Hi guys,

Hope you can help me out with a quick question.

A friend of mine who is writing a Firefly fanfic has just asked me

"Firefly start 4 years after Serenity Valley or later? Does anything in film or series mention how long it has been exactly sice the war ended? Does it mention when it started?"

And I realised that I wasn't as true a fan as I had thought as I have no idea!

Can anyone help me out so that I can sound all knowledgeable to her?!

I'm fairly certain it says "six years later" when they fade from Serenity Valley into Mal's little "salvage" mission in the pilot episode. Six years.

It doesn't mention when it started, but the flashback of little Simon and River in "Safe" says 11 years ago and River references "Independent squads" in her dinosaur battle, so it's probably that the war was already going on, maybe just started, which would be at least five years prior to Serenity Valley.
(Incidentally, that's probably also around the time Mal joined, up, since he'd be about 19 then! *g*)

But the war probably lasted longer than just five years, considering the scope of interplanetary landscape...

War was five years according to the OVC history. There seems to have been one year of confusion, where the Browncoats were held in a camp for some time pending trial, and then Mal bought Serenity. He and Zoe then took on Bester, fired him and took on Kaylee and Wash. The four seem to have travelled for maybe three years before they picked up Jayne on Caliban. Some four, five months later, Mal rented the shuttle to Inara, and eight months after that, took on passengers at Persephone. The book of the film says 'eight years' after at the beginning, and the Tams have been on board eight months.

Of course, I could be wrong, but this is how the timeline works out from my sources.
