I started up mine knowing full well that there would be months and months in between posts, and that there would be very little in it to interest anyone but me, (hence the obscure song lyric for a title) but I don't mind too much.

Actually though, I have to go and write up the pigeon happy-slapping incident.

surely they can't be that bad?

Ah well, glad you liked the picture Mattie, all of them appeard in an issue of SFX, including Adam doing that big twinkly beaming grin that he does so well, and a group shot with Natchan almost hugging Summers leg (take all sorts I suppose) there was a site around somewhere, someone linked to in one of the general discussion threads, that had all of them, the girls aswell, as they were taken for the movie promotion, they're all very good practically poster worthy photo's. Who ever took them needs a payrise. (and only about 40% of this opinion comes from the fact that the subjects are hot, the majority is actually on the tecnical merit, they are very well taken photo's)

Also, some enterprising lass has started making them into fridge magnets and selling them on ebay. So if you fancy keeping you BDH's on your fridge (diet aids anyone? ) there you go.

I updated my blog, it now has recent waffle about how my cat fancies SR, or possibly thinks SR is a spy/dog-lover, and the recent happy slapping incident. And a lot of other guff about the playground teasing i'm having to endure at work.

Hmmm, why did they send me away to Wakefield for a week without t'internet to go to a course to learn stuff I already know and don't need to know to do my job.

Why did they put me in officially the most boring and depressing Hotel that has ever existed?

Why is it so bloody cold here, why is it snowing, why do I have a four-five hour drive and the M25 to look forward to?

Who did this too me? Who would think this is a good idea? Who?

Only a yogurt.

One of them kind of hmmms.

oh, poor Sean! *hugs*

At least the depressingly boring hotel will make the M25 that little bit more bearable.

Its snowing because it is March, after a positively balmy January, the gods of the weather have decided that winter this year will take place in spring (which means that summer will have to be pushed back till autumn, posibly early winter, but that we'll get nice shiny weather for S3). But at least hopefully we'll get some damn entertaining storms in April.

And courses only ever tell you what you already know, if you didn't already know it, how are you doing your job? But at the end I think you get a shiny certificate to prove that you know it, and thats the reason. Employers can't be expected work out for themselves that you are knowledgable and competant, they need a piece of paper to tell them.

It puts you, my dear, in need of huge blocks to chock off the front tires, or a true friend you can trust with your life to sit inside the car and hold down the brake pedal while running the car in drive. Don't scrimp on the huge part and don't trust your parking brake they are prone to betrayal.
The oscillating engine speed sounds deffinately like something that only happens idling in gear. That's the reason I asked about a whistling noise. A vacuum leak, unmeasured air getting into the intake, can play merry hell with a engine at idle. Often it has the buy product of causing a whistle as air is sucked into a disconnected vacuum port and into the intake. The should be a sticker under your hood with a diagram of all the vacuum lines. You might just see if they are all connected properly and intact.

Have you cleaned your battery connections lately? Computerized cars are a might particular about their batteries. You might try to take off the battery terminals and clean them. Just make darn sure you don't, repeat don't disconnect the battery with the engine running that will fry the computer.
A dirty fuel injector might be corrected by running some fuel treatment through the tank, but I don't think that's it.

Well, I can definitely check my vacuum lines and clean the battery terminals. I'll do it this weekend.

And my sister's coming to visit Sunday. I can trust her enough to let her sit with my car in drive and let me listen to the engine. She hasn't tried to kill me in several years, so we're good.

It hasn't done the..what'd you call it? "oscillating engine speed" thing since. I'm hoping that's a good sign and not that my car is saving up for something big to go wrong.

And I will get some of the fuel injection cleaning stuff next time I'm anywhere near a place that sells that kind of stuff.

Thanks for the help!

No problem, anything for a friend, well almost anything. I'm not going to change your main bearings through the US mail. I like this kind of working on cars, my hands are still clean and I get to think.
How much book studying have you done in regards to cars? The fact that you are willing to do the basic stuff and are unafraid of the grunge factor is really encouraging. Don't worry I'm not trying to change your career for you. I just appreciate a woman who can tinker.

nearly none. I'm very hands on. I learn by leaning over other people's shoulders and pestering them with questions.

Well, I did learn to change the oil on my car by simply jacking the car up, searching underneath until I found what I hoped was the place where the oil came out and unscrewing it (getting oil all over myself-joy!) and then finding the thing that looked the new oil filter I had in my hand, unscrewing that and replacing it with the new one and then putting more oil in the car. And then after I'd done all that and cleaned up my mess (and myself) I turned my car on and thanked God when it didn't blow up.

But mostly, I just bug people that know things about cars and make them tell me what they're doing.

But I do that with lots of things, not just cars. I'm a big gleaner.

I do that as well, I bug people for information, and attempt to 'glean'. My problem with driving is that my Dad is the only driver, so I once asked him about what the gears etc, did. At the start of a journeyFor the next two hours he told me what he was doing every single time he did something, and good on him, thanks for that. but TOO MUCH INFORMATION!
I still only have the vaguest idea of how they actually work, but i'm too afraid to ask again.
I figure when I manage to get driving lessons, then i'l start looking into it in ernest. I don't fancy ever being in control of something I don't have the slightest clue of how to fix, and i've no problem with the mucking in and finding things out, but until I have a car to play with, not much of anything is going to stick.

CMS: Continuing our thing from the 15th floor. DVOM stands for digital volt ohm meter. It is a rather inexspensive instrument that you can use to trouble shoot electrical and electronic problems, and not just in your car. If you ever need to run tests on your computer and peripherals, your electric guitar or your amp a DVOM is a handy thing to have. Some people call it a multimeter. A logic probe is a similar device that indicates if a wire is has power or is a ground. It is a more evolved version of a test light that simply shows if a wire has power. The advantage of a logic probe is less likely to damage sensitive computers, sensors and actuators. Personally I only have a testlight and a DVOM in my breakdown kit. My logic probe stays at work. I guess if you have to choose what to buy first I would say first a DVOM and then testlight . A logic probe is overkill for your level of involvement. The reason I asked about book learning is because working automotive electrical and it's big brother electronics involves some book study. The test light is a really simple tool and it only does a few things, but it does them well. The DVOM is really open ended. It's a tool that really is a extention of your mind and your knowlege. The more you know the more ways you can use it. The typical reason to have a DVOM is to check the battery, the alternator and their respective terminals. It will tell you in less than five minutes if your battery is fully charged, if the connections are good and if the alternator is functioning properly, but that's only just scratching the surface of a DVOM's potential.

Sorry I guess I got a little long winded on that one.

You are quite right. There are multimeters with dwell meters, (for reading cam angle and duty function,) tachometers (for reading engine speed), and some even have connections to hook up temperature probes. There are some meters that also have small oscilliscopes built into them, (very exspensive). The term multimeter can be at times vague.

It's best to focus on the basic three functions of measuring voltage, current, and resistance. Everything else is mostly extras for service proffessionals. There are even older analog volt ohm meters, but they are a damage risk when testing circuits involving computer control. You can buy a cheap meter for less than twenty dollars at the local Radioshack, but I would recommend that you invest in something a bit sturdier. A well made meter with proper care will last a lifetime. Junk is, well,...junk.
