Why doesn't Tom Cruise have a sense of humor?

REGINAROADIE

I was reading another article about the whole SOUTH PARK/Scientology controversy going on about Tom's influence on getting the ep lampooning him from being aired in the U.K. and being rerun and Issac Hayes quitting the show that made him a household name because of them satirizing Scientology and one side accusing the other of bigotry and all that.

And I'm wondering, getting back to the thread heading, why Tom Cruise doesn't seem to get the humor of the situation. I mean, he has to be aware of the bizzare turn in behavior on his end. He's had gay jokes lobbed against him his entire career. Why is it that he's taking it all so personally now? If I were a celebrity and I was being made fun of on SOUTH PARK or anywhere else, I would actually be honored by that distinction.

I can understand the Scientology angle. I get that people can be very touchy on their personal religious beliefs on any religion. But I think that people can and should have a sense of humor about their theology and all that. It's healthy to be able to look at yourself from a distance and laugh at a few things about yourself.

But I think that any sane person would realize that immense success should come with a sense of humor and humility. Look at George Clooney or Kevin Smith. They're the first people to make fun of themselves before others. They seem to have a grasp on the humor of their public persona. But Tom seems to have lost the ability to laugh at himself.

I dunno. I just think that he should just lighten the fuck up. Him and Sean Penn. Why is it that the guy who played Spicoli has no sense of humor whatsoever.

I just found this post over at jumptheshark.com that really hit's the issue on the head.

Let me get this straight. Christians, Jews, Mormons, etc. can be made fun of, but not Scientologists? Gimme a break. Religion has been the butt of jokes long before South Park and will continue to be long after they're gone. Issac Hayes comes across as a hypocrite. He's bothered by the Scientology episode? HELLO!! What did he think he was getting himself into when he agreed to be Chef? Didn't the Jesus vs. Santa episode give him a clue? Apparently not. If it hasn't been for SP, he would've still been in obscurity. I'm not against Scientologists. If that's your religion and it works for you, then that's good. But come on. It's just a tv show that makes fun of everyone. Every race, color, sex, religion, you name it. I'm Christian and love the show. I have Jewish relatives on my mother's side and they too love the show. If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? Too bad that Barry White has passed on; he would've been a perfect replacement. I guess that means no more chocolate salty balls.

somewhere over the past 10 years, someone has shoved their hands up toms ass and removed his humour chip, he never used to be like that.

All religions are humourous in some way, and you either put up or shut up in my opinion.

There's a little clip you should be able to find, over the internet, of someone interviewing Tom Cruise, and then he sprays him with a water pistol or something. Tom Cruise goes psycho and starts telling the man off and calling him a jerk and nearly threatening him. It's really funny, but the point is that the man seems to be insane.

I don't know how it's possible to be an actor like that without any sense of humor, but I guess it is.

What is there to say? South Park is great and Tom Cruise is full of shit. Who’s going to disagree with that?

I supposed I could speculate on why Tom Cruise is full of shit. Maybe after convincing Holmes to come to the light side and be washed of all her sins he’s associated his relationship with her to the credibility of his religious beliefs. Therefore, in his twisted view of things he thinks that if scientology gets discredited he’ll be shamed before his new love interest. I suspect that could be it, or maybe the paint chips he ate as a child are finally taking hold. I really don’t know. I’m just guessing.

But after hearing what Hayes had to say, I think I’m going to start lampooning scientology. Even though I don’t actually believe in ridiculing other people’s religions, this is a matter of principle. Christians and Jews are ridiculed (and at times even persecuted, like for real) and Hayes clearly had no problems with South Park taking their shots, so who the hell made scientologists so damn righteous, Mr. Hayes?

What it comes down to is: L. Ron Hubbard (scifi author extraordinaire) stated AT LEAST three times that the way to make 'real' money was to start a religion.

He did it. I think he did is a part joke and part money printing machine.

Scientologists have no sense of humor because the leaders of their church have no sense of humor. Why? Because the leaders of their church KNOW that the damn thing was started as a money generating joke by a science fiction author who was winking openly at the tax man.

In the United States, Scientology is a 'religion'. Keeping them out of the reach of the tax man. In countries where there is are official religions, Scientology promotes themselves as a 'philosophical' organization.

They're full of shit up to their eyeballs and rely on folks as stupid as Tom Cruise to fork over tons of money. When you're a money generating joke created by a SciFi writer, you cannot afford to have a sense of humor.

I think there are lots of things that rely on desperate earnestness on the part of their members: Scientology, fundamentalist Christianity, vegetarianism, etc, etc.

If they allowed other people to laugh at the nature of their beliefs then they have to examine why others found them so ridiculous.

I think most branches of Judaism have the right idea, frequently making light of both themselves and the misfortune of Jews over the centuries.

that wasnt that long ago either

I remember sitting in pinewood bar and restaurant, with tom, and nicole was there (this was after my embaressing ignore tom cruise incident) and pretty much the whole movie cast and crew were there, and there was lots of laughing and joking going on, people were ripping into tom over his hair and outfit and he was laughing and jokeing back, and he took it all good naturedly.

If loseing that sense of dignity and humour is what his religion does to you, then its a shame, cause he used to be a really nice bloke.

My personal feelings are this: anyone who buys into Scientology deserves whatever insults are lobbed their way. It's not a religion; it's a business, designed solely to bleed the "believers" of their money.

I'm agnostic, but at least I can see the reasoning and appeal behind Christianity. Scientology just looks like a bad joke that anyone beyond a 2nd grade cognitive level should be able to dismiss for what it is... gos se.

It appears the reports may have been wrong. Hayes didn’t leave South Park because he’s a fanatic scientologist. He just had a stroke. It seems that Haye’s comments might have been taken out of context. Also it appears the episode was not actually pulled.

It appears, if one believes what this author is saying, that this whole thing was concocted, perhaps by space aliens, I don’t know.

But I can go back to being neutral towards Scientology, as I am towards all religions (of course I was just being facetious about that anyway, but maybe I’ll start lampooning Buddhism)

I think it's safe to say that all religions augment profit off their surrogates. Whatever enigmatic deity conjured us, if that's the case, I doubt he'd care about our money. I mean...He created man, why would he have any need for something man created? Religion as a whole is flawed. Sorry, not spurning everyone's beliefs, or having a go at them. I'm agnostic too, I just think it wrong to exploit people's faith.

PS: Ever since Tom divorced Nicole, he's proven his idiocy time and time again. She's Aussie(like myself, so I'm bias), beautiful, intelligent, charming & witty, altruistic. All-in-all, one very special lady that he was too stupid to hang on to.

I think the guy is getting a bit of unfair crticism though. I mean, expressed some opinions on his beliefs. So what? He jumped around on Oprahs couch, I mean I act a lot more crazy than that sometimes.

Still, trying to stop that South Park episode seems really retarded.

You know what was really funny about that ep? Normally on SOUTH PARK, they go out of their way to make any celebrity as ridiculous as possible. But I think their characterization of Nicole Kidman in that episode is probably the first time in their almost ten year history that they didn't make a celebrity look like an idiot. The Nicole Kidman in that episode was one of the few rational voices in the whole ep. She wasn't buying into Tom's shit at all.

I dunno. Maybe Trey and Matt have a soft spot for Nicole.

A few years ago, Tom fired the publicist he's had for most of his career. She controlled his craziness and hid all of his wacky shit from the public. When she was dumped, Tom got his scientologist sister to do the job instead. That's why he "just" started being crazy--apparently, he was always fairly whacked but back then he had good representation.

Yes, they did do a voice sampling thing for Chef (and weren't particularly trying to hide that they were cutting together old dialogue)... it was hi-larious. The whole ep was basically an in-joke about Isaac Hayes leaving, and why, and so the boys behind South Park just had a field day.

I don't want to give away any spoilers because the episode is just mercilessly funny.

I think it all goes back to their(Tom & Sean) original "Tapes" contract which reads in the fine print. " after said number of successful movies I here-by agree to loose any kind of humor I see in life.

Tom did break this agreement in the"War of the Worlds" movie where the lines were spoken , other actor" You know what your problem is." where Tom replies " I can think of a couple women that can tell ya.(chuckel)"

When i was a kid i read this book about scientology and it had a little card thingy to send for more information and i sent it in for the hell of it figuring i'd get a booklet in the mail or something but they instead constantly sent me stuff inviting me to various gatherings and stuff and called my house at all hours and didn't stop after i told them many times to leave me alone and then people started following me. It was very very creepy and i really thought they were going to hurt me a few times.

Anyways once i grew up and stuff they went away. Once in a while i still wil get some mail from them. I really don't like them

Tom does not have a sense of humor because:

1- He is small
2- He is having a midlife crisis- dating younger women...Tom...please.
3- His cult demanded payment and release of his humor to the LRH/Jimmy Jones Koolaid Foundation.
4- Shitty Actor
5- Leftist Puke
6- Retarded
7- He has an assistant who know handles all intellectual "humor" property for Mr. Cruise
8- He HAD a sense of Humor?
