My GOD we're an old-sounding bunch!!!! Makes me feel like crawling into a hole a pulling the dirt over my head just READING this thread!!

Someone should start a new topic- What makes you feel YOUNG? For me it's....

Still being able to get stuck on a TV show!

Getting enthused about meeting a bunch of really cool (yeah I know, that expression dates me!) people on-line.

Ruxton, you did not deserve the appalling abuse you have received on this thread.

On the posting page, Haken has written "please be civil when responding to others". Can River6213's comments be regarded as "civil"?

Aren't we all supposed to be Browncoats together? Talking about different types of fashions that were cool at different times?

By the way, platform shoes were the height of fashion for men in previous centuries in Europe, and I don't think guys with earrings look stupid---after all, even SHAKESPEARE wore one!

In previous centuries, men wore lace and silks and brocaded frockcoats, buckled shoes and stockings, wigs, earrings & perfume, and no one questioned their masculinity, or they would run you through with a sword! It was only the Victorians who decided that men should all dress in black suits and never be allowed to wear fun clothes, and it was only the hippies of the 60's and 70's who rebelled against the Victorian ideas. Their rebellion was crushed, and men were forced back into their only permitted colours (beige, black, dark blue, dark green, and grey) acting as a dull background to us women in all our colourful glory. "Does that seem right to you?"

So lighten up, River6213, lighten up! We're all Browncoats together, remember?

Nellie,
Thank you. I much appreciate that you can discern exactly what was said by whom, and in what order. I'm a professional editor, so things like that seem obvious to me, and thus not worth my time to respond. But when kind folks like you take up my banner, it is just simply splendid. Shiny, even.

And SIGNYM, your wonderful comment got a big laugh outa me: "Makes me feel like crawling into a hole a pulling the dirt over my head just READING this thread!!"

Thing is, when I stop laughing, the aches all come back.

Better keep laughin', I guess. Waugh!

BTW, Saw a comment tonight on Mr. Universe's Friday show about men wearing 4" heels on shoes with buckles, in times past.

What makes me feel old -- aside from the fact that I remember everything which everyone else here says they can remember?

BTW, how far back one's memory goes varies from person to person. I can remember things back to when I was 13 months old (they've been confirmed by people who were there). Granted, I don't have typical day-to-day memories prior to 3 (and many of my earliest memories are no longer as crisp as they used to be).

Many of the people I know have trouble remembering things earlier than 5, and to me, that seems ridiculous, particularly as my memory goes back so much further. (I distinctly remember the birth of my sister when I was 2, and even recall exactly what I said, who was there, and where everyone was standing when they brought her in through the door of our house.)

All of my grandparents (now long deceased) and my Dad (also deceased) could remember things as a small children, but my Mom claims to remember virtually nothing from her childhood (including much of school). Weird.

Regarding the person who said 13 channels -- my earliest memory of TV was of only having 3 channels (and all of them on UHF) -- just the local affiliates for CBS, ABC & NBC.

I remember seeing a poster for "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" at the local cinema and thinking that Bond didn't look the same.

I watched either the first or second episode of "Star Trek" with my Dad, (I think it was "The Corbomite Manuever")and thought it was stupid (never got into it until a decade later, with the reruns).

By the time "Star Wars" was out, I was already driving.

I actually feel much older than I am, but still don't look my age.

Listening to the radio the other day, the DJ decided to play Groove is in the Heart by Dee-Lite. It's a catchy tune, some people despise it, but I can't help but tap my toe when it's on, remembering how we all loved it in high school. Song ends and the DJ says "16 years old and that song is still a lot of fun." I literally just sat there in wonderment thinking 'was it really that long ago?'

SCORPIONREGENT

Looking at a toolbox full of SAE tools know they are completely obsolete for automotive work and remembering how many years I used them.

Having the baggirl at the supermarket ask me, "Do you need help getting that to your car sir?"

Reffering to a individual as a "kid" and knowing full well they are legal to drink.

Understanding the true meaning of the proverb, "If youth only knew, if age only could."

Knowing that I not going to be able to make the shift from Rock & Roll to Hip Hop and that I will now be listening to what a lot of people will think of as "Oldies" music.

Making the remark with a time refference to the Johnson administration and getting a blank stare from a coworker and knowing that he/she may not even remember the Reagan administration.

Knowing that I was alive when JFK was killed.

Having friends my age who are grandparents.

Asking myself why the USA still hasn't gotten the Metric system yet.

The other day, I was bored, sitting around nothing much to do (sad life indeed). I usually pull out one of the ole Firefly DVDs or Serenity and pop it in. However, since my daughter and wife are not nearly as obsessive about the 'verse as I, I decided to take pity on them.

I pulled out an "old" VHS tape and popped it in. It was the last VHS that my wife and I purchased and I frankly forgot we owned it. I pressed the [PLAY] button and settled in to watch my re-found movie. As the soft sounds of the flute played through my speakers, I suddenly had an attack of age perception.

I grabbed the VHS box and stared at the date printed on it. For some reason it only seemed like yesturday, but I was just floored by the fact that "Titanic" was released almost 9 years ago.

Time flies when you're having fun I guess

I'm sorry. I tried to keep it under 5g.

But seriously, I was just amazed that out of nowhere, something could make me lock my mind into a specific time and realize just how much of it has slipped through my fingers. (Metaphorically of course)

While I'm not a member of the "Over the Hill Gang" (only 34 here), I always get floored when I notice the jumps in my chronological memory.

While my daughter will always be my little baby, every now-and-then I look at her and marvel at how much she's changed over the years and wonder where I was when it happened.

Such is life I suppose!

You're absolutely right.

Along those lines, about 10 years ago I used to drive a van for senior citizens (most of them near 90, and most of them female). They used to get a kick out of it when they'd complain about an ache or something, and I'd tell them, "If you think it's bad now, wait until your MY age." Granted, I could've been the grandson of any of them, but they would laugh and enjoy it just the same.

And I was never so embarrassed as one hot summer day I was driving an elderly woman who was wearing a heavy winter coat. I was in short sleeves and shorts, and dying from the heat, and I looked at her and said, "Mrs. So and So, you're making me hot just looking at you in that coat."

Well, she took that she was making me "hot" not in the way I'd intended it, and everyone around had a good laugh.

Exactly - Just keep in mind that they're only old on the outside. On the inside, they're still 21 and fearless.

Oh, no wait - that's my Dad. Mom's more like 29 forever. They're both in their 70s, though, looking around at all their friends and wondering a little bit about who all those old people are.

My Mom will be 70 this November, and I wish she acted 29. She's more like 14 -- which is frightening.

For the sake of space, I'll skip the story about how she got hurt on a trampoline 2 years ago.

Even I (the fool) knew better than to get on that thing, and I'm in my 40's.

See, that's what happens. They get to a certain age and end up in complete denial of their geratric circumstance. Your mom and my dad should talk.

Difference between us and them is that we've figured out we're not immortal after all. They used to think that too, only now with their lapse in memory, they forgot.

Do you remember when Mannix wasn't a private investigator? He originally was employed by some kind of spy/detective agency called "Intertect" and his boss was played by Frank Campanella (who, in turn, ended up portraying the ex-husband of Bonnie Franklin's character on "One Day at a Time" (featuring Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie [Van Halen] Bertinelli)).

______________
'When a candidate ... faces the voters, he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men [who] ... are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save the most elemental--men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or be lost... As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.'— H.L. Yes, I remember Dark Shadows-used to run home from school to watch it only to run out of the TV room (yes, we called it that back then) screaming and laughing with fright and thrills.

I remember Mike Conners as Mannix, too-ultra cool guy and standing in a long line at the movie theater to see Jaws and looking at every wave at the beach that summer to see if a shark was there.

BTW what really made me feel old was the mail this week. My daughter got her invitation to the Senior Breakfast the first day of school to kick off her senior year in high school. She can also vote in the next election for President so I'm feeling ultra old right now.

If I come out, does FMF promise not to hit me?

I do, on occasion, feel old (yes, I know I'm only twenty). It usually happens when I think of the younger celebrities that are currently popular. Hillary Duff? Lindsay Lohan? Rihanna? All younger than me. When I think about the fact that they're all busy being big stars and I'm sitting here working a desk job, it not only makes me feel old, but is also a little depressing. But then again, I don't think I'd enjoy the celebrity life. Getting chased by paparazzi? Where does that get fun?

I'll make you feel younger. My sister had the world's biggest crush on Bobby Sherman. She also had that record album of his (with the green cover) and he was the reason she watched 'Here Comes the Brides." And who remembers that that show also had David Soul who went on to play Hutch of 'Starsky and Hutch?'

Man, so many things listed make me feel old. Right now, it's the Rice Krispies noises my knees make.

Watched Mannix. Preferred Hawaii 5-O. I also remember Dark Shadows being on, and the big thrill? Going to our neighbor's hose so we could watch it in color!

And for the record...I lived in suburbia, SE Mich, and wore hip-hugger bellbottoms when I was in grade school, and it wasn't considered whorish; it was just the style of the times like the grunge look was later.

Who remembers tube tops and how much they didn't stay up if you were above a 'b' cup?

And you especially enjoyed when they rolled down when the girls dared to breathe, right?

For the record, I visited the Smithsonian last month and was wandering around their "History of Computers" exhibit. Along with a big old main-frame computer, they had a huge deck of punched cards and a textbook on FORTRAN on diplay.

Yep, it was the same textbook I used in college.

My sister had a computer course in high school...Yeah the ones with the punch cards. She broke it. She typed in that it's mother wore combat boots. I kid you not.

I took programming courses in BASIC in the early 80's.

GOBLUEGUY

When my kids (students, I'm a teacher) act superised that I play video games and then look at me quizzically(sp?) when I tell them that I started out with a pong machine, an IBM PC Jr., and an Atari 2600. The usual response I get is "What's Atari?"

Well, there's another gray hair from the kids ::shrug::

YINYANG

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

Full House re-runs. Of course, I'm not really old (under 18); but, I remember when I was five, and my mom called the WB about Full House because it hadn't come on one day, and they told me it was cancelled. I was heartbroken.

Forgive me, for I am new.

LOL! Sorry, YinYang, but you don't get to talk about feeling old for about another 20 years.

Just the fact that my college degree is older than you are makes me feel old.

Just the fact that I'd started my SECOND career before you were born makes me feel old.

Wait until you hit 40 or so, and then we can talk...

RAE

Had to respond to this one. Other than my oldest son graduates from high school this year, and my youngest will be driving soon...

I went into McDonald's awhile back, and on a whim ordered a box of McDonaldland cookies. The punk with the nose ring informed me that "Cookies come in bags. They've never come in boxes"

He's lucky he survived....

NVGHOSTRIDER

Lets ee now:
Saw Raiders in the theater. Had no clue it was that long ago.

Loved watching Hart to Hart, Rockford files, Bonanza, Little House, Have gun Will Travel. Though mostly in reruns, They still looked good to me.

Eighties music on oldies station. Talk about BS.

Still say "And knowing is half the battle". I'm such a dork.

Can't stand the fact all these retard little kids think that cars weren't fast before The Fast And the Furious. They never rode in a car that didn't come from the factory with seat belts, air bags, and a radio and could easily push 140 without a bottle. Time to call out the old timers and their rusty rods to show 'em all whats up.

River6213- I don't get all the flak you get and I'm twice as cynical as you. Folks must really have a hard time taking good hearted sarcasm. Just don't get it. Think I'll go dust off some vinyl to try and reach the mindset of yesteryear.
And in my neck of the woods, if you were dressed as stated was the "fashion" in the sixties, you might make it home breathing with one testicle.
Thats pretty bad considering Natives are fairly accepting of folks with eccetricities. The whole world didn't revolve around fashion and what was "in". Who cares what band you saw or who you hung out with nearly forty years ago. I give two s^*ts if you thought you were cool back then. Geezer really got me fired up. Thanks River for bein' around to draw out his true side. I think that may be your special power. Helping people show their true insecurities.
This is why I both love you and fear you. You are on the hero list.

Realizing that the girls that I date wear panties that are 300% larger than the average pair at Victoria's secret.
