Ok, well bouy'd up by the rush of getting my ticket sorted, I went to look at some fabric today, out side of my usual lurking in my local abakahns (fabric shop just up the road form me)

I found lots of lovely fabrics in this colour

(round about, some where a richer shade)

Unfortunetly made the mistake of looking in the furnishings fabrics section -although a meter is not unreasonable -£10/$17, you can't order any less than three.

I did find a rather nice silk dupion (synthetic)for about £5, a little thin, but extra layer of lining should compensate.

what i did find though was a beautiful (synthetic) suede, It felt gorgeous, and was only £2.99 a meter!

but was only available in this colour -

(again, richer shade)

So let me know what you think!

(the purple was in a remnants shop, if you like it i'll have to be quick!)

The suede sounds lovely, but I want to stay away from purple as Mai has staked out purple as her colour for her piratey costume (which I may end up making for her, long story.)

What about the synthetic silk dupion? What colour was that? A blue like the one you showed me? That sounds divine! I love that blue. I looks to me like a pale robin's egg blue?

And remember what I said-you need me to send you cashy money you just say the word!!

oh, thats a pity, its beutiful fabric and an absolute bargain. I may just get a meter and stash it anyway.

The silk dupion was that blue colour I showed you, an little bit more of an intense blue. It is pretty, kind of a rough uneven texture, but a very glossy finish. I'm gona head back into town and pick up a meter, see if I can find some suitable lining fabric. (coutil, the stuff I should be using, proves very hard to find and is never less than about $25-30 a meter.poot)

So canvas or calico (any kind of thick, close-weave cotton) it is.

Right, this is what I was planning - peached cotton (brushed so the surface is soft) next to the skin

layer of canvas or two layers of calico (depending on suitability, cost effectiveness)

Outer fabric (silk, taffeta, suede if I can find it)

If both lining and outer fabric are mounted on a layer of calico, (or just the outer on the canvas layer) then that should be fairly simple, comfortable, and it should last pretty much forever.

Costs so far, as far as I can remember, I've spent about $90 on bones, bought some tools and stuff, but you wont get charged for them. the silk fabric that you like is about $9, the calico, for two meters, $10. Not sure how much much the canvas would be, still looking for it. soft brushed cotton if you want it around the $10 mark as well, though I am trying to find cheaper for all these (gone are the days when I could buy 30m calico for £30. I miss london)then its just eyelets and strings and stuff, small bits.

so thats around $74 so far. you've already bought my ticket, so.

I'm not really worried about you sending money here though. I'd actually prefer you to send it to Jadehand when he needs it to help pay my share of the rooms.

I'm still really leary of setting a price on my work time, having real issues with this. There a little voice in my head thats saying 'well, national minimum wage is a fiver, a corset is a solid weeks worth of work...' but that brings the total to about £200/$350. Which I am not prepared to charge you.
So I'm tempted to say if you find out the final amount for rooms for each person, and depending on it being substantially less than that (I think its somewhere around the $160 mark), you cover it, and we call that settled?

If you can afford it, i'm happy doing that.

I think me paying for your hotel would be more than fair.

Don't sell yourself short, though. You're putting a lot of effort into this and you deserve to be compensated for it.

You warned me ahead of time that this would be expensive so I'm prepared for that.

But as it is, count on my paying for your hotel room and the ticket, which is at least $200 on my end. And then we'll settle up.

My only concern is that you're fronting all the money to buy all the materials and I know it's expensive.

Oh, the silk dupion sounds even nicer once you described it! I love raw silk.

Do you think once we've settled on a fabric for certain (and maybe a few bits of trimming) you could throw a small swatch in an envelope for me so I can have the colours to work on on my end? For the skirts and whatnot.

Oh, Mai found a wonderful pattern that I'm going to try to find that has a great skirt that I think will look fantastic under the corset. It has an overskirt and then, of course, the underskirt that shows. Very saucy.

oh sure, of course. I'll throw it in the post asap.

To be honest, I would have ended up just making one up anyway, just to see, this way I am getting costs back, and I get to make one for myself as practice and then another to get perfect, so as long as you'll let me take lots of photo's for my portfolio then it works for me just fine.

Most of the big stuff is paid for, its all things that I can buy in bits now, so I'm happy with that arrangement.

That skirt sound cool, get me a picture if you can!

Here's the link to the pattern Mai sent me. I like the skirt on the top left corner. I'm thinking of making it shorter, not quite floor length, like mid calf and of course, no lace or anything like that. And I like that off the shoulder shirt. I'll have to take a closer look at the pattern and see if it fits my needs.

Its extremely pretty.

I wasn't sure whether to go with a skirt or trousers, I kind of settled on trouserd with a sash around my hips, and a belt over it, I thought that would look kinda cool.

And of course a liberal splash of fullers earth and salt water, for that authentic look.

ofcourse,I didn't think of it like that. hmmmmm, will have to go look harder at red fabrics.

I got some sample peices of your fabrics, I found another suede, but I don't think its quite the right colour, got some of that dupion stuff I was telling you about, and one that I can't decribe colour wise, its actually woven with almost violet threads, but still comes out at your duck egg bluey kind of colour, a bit more towards the grey. But it was only £2.99 and went lovely with the sample trims I picked up, so I got a meter, reasoning that if you didn't like it I could find something else to do with it.

Sop, there you go, i'll get them put to together and try and put them in the post soon.

Ooh, bought the pirate costume above. I think it's definitely doable. With a few minor adjustments.

You know, now that I think about it, I don't think I EVER do a pattern the way it says to. I always change things up a bit. Redo the sleeves or the length of the skirt. Maybe I SHOULD have gone into costuming.....

I think I'm going to get started on the first one asap, get the pattern drawn out and the toile made up at least, hopefully post some pictures of progress (after the boring cotton stage, once I start working in the fabrics.

I started one of those blog things, when I have pictures I'll put them up there and post a link.

If you find fabric that you love, absolutely adore, if you want to, get it and post it to me, I'm not sure of the costs, but if you think its worth it then its always an option.

Well, finding quality fabric at Walmart just isn't gonna happen. Nice cottons and muslins and whatnot I can find, maybe a cute print for the skirt, but nothing quality for the corset.

We have another craft store that sells more fabrics. If I swing by there anytime soon (it's where I get my Jayne Hat yarns) I'll check the fabrics. I like to walk by all the upholstery fabrics nice and slow and mentally put the fabrics on chairs and curtains and whatnot.

Seryn. I have some questions for you. I'm concerned about the corset that I'm making for Kelly and Mai, that the straps will be too long, as they tend to be on me. I want to measure the girls and the pattern to make sure it'll fit right by I'm not sure how to goa bout that. So, there are two things I ask of you:

1)Which measurements I need to ask from the girls and then

2)How to translate that to the pattern.

Make sense?

you would normally ask for the arm-hole depth, which is, starting from the nape of your neck, the distance down to the seam of your sleeve.

Probably the best think to get them to do is to find a t-shirt like so-

that fits them and where the fabric underneath their arm sits at a comfortable level (not too high up into their arm pit or close around their shoulders, but not so low that if it were a tight top there would be 'bulging') then starting with the end of the tape measure on the little bump at the nape measure down the spine to the bottom of the arm hole (where the fabric starts on a top like the above)

I once knew someone who found the t-shirt that fitted her and adjusted the armhole to fit perfectly and took her measurements from the armhole, which might be help full, as it give an indication of where you want the 'strap' part to start and finish.

In that case, adjust the strap of the t-shirt to how they want it, then use the measurement of the t-shirt strap for the corset strap.

I am so crap at describing things! I will attempt to draw diagrams and then post them, that might help.

As for incorporating it into your pattern, it depends entirely on the shape of the straps. If the pattern has a shoulder seam, then its much easiers, if not, then using the t-shirt strap measurement as a guide is probably the best.

Will draw out a very shoddy diagram for you an post it on here this weekend.

Seryn-my favouritest person! Guess what came in the mail yesterday!?! And you were right, the one in the middle is my favourite. It's the perfect colour. I adore the raw silk look of it. And I love the braids. The leaf motif on the one is sooo pretty. I am very excited!

Oh, is the trim and all still going to be white? I was thinking that a cream or ivory or natural (whatever fabric I find I like best) blouse underneath would be just the thing. Not white with that lovely shade of blue. What do you think?

I suppose you can dribble, we just don't want to konw about it.

Yey, it got there!

well, as soon as I am able I will go out and get the requisit amount of material.

For the trims I was thinking either trying to match that dull gold, or going for an off white. Pure white is not a piraty colour, but yes, a lovely cream or ivory would look lovely, but avoid too 'yellow' a colour.

I'm so glad you got them safe and sound. Cool!

Did you like the way the braids were put together, or would you like the leaf ribbon on its own? Its a cae of if you want to spend that much, you'll need at least 5 meters to be safe (alternetly you could not have braid on the back) (its occured to me that you don't know what the back and sides look like, silly me!)

ok, more photos.

look, and love...

I may have to swoon from the loveliness.

Give me a moment.

*deep breaths*

Okay. I think I'm okay. As long as I don't try to stand.

The detail on that thing is frakking amazing. I am astounded by the grommet holes, the amount of work it must have taken to make each and every one of them!

You know if my corset looks half (no, quarter!) as good as that, I'm going to be over the moon!!!

Since I'm in for a penny in for a pound, I'm going to say that I love the braids together the best. I really do. And as to braiding on the back, I like the stuff on the sides, I think that's pretty, and follows the line of the corset, but I don't see the point of the T shape up the middle of the back. So let's say maybe braiding on the back sides, but it's not a priority. If there's no braiding on the back at all, I'm still a happy camper. But if braiding on just the sides looks weird, than can it all together.

And yes, nothing too yellow. That's true. I want a nice creamy colour. We'll see what I find.

Oooh, I can see it all in my head now, how lovely it's going to be. The problem is that I'm going to have to try to look piratey, and not "Hello, I'm Elizabeth Swan and I live in the Governor's Mansion." All I can think about are big poofy skirts and lace and petticoats and loveliness. That and "It's going to take an army to get me INTO that thing!"

We go on and on about my corset, have you started looking for stuff for yours?

no, I don't get the T shape on the back either, possibly its to hide another bone running accross the back to keep it straight, but that could be total crap, I really need to go to Manchester and look at the real thing.

I found some nice stuff on sale so I baught a meter. Its kind of electric blue shot through with black, so its actually quite dark, but very lovely, i was looking out for red but this stuff was so nice. If I don't use it for the corset it'll make a nice spencer style jacket.

But I was aiming for dark, with black trimmings, and black shirt, dark trousers, and I now have brown boots (extremely pretty, but I need to have my calves lipo'd or get them altered before I can wear them )

so, I've though, just not planned yet.

I have the same problem with most boots, they don't fit my legs. I have german legs, larger muscles than most. And most pull on boots just don't fit. The lace up ones I have a great because, well, they're adjustable.

Well, it sounds like you're doing great for your costume! Good.

If none of us are red, then none of us are red. The men can wear red. Who cares?

actually, some men look rather good in red.

some men.

Red is a 'difficult colour' unlike black, which is simply a 'scrummifying colour'.

"scrummifying"?

I'm not a big fan of black, myself. I hardly ever wear it.

Though, *looking down at myself* I'm wearing a black skirt today, with a black tank top and a teal striped blouse.

But it's the only black skirt I have.

My brother can wear red. We can make him wear red.

Also, I bet JadeHand would look good in red, he's got that dark hair.

Oh, but you have to admit that on the majority of men, a simple black shirt is extremely, words...nice? flattering? sexy?

no, scrummy-fying it is.

(Close your eyes and think 'Wesley from the Princess Bride' His 'ooh factor' increased signifacantly after he dumped the homespun grey.

Plus, there was this one time, one of the actors walked into the work room with four shirts, asking which he should wear on his date, and fourteen girls replied all at once almost 'the black one' - most with out bothering to actually look.

Its not a good thing twentyfourseven, but for impact it can't be beaten. Take for example, Mr Tightpants,

Ok, I am not drooling honestly.

In technical terms the eye is drawn to the brightest object, by virtue of the contrast between the dark non reflective colour and the skin, the brightest thing is the face. Also, as there is nothing to distract - you can't even see the folds on most black stuff - it makes the eye focus on and notice small details that would other wise be missed - eye colours, tonal changes in skin, lines and angles and strength of features, and as it usually this kind of stuff that defines male 'attractiveness' it suits men particularly. Then the actual shirt thing, with top button undone, the v neckline draws the eye down and towards, well...

Basically its just like drawing a big arrow on your chest pointing to your nethers. And any flirting coach can tell you the affect that has on others.

sorry, scrummyfying was kind of made up on the spot, (for a definition though, see picture above)

crazily enough 'ooh factor' was a mutually agreed upon term.

basically 'how good does this outfit make the actor/ress look' 'whats its oooooh factor'

silly silly things

I apologies for the long lecture, but hey, if ever your male friends are off on a hot date, you know how to help them out.

Of course if they look like a sasquatch, I would suggest the cartoon print jacket. Women love a sense of humor...

Aw, come back! you don't look like a sasquatch!

I've seen a photo of you, I think, and you are perfectly human looking, so no cartoon print jackets!

But from what I can remember, red would be a nice colour on you.

oh, and well done for loosing so much, gawd, I really need to get gym membership sorted out! yikes.

(the Helen philosophy is, theres only a finite amount of time given too us in which to eat chocolate eclairs. But I don't want to be that old lady on the bus with really fat ankles and a pressing need to share the details of her last colon op with the world, so to the gym I must go)

ROFLMAO!! I'll take that under consideration.

And I've told you before that you look great in nice, warm colours. Colour is your friend!

I have a feeling I'll be making some piratey vests before the end of all this. There will be red!

Oh, and YAY you for doing so well on the weight loss!!!! *hugs* and es

Ah, see I think that's a fine philosophy too. And for the recond I could stand to lose that 20 another 4 times. That is only from dismissing sodas from my intake. I've still hit the sweets on occassion. I haven't completely gotten rid of sugar, I just stopped drinking it. (alcohol being an exception but I haven't had that since New Years)
And I'll try to do more colors in the wardrobe.

Hey, they say the best thing you can do for yourself is to lose 10% of your body weight. (Well, for those of us that need to lose that is.) 20lbs is a fantastic start. I'm worried I'm not gonna recognize you at the Renn Faire (I am very excited about this. 2 Renn Faires in one year for me! Squee!)

Anyway, back to corsety talk.

I just can't stop looking at those pictures. It's a gorgeous thing.

Oh, and Seryn, about the braids. I assumed when I saw them, and then the pictures, that you'd be using just the non-leaf stuff around the edges of the front of the corset and then the combined braid elsewhere. That's how it seems to be in the pictures. There's thinner braid around the edges. You know best, it just occured to me that you might have been thinking something different than I was thinking so I wanted to clarify what I thought. That's all. (Did that make any sense?)

*wishes she could make D*C*

I can do red, in fact I have a red corset, but it's not piratey.

Should I be red at Cubed?

And I third the vote for our Jade in red...or black...or well, leather for that matter. Maybe he needs a corset too.
