I'm one of the older people here too and I'm glad to see i'm not the only one:

First LP, Meet the Beatles, I was six. I loved John Lennon and was going to marry him when I grew up.

I evolved into a hard-core Pink Floydian. I was singing along with "Dark side of the Moon" when I was 14 and I still do, at 48. David Gilmour's guitar riffs make me.... giddy.

CAPELLA

My first record (well, the first I bought myself, at least) was the single "Take on me" by a-ha. I don't know if they were successful in the US or Canada. It was a real hit all over Europe in 1984 (so, now you know how old I probably am... )

Have fun,
Capella

"Kriss Kross'll make ya jump jump! Daddy Mack'll make ya jump jump! Mack Dad'll make ya jump jump! Uhhuh uhhuh!"

Ahem, now that I've thoroughly embarassed myself, I'll say the Kriss Kross cd was the first one I bought, when I was very young. I think I heard the whole thing once. And I definitely don't listen to them anymore. I stopped at most a year after they came out (they didn't last long). And in retrospect they suck so horribly it's funny.

"Warm it up Kriss!"

I'm a leaf on the wind. Watch me soar.

I grew up with cassets so I don't remember what my first one was, maybe Wizard of Oz.

My first CD was the soundtrack for Stephen Sommer's The Mummy. I actually had to buy a CD player to listen to it. lol I still listen to it a bit and enjoy it.

It was two 45's when I was 12 years old. I'm a believer by the Monkees and Ruby Tuesday/Let's spend the night together by the Mick Jagger and his crew. It was in 1966 about the time I watched Star Trek on Friday nights. I am so old.

I love that song! I was a real sucker for one-hit wonders back then, too bad I couldn't afford to buy the singles.

My very first music purchase came late in life (I was almost 14!) and was two 45's on the same day:

Jackson 5: ABC
Beatles: Let It Be

I still love 'em both. My mother has my shoebox full of about a hundred 45's somewhere in storage, but my sister got mad at me and took a nail file to 'em. Without getting punished. When I took a nail file to 6 of her albums, I got whupped. Still steamed about that.

I can't remember what I bought, but the first tapes I ever received I got at 10 years old (and at the same time...Christmas).

1. Debbie Gibson Out of the blue

2. Dirty Dancing Soundtrack (lol Hungryyyy Eyyyyes)

3. Journey's Greatest Hits

What were my parents trying to do to me? Of course, I still love Journey. And I listen to Debbie when I want to feel like a kid again.

Oh dear - here goes.

First LP: The Wombles album (it was the 70's and I was very young).
First Cassette: Shakin' Stevens - Green Door.
First Vinyl Single: Duran Duran - The Reflex.
First CD: Extreme - Pornograffiti

I believe I have good taste now but back then it was another case entirely. I also bought around that time: Bucks Fizz, Chas + Dave and Agadoo!! I put it down to being young and naive and not clued in to the wonder of proper music. (I still think Pornograffiti is a great album).

Well that's my confession so I'll go and drink three bloody mary's and make up for it when I buy the Chili Peppers new album on Monday.

Hmmm...lets see.
1st with my own money: "Beauty and the Beast" Original Boradway Cast recording. I was 7 and had a summer "job" picking weeds in my neighborhood.

1st ever: Abbey Road-The Beatles, with my Dad at a Tower Records when I was 4. He thought he needed to start a "proper, well rounded musical education of actual music and not the bubblegum shit they play for kids now a days" early.

Oo Oo Oooooo! I remeber Nazareth, my boyfriend of the time had Hair of the Dog and I loved it.

Can't remeber a blasted thing about it now except that I loved it.

Thanks for the trip (short but sweet down memory lane.)

Eh, get out of my head! My brother and I combined had all of Petra, all of Undercover, all of Michael W. Smith, Keith Green, etc. I even spent some time tracking down Undercover's greatest hits on CD. I had to travel quite far to purchase Volume #2 from some Christian bookstore guy who was willing to sell. Petra's "The Coloring Song" was a favorite of mine growing up. Don't listen to much Christian music these days, except for the ocassional Switchfoot....

For answers to the post:

First 45: Shaun Cassidy: Da-do Run Run
First album: Johnny Cash Children's Album
First CD: Voice of the Beehive: Honey Lingers

StillShiny: back in the day we used to get the youth director to let us take U2 with us to camp because "they were a christian band." I remember being in Algebra 2 as a freshman and talking to this senior about U2 and he was like, "Huh?" Little did he know.

I think these days I still avoid Christian music because 1)most of it sounds the same and 2)My mom went through a phase where I was only allowed to listen to Christian music. 'Course this came from a mother who raised us as wee ones on The Eagles, The Beatles, America, Neil Diamond Fleetwood Mac, etc.

I think mine was a cassette of En Vogue. Or it might of been News Kids on The Block. I don't remember the exact timeline, but it would have happened during the mid-late 80s and it was definitely a cassette tape. Not long after, I was a moody preteen with a CD player and a newly-bought Nevermind. I grew out of the New Kids phase within a few months, but the Nirvana phase hasn't gone away yet.

First music I bought with my own not hard-earned $ (allowance) were 45's, and I can't remember specifically what it was. Possibly, the theme to "All in the Family," or "Amazing Grace," or most horrendously, some crap from the Osmonds. .............First record? Again, can't remember, could have been **shudder** The Osmonds or Shaun Cassidy or Partridge Family...........I think my year older sister might have saved me from having truly putrid taste in music by bringing home Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones and the Who and Pink Floyd and Jeff Beck and Bruce Springsteen...........thank you Julie. I hope you are resting in peace now.

As a child, you tend to make some gastly mistakes music-wise. So I'm going to spare myself some embarassment and list the first CD of good music I bought. I think around Christmas when I was ten or eleven I bought Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins and Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt. Also in that group was Falling Into You by Celine Dion, but we're going to forget that we heard that, aren't we?
