Hello...I'm new here to the Firefly Community...but I'm just curious. Has anyone here played the game Freelancer? And is it just me, or does the storyline from Freelancer sound similar to Firefly?

The storyline does sound familiar, but for my money the game was crap.

Depends on what you like I guess, but the basic gameplay seemed to boil down to listening to rumours and taking subsequent job offers in a pretty linear fashion, building up your capabilities as you go. A little imagination might have allowed for something like Firefly but Freelancer ain't it.

I don't know...I like the Multiplayer game, especially the server I'm playing on. The single player game was pretty good too. I just wish they had at least put in three more "campaign" missions.

On the other hand, I was a big fan of the Wing Commander games (especially Privateer), so I guess I'm a sucker for games like that.

But I was talking about the introduction cinematic at the beginning of the game...it kind of reminded me of the Firefly intro story.

If you want a Firefly-like game, I think that the Escape Velocity series is a closer match than Freelancer. In fact, when I first saw FF, I was reminded of it.

Now available for Windows, as well as the traditional Mac version. Also, total-conversion plugs for the first two EV games allow Windows users to experience those games through the EV: Nova engine. Only registered users can use plugs, though. My favorite of the EV games is EV: Override.

Your all wrong!

The game, Firefly reminded me totally, is I-War 2: Edge of Chaos. It's a pretty hard peace of a game, but the atmosphere is totally great and somehow very likely to Firefly.

Story:
First you are a boy. After your fathers death you find out that youre grandmother was a pretty succesfull space pirates. You find her old base. But soon after that you get cought by the police (Alliance?) and get to jail. After several years you can break out, with several other people who become your crew (pretty mixed up buch of people like on Serenity).
At this point you can choose to follow the storyline or make your own life. You can take some jobs (and by jobs I mean not "go there and destroy this" like in Freelancer). You can make a pirates life, by ambushing transportships. There are some unnknown vessels, who attack ships without reasons, they call them marauders (reavers?).

Anyway the story makes a lot of fun. But its pretty hard and annoying if you have to repeat missions on and on.

-----------------------------
Yes there are Fireflyfans all over the world. Even in little switzerland.

Yeah, I actually bought that game because it reminded me so much of Freelancer. I enjoyed it quite a bit myself.

Speaking of I-War2 EoC
has anyone played I-War 1, by any chance?
If you like to play a REAL space sim, play I-War.
A story with 4(!) different outros, the most realistic physics engine. You don't fly a lame fighter but a 150 meter long corvette class ship and you've got a crew of 4 members on board. The members are most of the time uncertain what to do next and argue in really funny (a bit FF like) dialogues about it. Its a freakin cool game, what a shame it has no Multiplayer, but it still is one of the best games ever, at least for me.

Wow, thanks Hardan! I downloaded a demo and then went out and bought it from the bargain rack. What a great game. I don't know how I missed it. Engaging story, intriguing gameplay. I need to get a joystick though, as there is a fair amount of maneuvering to do. Looks great so far though.

RAVENGER

I worked on both the original I-War and Edge of Chaos games, and when I first heard of Firefly I thought it sounded similar to the story and backgrounds of those games.

When I saw the first few Firefly episodes I was really hooked by the show, and really struck again by how similar it was to the games I'd worked on. I've now got the DVD box set, and loving every minute of it/

There's even some shots in the series that look very similar to some of the cut-scenes in the games.

One in particular is the sequence where Serenity finds the abandoned cargo ship, and it tumbles over and over illuminated by a searchlight. There's a cutscene in I-War that's almost identical to that.
