Hey all

I was just wondering if any of you guys here watch THE OFFICE on NBC?

I have to admit, I was really apprehensive about this show to begin with. COUPLING left a really sour taste in my mouth after the prologue (that's how bad it was), and so the idea of turning probably the biggest British comedy since MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS into an American series. And the first few ep's I found to be a bit lackluster. But the second season I think, shows a huge jump in quality. It's managed to retain what was great about the British version, but give it's own distinct spin so that it's its own show and not in the shadow of the original. I've downloaded pretty much all the eps of it and watch specific moments on a regular basis.

One thing I dig is that with this show, the cast has moved beyond the main five and spends time developing the other office workers as well to give them their own distinct identity and the humor that lies in them ("Hi, I'm Meredith and I'm an al- good at supplier relations.)

My fave character on the show is obviously Dwight. He's such a nerd, suck-up and jerk, but you can't help but like him. And his "relationship" with Angela is actually my favorite pairing. Of course it's great seeing the unrequited love of Jim and Pam, but there's something a little more satisfying in Dwight and Angela's silent dance. Pam and Jim are the obvious cute couple, but Dwight and Angela are normally the stock antagonist characters. These are not romantic people at all. So for them to exchange these quiet moments of connection between these two people whom relationships with the opposite sex are nearly impossible is pleasing, even though the idea of them having sex would send chills up your spine.

They may not look it, but they're the Simon and Kaylee, whereas Jim and Pam are Mal and Inara.

I loved the lastest episode, "Valentines Day". Seeing Phyllis getting this barrage of flowers and gifts is almost as funny as Michael's little presentation video complete with U2 music. I was laughing so hard when that came on.

So any Office fan's here?

I loved on the episode where Michael had to get new floor in his office and they raided accounting and she just gave Dwight that look and he was like "Oh crap I better not do anything bad." and he just drops the stapler on the ground.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of The Office, too. Definitely agree that the second season is better. I started watching the show because it came on after My Name is Earl (which I find hilarious), but now I'm watching Earl because it's on before The Office. Weird how things like that work out.

Dude, I'm totally into The Office. I thought at first there's no way the show could be even 50% as good as the brit version, but I have to say I love it with a passion and to me it's even better than the brits.

War! Ricky Gervais doing a guest spot
War! Pre-emptiung the Olympics to get the show back on ASAP!!

I've been wondering about that show. I've never seen the British version, nor ever heard of the show in general until it came to itunes, but I've been hearing good things about it from people on the internet. I'll download one episode to see if I like it.

Another funny show I never thought I would like is Fat Actress with Kristy Alley. Its SO funny!

If you want to start at the beginning, go ahead. But I would recommend actually starting with the second season first. The holiday themed episodes I find really great. "The Client" and "Performace Reviews" set up one of the overall plot lines of the season of Michael and his boss Jan. "Foot Injury" has Dwight at his best. And "Boys and Girls" has one of the best serious moment/comedy moment juxtapositions in the series.

Both versions are great. The US show is one of the best comedies on television. I saw it before the UK version, and was impressed by its originality (fully aware it was a copy) and wit.

I kept hearing about the UK original, and I eventually got it. There's no doubt that it is something special and unique in television history - a short run, half hour comedy shot and written unlike any other show, ever.

Definitely see the UK version - you'll be glad you did. Then enjoy the US version too - a little different, but still funny as hell.

Wanted to bump this thread again, because of tonight's ep.

The last ep, "Valentines Day' had what I thought was so far the comedic highpoint of the series, which was Michael's "The Faces of Scranton" video scored with U2 music. But tonight's ep topped that with Dwight's speech.

Just to set up for those who havn't seen it, Dwight had won this Salesman of the Year Award and had to give an acceptance speech at this convention. Problem is, Dwight has a fear of public speaking. So he get's these conflicting messages from different people. Michael tells him to be constant with the jokes (which is ironic considering that Michael completely bombs with he's covering for Dwight), but Jim "helps" Dwight by essentially taking a page from famous dictators and supplies him with a speech by Mussolini. And when Dwight finally get's up to the podium, he deliver's this, which is without a doubt his shining moment so far in the series.

* * * * * * * *INTENSE SPOILERS* * * * * * * * * * * * *

(heavy breathing into the mike)(clears throat)(bangs hands on the podium) “BLOOD ALONE MOVES THE WHEELS OF HISTORY!!!(pauses) Have you ever asked yourselves in an hour of meditation-which everyone finds during the day-(raises fist into air) How long we have been striving for greatness? (bangs fist again) Not only the years we’ve been at war – the war of work – but from the moment as a child, when we realize the world could be conquered. It has been a lifetime struggle (bang’s fists again) a never-ending fight, I say to you (bangs again) and you will understand that it is a privilege to fight. (scattered applause) (pumps fist into air) WE ARE WARRIORS!! (bigger applause) Salesmen of north-eastern Pennsylvania, I ask you (bang) once more rise and be worthy of this historical hour. (even bigger applause as Dwight gives a horrible sounding laugh) No revolution is worth anything unless it can defend itself. (synchronized banging on the last two words followed by more applause and fist rising) Some people will tell you salesman is a bad word. They’ll conjure up images of used car dealers, and door to door charlatans. This is our duty to change their perception. I say, salesman – and women – of the world…unite. We must never acquiesce, for it is together…TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL. WE MUST NEVER CEDE CONTROL OF THE MOTHERLAND, FOR IT IS TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL!!! (last part is said by the crowd, which bursts into thunderous applause as Dwight gets his certificate, all the while raising his fist and pounding it on the podium.)

Heellll Yes! I couldn't WAIT for 8:00 tonight! But alas, I had to. Steve Carell is great, but I especially like the nonrelationship between Jim and Pam.

Hum... Do you think that Jim will REALLY go on a vacation?

I liked that last line tonight,"I capitvated the guy who capitvated 1000 guys.... 1000 guys."

But I think the line that is quoted most in my household is,"it is good for me..." Said with a little upward flux at the end, almost like a question, but not quite. And you have to say "it is", not "it's".

The Office ROCKS! But not as hard as, well, you all know.

Wacky fun!

I've been watching My Name is Earl from day one and think its great but it wasn't until about a month ago that I started leaving the TV on and watching The Office too.
I have to admit that the Jim and Pam relationship is one of the main reasons I watch. As funny as the show is and as brilliant a comic as Steve Carrel(sp?) is I really find they're relationship(or lack therefore) very engaging.
Good stuff.

Not exactly sure. There'll probably be an announcement of it in the summer and be out in Sept. before season 3 starts. Which with the news that Ricky Gervaise and Stephen Merchant will guest write an ep for the third season.

I dunno about Jim. I know that a typical season finale would be that we'd be at Pam's wedding, and all the office people would be there, sans Jim. But Jim's only gone as far as Philly, as Ryan speculated. He'd then go back and interrupt the wedding. You know, something off of FRIENDS. But I think that would be way out of place on THE OFFICE, although seeing Michael rock the mike at the reception afterwards would be the right step.

They have much more imagination than me or the FRIEND's staff, so I'm guessing that it'll be a lot better than anything we could come up with. If they can turn Dwight into a pseudo-dictator as he's accepting an award, then I'm sure the season finale's going to be even better.

See above post to read my thoughts on Jim/Pam and Dwight/Angela.

I loved the english version and I tried to watch a few episodes of the smerican one when it came on here (UK) but I thought it was dreadful, really really bad

I'll give the second season a go though when it arrives, as I've heard that it becomes it's own programme rather than being a painful copy like in the few I saw...

My Name Is Earl and The Office, best hour and a half of comedy on TV.

You mentioned Coupling, I never watched the original before seeing the US version, so I actually thought it was ok. Now I've seen it and the original is so much better.

I had the same reaction, love the UK Office, but the first season of the American one didn't grab my attention. But I've seen a few episodes lately of the newest season and it's quite funny. Dwight is hilarious.

Just to bump this up again, here's something on THE OFFICE to speculate about.

Do you think Dwight would be a fan of FIREFLY/SERENITY?

I think there's evidence to both a yes and a no answer. Yes, on the fact that we know he's a fan of STAR WARS and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and sci/fi fantasy in general. So to me it wouldn't be a stretch to see him declare his love for our BDH's. He might see himself as a pasty, white, male version of Zoe to Michael Scott's Mal (two characters that should never be in the same building, let alone room).

But on the other hand, Dwight is an amateur despot. Someone who considers authority and power to be an aphrodisiac as well as deer jerky. And STAR WARS and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA are very militant in nature. FIREFLY/SERENITY on the other hand could be seen as anti-war and subversive. So maybe Dwight wouldn't find our BDH's appealling. If anything, he'd be hardcore Alliance.

Can you imagine Dwight in the Alliance? He'd be the perfect Assistant to the Galactic Regent (although he'd leave out the "to the" part). And during review time to see him in an Alliance uniform off in an empty interrogation room blaring bad rock music, pumping himself up so that during performace review time he can ask for a raise.

"The least you could do is keep my salary consistent with inflation. HA-KAAAA-AAAAHHHHH!!"

Or maybe instead, see him sulk off to his hovercraft and blare out "Everybody Hurts" during some alone time.

I dunno. Dwight and the Alliance would seem like a match made in heaven.

Alternately, who off of FIREFLY/SERENITY would you like to see guest star or maybe join the cast of THE OFFICE? I think Nate Fillion might make a good guest as maybe Jim's older brother or a sales associate or something to contrast Michael with.

Hey

Just wanted to update the thread again since there was a new ep on tonight. This ep was called "Take Your Daughter to Work Day". I think ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT did this idea better, but there were plenty of good moments in this ep.

My favorite one was when Kelly got jealous of Stanley's 8th grade girl talking to Ryan and Stanley bringing the thunder down on an unsuspecting Ryan.

Stanley: [Screaming at Ryan] That little girl is a child! I don't wanna see you sniffing around her anymore this afternoon! Do you understand?

Ryan: Yes sir.

Stanley: Boy have you lost your mind because I'll help you find it! Whatchu looking for? Ain't nobody gonna help you out there. Jesus could come through that door and he's not gonna help you, if you don't stop sniffing after my child!

[cut to Ryan]

Ryan: Stanley yelled at me today. That was one of the most frighting experiences of my life.

Can't argue with that.
