Just a thought- maybe we should put the fit club on hold for the next month or so. Once September rolls around we can start it back up. That way, the weather will be starting to get cooler and most people will have already gone on their vacations. If you don't want to lose momentum with the club I'll keep it going. I'm flexible either way. Let me know your thoughts.

Alright, I'm declaring the fit club is on hiatus. It'll be back in September. If there are any objections to this let me know before the weekend is over. I promise it's not gone, just away for a few weeks. Meanwhile, keep up the good work.

Crap, just got the chance to reply (been dealing my my "boss/project manager" this week).

Did one set.

My personal opinion is that it should just keep going for those that want it. After all, it takes just a minute to post a new thread.

That being said, I'll PM the previous regulars to try to get there input as well (perhaps this thread just isn't staying in the top 100 and they don't have it bookmarked).

I'm bumping it as much as I can. I don't mind posting this thread but if it's just you and me it seems kind of silly. I'm only talking about a month long hiatus and that doesn't mean you have to stop working out. It could be kind of fun to see how much people improve in one month without regular check-ins. Whatever. I'll post it if you want.

Not sure that putting the thread on "hiatus" is the right thing to do. With summer here a lot of people don't have as much time to post as usual, I know that I don't. I'm sure no one has noticed, but I haven't posted a great deal in the past two weeks or so. I have just been busy with work and home.

I know a good number of browncoats have vacations, and all, but I think shutting down the thread, even temporarily, will be counter productive to what we have been accomplishing here.

I am in better shape now then I have been in years. Now that I have got training new hires behind me, I am going to be on the boards more and have more time to hit the gym.

I for one will be posting.

Thanks for mailing me sigmanunki! Where have I been? hmmm...

I've not kept up with the running - busy with fanfic and gardening obsessions. Also, I've had a dance workshop the past few weeks which is definitely exercise (class and rehearsal every night and teacher is dead set on making us work our arabesques - which I am too out of shape for! My poor back!)

Anyway, hiatus good. I really enjoyed running for the few weeks I did it, and I'll join up for a fresh start in September! A new week one could be energizing...

Got some gym time in finally this past weekend. Did 30 minutes on weights and 30 minutes of cardio on Friday. Sunday I did an hour of hard cardio.

I am still walking 2.5 - 3 miles every workday at lunch. Of course with the heat lately I am doing it in the underground parking garage where the temperature is tolerable.

Has anybody here heard of Crossfit? A coach in California named Greg Glassman noticed that gymnasts seemed to pick up other sports a lot easier than other athletes (their base was more solid), olympic weightlifters were pound for pound the strongest people in the gym, and short and medium distance athletes (running, sprinting, swimming, rowing, etc.) are very strong and have pretty good endurance too.

He combined all three of these disciplines into one system he calls Crossfit, which is supposed to create a completely unspecialized athlete able to do nearly anything. This is in direct opposition to a lot of conventional wisdom, which says we need to be endurance athletes and do bodybuilding-type weightlifting programs, which make us into semi-bodybuilders, but develop no true functional strength, which to me makes no sense. I'd rather be a normal looking guy with a lot of functional strength rather than Arnold with no functional strength (not to say that bodybuilders aren't strong, they're just strong in ways that don't occur in real life). If I ever do post a fanfic, I'm going to modify Jayne's workouts to include some of the stuff they do in their workouts, since it seems like most of that would be right up Jayne's alley. U.S. Navy SEALs, Jayne's kind of folks, do these workouts (but scaled UP).

Check out the website ( www.crossfit.com )--the whole thing is free, including the workout of the day (WOD). The beautiful part about the program is that a) none of the workouts should take over an hour, b) all the workouts can (and should) be scaled to ability (look at Brand X Martial Arts for a blog where they give scaled versions of the workouts), and c) you are going to be functionally strong in ways you can't believe.

Downsides to the program are several, I must admit. First, I will say that Crossfit got some pretty bad press a year or so ago. A U.S. Army Ranger decided to be an idiot and do an unscaled workout at full tilt his first time out, and unsurprisingly he gave himself rhabdomyolysis and was in the hospital for almost a week. Also, since the founder is of a fairly libertarian persuasion, there's a lot of flak raised by that, but just ignore that stuff and focus on the training since that's what matters (if a coworker comes up with a great idea, you don't dismiss it because he's the opposite political affiliation).

Finally, the technical skill in executing a lot of the stuff is pretty involved. Olympic lifting alone is very difficult if you've never done a clean and jerk or a snatch, and gymnastics is also very intense, though they only do some basic gymnastics, which many people can actually pick up faster than you'd think.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox here. I had never thought about mentioning this to the Firefly community--hope someone gets a little something out of this ridiculously long post.

I've been working out for 1 1/2 months now. I spent the fall, winter and spring depressed and crazy, so I ended up sitting around a lot, drink large amounts of alcohol, and eating whatever struck my fancy. I pretty much health-wise threw all caution to the wind.

Strangely enough I didn’t put on weight, I just became really weak and unhealthy looking. My muscles shrank into nothingness, and I was tired all the time so 1 1/2 months ago I forced myself to start exercising. I spent the 1st weak drinking a lot of water and changing my diet. I stopped eating anything fried or processed. Stopped eating sugar, and stopped drinking alcohol.

The 2nd week I started small exercises. Just learning to push my own body around. Sit-ups, pushups, chin-ups, and a whole lot of stretching. The 3rd week I continued to do those things but added 1st indoor running in place, and exercise machines to hit every muscle in my body, and then by the 4th week I was outdoor running, climbing, biking, swimming etc. I must run at least 10 miles a day now. I drink around 4 quarts of water a day.

I'm back to my 100lbs, lean self and I like it, and I look great in everything I put on.

Forcing ones self to be healthy is an incredible chore sometimes. It's easy to simply not want to do it. The hardest part about being healthy is the starting of it. I guess we have to be motivated by something. For some the motivation is to be healthy, for others its too look good. My motivation was to feel strong and look good.

P.S. Why do all the great tasting foods have to be so bad for you?
