderful film Sideways, or probably that frankly astonishing 'Edge of Darkness' BBC mythic thriller.

Only one copy for me. Nobody tells NervousPete what to do. Especially when he has a viewing list a mile long.

However, rest assured I will nag others.

This is 100% fan driven too. I highly doubt non-Serenity fans would buy the DVD from the cover art or blurb on the back. Buy more DVDs! Give them to others! Can we get a donation drive to buy DVDs for some needy group of folks? I've bought four DVDs now -- I'm greatly running out of people to give them to! *sigh* Guess it is time for "Plan B": Buy copies of Serenity, find cars with open doors or windows, place a copy in their car. If I don't get shot, think of all the new fans I could make!!?!

I´d love to see her fly again. I think i´ll buy at least four copies: The German DVD, the american 2DVD-Box and the Australian, and maybe the german extended, if there will be stuff like this.
Imagine what you can tell your grandchildren if they ask you "Wow, Grampa, you´be been watching this milestone of SciFi`Serenity´-Movie at least once a week for more than 20 Years now." "Yes my dear, and my last will is to be buried with `em. Can´t stop the Signal darling. Can´t stop the Signal..."

Ahem... okay, that might sound a little obsessed... uhm... never mind ;)

That's a great idea! What idiot executive cancelled the show in the first place? I have never seen a show where the actors were so comfortable with their characters right off the bat. I love Star Trek, but I have to say, that the first 12 episodes of TNG, DS9, and Voyager should have cancelled those series as well, the acting was so bad and the characters so ackward. Firefly blows them away, but some idiot reality show lover executive decides that WE don't want to see Sci-Fi shows, we need more Survivor. Firefly has left me needing to know these characters more, and I hope we all get that chance. I have a few people I can buy the DVD for, if I can find it!

Hey, don't go being mean to DS9, that was my favorite Star Trek series.

Anyways, when the inevitable special edition comes out, we can spend a bunch more money on it again and hopefully, Universal will make a BDS.

Sorry! Wasn't trying to be mean. DS9 is also my favorite. But the characters of all the Star Trek series didn't really become endearing until late in the first season, or early in the second. What I was trying to say, not so gracefully, was that if they hadn't had the words Star Trek in front of them, I don't think they would have made it. The characters of Firefly are so interesting and so well played, I just don't understand how it could be cancelled! I don't think it was even given a chance! I guess I'm still in the denial stage.

I was just messing with you. No harm meant. Though I really do agree with the fact that the characters grew on you on DS9, whereas on Firefly, I immediately had my favorites and loved all of those people. It was cancelled mainly because of poor advertisement, a horrible slot time, and Joss and the execs usually didn't see eye to eye, and example being that they aired The Train Job first instead of Serenity, the pilot.

The reasons the ratings were so bad on Firefly were:

A: They had it take on MLB playoffs

B: THEY PLAYED IT OUT OF ORDER SO IT DIDN"T MAKE SENSE! The first episode THEY showed was "Train job." So halfway through the season, all of a sudden, everybody's just meeting Simon, the Sheppard, and River has been in cryogenic sleep for weeks! It failed because of Fox's inability to be inteligent!

C: NO ADVERTISING! I didn't know Firefly even existed until I found the box set in the store after the show was cancelled. I watched Fox all the time. Now, I refuse!

FOX blames Joss for the failed show, but when you see the above, you realize that FOX is run by idiots

I give 'em to two to four years... Joss has Wonder Woman and Goners to do... it generally takes three years to make a movie from scratch. About two years for a sequel.

That doesn't mean people can't do only one thing at a time... but... it does mean that I've got a feeling that he is going to be more focused on other projects for a while.

This means though... keep buying the DVD... keep it high in the Must Want category... with the revenue that this could create and the amount of browncoats made every day this next movie or next series/show could be blockbuster material. We all just need to be patient... and persistant.

Brilliance is like 4WD... I allows you to get stuck in even more remote places...

Yes. I waited for Firefly. Watched the first episode, cringing, thinking, "Joss, this will never make it." After a couple more episodes, came to love it. Did my bit contributing to the cost of the Variety advertisement, likewise one of the Big Damn Cakes that were sent to the cast/crew. When the show was canceled, with three episodes never to be seen and no DVDs in sight, I stopped watching TV. Really. Haven't watched TV since. Why should I? I watch a lot of DVDs, though.

BTW people, if you don't know already, "Space: Above and Beyond" is on DVD.

And now the waiting begins. Will there be more TV? A movie sequel? Super-Extended Special DVD editions? No one knows, but we all want to do our part, even knowing it could be a losing battle.

There's something very familiar about this feeling. Ahh, yes. This is what it was like after the series was cancelled.

Of course, much as I hated that experience, and am not looking forward to reliving it, I just can't give up. I'm a Browncoat. Fighting uphill battles against all odds is what we do.

Just a random thought here, but about a month ago the Fox show 'Bones' made a clear reference to Firefly in its opening dialogue. I figure a nice package of DVD's and Sets for the writer's would be really well received. Not sure how to go about this but it might be worth a shot. If we continue to invade pop-culture with references to Serenity-Firefly I can't see anything but good coming from it, especially a BDS!!

Here is an amazing story for all to read.

I hate Sci Fi, it never interested me. One day I went to this really cheap movie theatre and saw a movie called Serenity. Although Serenity served as the begining to what many call an end. I think it was what opened the door. This is the first SciFi show that I like.. no love and the first show which I have ever been obsessed about. I am actually writing this from work, thats how obsessed I am. After I saw the movie, I went out and purchased the TV series, and I put my name on the waiting list on Amazon for the movie. This movie can convert anyone, I have single handed got more that 10 people to open up and enjoy a real TV show.

I just felt like sharing :biggrin

Oh yeah make sure you vote for the return of serenity on the sci fi link.

GLOBLABSURDITY

Thanks for sharing, FOXMUSTDIE, our stories resemble each other. I saw the movie on a whim, what a great day that turned out to be. I hit the internet as soon as I got home & found out about Firefly. Went out the next day and purchased the set--spending the rest of the day watching all the episodes. You'd have to know me to understand that this is not my normal behavior--nor do I become obsessed with television series. Obsessed is the key word here--and it resembles me--ha!
Since then, I've had may converts & have purchased ten copies of the BDM for Christmas gifts. Everybody in our family is a proud owner. My in-laws have my Firefly set--for two weeks now, and I'm having withdrawal symptoms--lol. Thinking I'll be purchasing another set and leaving the in-laws with the first. Seems they must really like it.

I'm not sure I'm going to buy multiple copies either. I've never been the type to buy extras, and I refuse to buy the BDM or the show for people as gifts if they've never seen it. I don't like the thought of our BDHs sitting on someone's shelf and not being seen. However, after the conversion...

Don't worry, I'm compensating by scooping up all of the books and comics I can get my grubby little mitts on.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!

Farscape was this way too. I'm really surprised that people aren't comparing Firefly's season one to Farscape's. Both came out incredibly strong from the first episode.

Brings up an intresting debate though. Could Firefly have maintained this momentum for multiple seasons? This is something that Farscape could not accomplish, as by season 3, it did not resemble what we had seen earlier (IMHO). We'll certainly never know.

So, does the bulb that shines twice as bright, last half as long?

"The last thing I want is that any of our descendents should look back in some years and despise us for not daring to act when we had so much capacity to act. We must dare to seek how, why and on what we agree. We shall thus be able to join together to look for alternative solutions and new ways of managing the world's challenges. Being diverse is our richness, acting together will be our strength". (Federico Mayor; 02-04-01;

Causal said it, y'all. We're browncoats and we'll fight a battle outnumbered, underpaid, and weak, but we'll still fight because every day our ranks our growing and our spirit strengthens. We can win this war and get our show back, I just know it.
Keep runin' up that hill, browncoats. The enemy (ie, Fox) has lost the higher ground for long enough for Joss to make a movie. If we keep pushing I'm sure we'll beat them off eventually.

Blue Star Mothers already send tons of stuff a week. We just need to get the videos into their hands.

I think Right now there are more or less 150,000 troops in threater. They dont all need the video. but at a company level this could be achieved.

Fox Execs --- phooey!

I've been impressed by the number of people who've bought from this group ( http://www.cafepress.com/blood_love_etc/811178). But then, FOX has made it their business to leave a lot of people sore about the loss of beloved shows.

I try and console myself that they will, in there is justice in the afterlife, be forced to watch their own crappy reality programming 'round-the-clock for eternity. Oh yes, they *will* suffer!

Last time we raised box-sets for thetroops it was a grand success. Look through the archives here and you'll find some details.

I seem to remember that it was easier to work with the navy from a tech p.o.v. The sets in Iraq may not be NTSC or something; they definitely are on the ships.

I would also receommend buying a copy of the boxset and the movie and donating them to your local library, assuming they carry dvd's. It is amazing how many people watch movies from the library. And they're more willing to take a chance on something since they don't have to pay; it's a constant fan-converter.

Yes it is, and the UK trailer was much better than what we got in the US. I'm convinced that had we have had that trailer in US theaters, we would have done better in that opening week.

I agree, I want more episodes. It should start back right where it left off, and I want to see River freak everybody out with her slow realization of her unique abilities. The interaction between the characters is part of what makes it such a success, and I don't want to miss a second of it. I'm not one to obsess either, or buy excess, but I will for this show.

...and it is much cheaper ("30% off") for you than it is for me despite it's practically the same DVD (the ASIN number is identical to the one at German Amazon). Strange pricing system

EDIT: I did the math and the exact difference is about £7.00 (according to the current Euro/Pound exchange rate). Shipping not included which means this is an actual difference

I guess this is the penalty for taking the UK shortcut instead of waiting another several months for an official German release. I can see no other reason.

For the UK release (Which I've just pre-ordered from Amazon.co.uk), the cover art is different, and much better!

Damn, you're right. That's much better. I hope we in the US get that cover if/when we get a 2-disc special edition (I can dream, can't I? ). I don't much care for the US cover.

Just have to add this: SUMMER IS SMOKIN' HOT!!!

Howdy fellow browncoats, I have just recently joined the ranks with a story not unlike many of yours. I saw the Firefly series on Fox, and enjoyed it, but not to the extent that I do today. It was often hard to catch, and aired out of order. I was happy when I saw that the Sci-Fi channel had picked it up, but it was still hard for me to see the show. When I finally saw the movie however, my intrest was completely revamped and I recently purchaced the DVD box set. I can't stop watching and don't want to. Do yall think that perhaps a video game could emerge from the Firefly verse that could generate revenue and and enough new fan interest to help get Serenity back in the black? I loved Microsoft's freelancer, and they're making games out of everything these days, and movies from games.

Yeah I can see playing a video game based on Serenity. I would buy the game.

I never even heard of Firefly until a couple months before the movie was released. Then I saw the show on the Sci fi channel and now own Firefly and Serenity. Everything that Joss makes is good I hope to see more from him in the future.

I would certainly buy the video game, even if it sucked! Just cause. I hope there's a special edition DVD... and so much more!

Thats awesome!
The first movie didnt do that well at the box office, but thats only because no one knew what it was. The movie brought so many more fans to Firefly and if they had a sequal i guarantee they would double there numbers. Everyone is aware of this show and will give it the respect it deserves.

Right On! Right ruttin' on! Fox is as fucked up as a football bat for not keeping our show running. The execs must have their heads in a nice warm dark place. I no longer watch F*x, the programming makes me ill and I personaly have no use for reality in any case. All I want, simple enough, is our 'Verse back and on TV. Then I want ANOTHER MOVIE!!!

IMPERIALKNIGHT

This show appeals to all of us, even those of us who don't like Sci-Fi because it gives us characters aren't the perfect little prodigal children all adhering to a single mold like Star Trek nor living in the impossibly heightened hyper-reality of Star Wars but are deep, intelligent, compelling, and above all real people locked in a world where virtue is not always rewarded and the good guys do not necessarily win. I believe that these corporate empires with their love affair for easy profit killed our show because its uniqueness, intelligence, and artistic strength paled in comparison to the force of their rapaciously deaf, dumb, and blind greed.

My point in all of this is that if we can't force Universal to restart Joss' short-lived masterpiece by playing by the rules then let's change them. The weakness in leaving it to Universal is essentially the same as leaving it to FOX (with some differences, but the same fundamental problem). “Selling” as Joss himself admits may not Joss' strong suit, but artistic vision is. The goal is to transform the equation entirely.

We are the central force in keeping Serenity flying so perhaps that is the way to restore the show to TV AND keeping it alive on the big screen. Star Trek and Star Wars did it, so why not Firefly?

Many of us (old guard and newfound conscripts alike) have already proven our devotion to the cause in the only language these suits understand: money. These suits have the power and influence to resurrect Firefly back to TV format but are seemingly blind to our incredible victory in taking a show that lasted only thirteen episodes and impressing a demigod of a conglomerate enough to make a major motion picture (which still didn't get the saturation advertising (commercials on primetime networks advertising both the movie and the SERIES in one 30sec+ package) nor marketing (in the form of enough theaters) to give it a chance to truly fly). As I said, we might need to re-think our strategy.

Here is the crux of what I propose:

1. Joss forms a corporation whose purpose is to buy Firefly’s way back into existence as a series. This corporation like all corporations will have shares so we browncoats can in essence buy ownership and share a stake in Firefly’s success. We can control Firefly's destiny instead of sacrificing massive amounts of money to dimwitted shortsighted suits only interested in cheap profit. We can use this ownership to negotiate with Sci-fi (owned by Universal) and buy a decent timeslot and pick up the series with the same cast, writers, director, etc. under Joss's direction. Then he won't have to continually "sell" his vision to those unsymPathetic fools because we will directly harness Firefly's resurgence. Of course, this requires an investment (note that the purchase of shares will provide dividends) from us in Joss' foundling company sufficient for it to go public. Once public, our options will increase and Joss can guide Firefly’s fate back to the forum it was meant to be in the first place. We can, at Joss' direction, promote the series properly through mass media and in junction with Sci-fi to bring the series back to life. From an investor’s point of view even if the corp. ultimately failed the investor is likely to recover most of his money anyway. This is just one idea, but I haven't heard anyone mention it before so I thought I'd offer it. By relying directly on our own strength and minimizing the powers of those suits that do not care about anything greater than the bottom line TODAY, Firefly might live to fly again in the way it was meant to. (And Universal can keep making movies while we keep Serenity flying on TV). Or…

2. (Adaptation of 1.) Universal offers Firefly fans a chance to contribute money directly to a fund specifically set aside for the express purpose of providing Firefly the funds required to pay either wholly or in some fixed part the cost of one season of the revitalized series on Sci-Fi at a decent timeslot. Same cast, crew, direction, etc as before, picking right up where the series left off. Once enough money has been acquired, the season restarts. Once Firefly has expanded its audience to its potential, then Sci-Fi agrees to run the series on its own tab without direct contribution for five years at least. Naturally, this could be easy or hard – the devil’s in the details. Or…

3. We continue to buy Firefly stuff and do the marketing department’s jobs for them by spreading the word and converting people to the show until even the suits are impressed enough and (by osmosis) germinate up the IQ points required to get the idea of bringing the series back to life and actually fork over the dough to do it. If this turns out to be the case then let’s just hope that they won’t pull another FOX on us.

To paraphrase Wash, ‘Let’s cut out the middleman, and give [the power] directly to the people. The pay’s better and we make sure help gets to where it needs to go’. Any more ideas?

One such possiblity is currently in work by another browncoat by the moniker of THEANTIREAVER living in Vancover (that's right, near the estate of Jewel Staite (Kailee)). His idea is to utilize the internet to collect pledges to get us back to the black on the small screen. He is currently collecting mock pledges at last count totaling (based on his last mock sum and adding the minimums promised) approx. 51,665 USD + 2,400 pounds + 500 euros (I'm too tired to look up the conversion, do it yourselves)). You can read more on his ideas in the thread entitled "ITS TIME! Post How much you would personally give to Joss Whedon & Co. to get our Ship in the air AGAIN!" but from what I gather our mock pledges will affords us two things (1) the ability to enlist ANTIREAVER's copyright laywer and web designer friends in handling the legalise and web design involved in the creation of a web site bound by a strict financial contract that honors all copyright law whose pledges will restore our show to Television and (2) to tell "Joss and Company who you are and how much money you are actually willing to put on the table to make Firefly a series again."(ANTIREAVER) This will be a primarily internet accessed, advertised, and syndicated effort to collect and focus our individual efforts to the pursuit of our common goal. Futher details as to the praticality and sincerity of this effort are contained in the thread I mentioned.

They thought they killed us in 13 episodes with their overwhelming incompetance, gross negligence, and inbred stupidity but we held. We hold Serenity valley still and that makes us mighty. We have grown in both numbers and strength since our enemy left us to wither and die after striking the mortal blow those years ago. Now is the time to unite for one more charge, my fellow browncoats. Let's drive them from our valley and knock them outta our sky!!!

Long Live the Empire!!!

HAEKELDRACHE

What a moving speech! I totally agree in most of your points ImperialKnight, I think that we could (and should?) do more than filling the moneybags of FOX and universal. It´s time to start on our OWN!

To say it with the approximate word´s seen on a `From Dusk till dawn´ Poster:

"One fight is all that stands between us and Firefly. But it´s going to be one hell of a fight" ;)

Keep it Flying!!
