Well, I'm mostly back. I'll be communicating mostly from work the next few days as I'll be spending most of my home time reconstructing the beast that is my computer. I'm ready to wipe the hard drive and start from scratch. All salvageable bits have been cut out of the old hard drive (files that I don't want lost like pictures of Browncoats and my whole music collection that I spent days loading. Yes, it's 95% Marillion) It pains me to do it, but it should be more funtional when it's done. *crosses fingers*
Thanks for the huggles
I love my Browncoats

There was a time where my collection was dominated by NIN, but now I have lots of all kinds of stuff...it's kinda sick, actually...all ripped on to my computer. It's something like 22gb.

Formatting, eh? I used to be so anal about system integrity that I would format my computer every 2 weeks when I was younger...you get really used to looking at progress bars on installs, haha.

so the reformat thing, not working out so well. giving me a headache. And work just went from majorly annoying to "let me show those postal workers how it's done." Ready to quit but, not ready to be without a job. plus need to get computer back to fully functional.
For those who know more about reformatting, when I reinstall the basic OS and that's just about all that's there, the registry is fresh too right? no old registry info should be there, right?

Seryn, again too lazy to sign in.

my shiny new iBook fund got pushed to the back this year.

It was a case of saving up to get one, and before i'd even been at it a month something else much more fun came up (Atlants! whoot!). So thats next years project.

Old bertie here is coming up for four years old and i'm beginning to get paranoid that each hiccup is the beginning of the end.

While we have a boffin in our midst though, are macs good computers? I was aiming for one mainly 'cause they were the ones used in college and I heared ta rumor that there was some kind of CAD/pattern drafting software available.

Plus they is pretty and oh so shiny.

But what are they like generally? reliable? Idiot proof?

Well the boffins not replying so I will.

I've not really used Macs, mainly because IBMs have all the software I use and I'm used to them...

Mac's at least seem quite easy to use, I also know that they are more robust than IBMs under most circumstances plus people don't really write Viruses or Spyware for them.

Depends what you want, if you're not going to pass files between it and windows much, and you don't play too many games then it's probably a good bet.

I want to get a Mac at some point, mainly to test code and websites I'm working on, but I can't really justify the expense for a computer I'm not really going to use (says the man-geek with five+ computers)...

Oh and I just bought my ticket for D*C, finally got paypal sorted so that it would let me pay

Mac is the operating system that Bill Gates plagarized to make windows. They are easy to use and fun. Like every computer they are prone to inevitably betray you in the form of hard disk failure and obsolesence. They are good, but they require their own software and if something goes wrong you will need to find a Macintosh expert for repairs. How ever they tend to have a fierce following, not unlike some tv series/movies I might mention. They are considered by many to be a better system though some will argue that it's apples and oranges. If in doubt buy new. Used computers come with their own obsolesence accelerator card. Unless you are lucky enough to get a used system that someone has upgraded to current standards.

Ah, yes I found out that it's a common thing to get those pop-up things until you get your updates installed. so spent about 6-7 hours getting 38 updates last night, working on service pack 2 on dialup, hours of entertainment.
Now I just need to get a proper Anti-Virus program up and running.
Macs from what I hear are good for a lot of art type programs, but generally don't give you much ability to tinker. I took my system apart, added a dvd/cd mega burner and a big-@$$ harddrive. You can't do that with Macs. A Mac is like a tool you use until it breaks, A PC is an appliance that requires maintainence and upkeep, but can be upgraded to suit your needs. From my understanding that is, I've never used a mac so I could be off.

I tend to be anti-mac. As I've grown older I've become less of an extremist, so I don't hate them anymore. They have their uses. The switch to the x86 platform is good (although AMD makes the better chip (for the most part)...stupid intel). It makes the Mac more attractive. I admire some of the "philosophy" for lack of a better term surrounding Mac and it's users.

Oh trust me, I don't tinker. I just don't have the nerve, I tried to up grade the memory (or whatever it is that makes it faster to get things off the drive) I got the casing off and worked out where it was meant to go and couldn't make it fit. Turns out I had the wrong type, it was this particular letter and my machine needed another letter or number of whatever, so I asked how I found out what I needed. I understood about the first two words of the reply. So my answers was basically, 'well f*** that. can I get a refund?'

And I thought laptops had a finite amount of tinkerability (new word!) anyway?

'sides the one I want has an 80gig(orwhatever) drive anyway. I have most of my music collection on it and several programmes, and i'm barely using about a quarter of that. Memory and processor can cope, thats about as much as this thicko needs

Yep, Apple switch to the x86 CISC chips seems stupid since the IBM PowerPC 970 RISC chip (which is what the G5 is) is faster than comparable x86s. All in the instruction set ya see .

I hurt. Pain. Everywhere.

Ow.

Just started a new martial art (Shaolin Nam Yang Kung Fu) and I haven't done any training in a year, so the kind of hard constant training for an hour and a half that I've just done has knackered me, and it hurts. Alot.

Also speaking from experience I know it'll be even worse tomorrow .

So obviously I've committed myself to training twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays...

I've litterally got bruises all over me, and despite finding it painful to move and being tired I have more energy than I know what to do with...

Anyway, time for a hot bath...
