like Seryn, I could point out every single little mistake, flaw and "I could have done that better", but I'm not going to and just bask in a job done.

well, you'll be very very pleased to kknow that i got your letter!

the second one, seems like global priority or whatever its called it the way to go!

I've been very bad and not done anything today, I have that interview tomorrow, so i've been preparing for that.

But, trims purchased and waiting to go on, I looked at the bindings, but their satin range is crap, so i'm going to the larger store at some point.

I did have something else to say. What was it? oh, i'm tired, need to sleep. The top looks fantastic by the way!

As for the triangle inserts, what you said seems the wisest course of action, so i'll do that. Like i said, i think in the original, they were simply whipstitched in after the fact.

Tristan, its been said before, but the boots really are, for want of a better word, perfect.

see, i thought that the seam was something you had to do, but its actually a design feature They are a perfect facsimile - 'cept you need to put yours on and go roll about in the dirt for a bit.

They're to cleen - gotta give em that beat up old faithfuls look.

My mother listened in horror today when i told her how i planned to start rubbing soap and grapite powders and salt water etc into my pirate stuff, on top of scraping them about and stretching the pockets - I tried to explain that pirates didn't do dry cleaning, but she wouldn't have it.

Ah well.

Yeah, sorry. I think I started that.

No new updates for me. Last night I got a bit lazy and watched The Village on cable and knit Jayne hats instead. The only thing I did was make a head scarf for Mai to match her costume and sewed a snap onto my pink chinese blouse because the toggles don't like to stay...toggled..and it's not appropriate for me to be flashing people at work.

And that's it. Must order more yarn today as I'm nearly completely out of wool.

Only updates I have are that I started on the second Browncoat last night...I'm about 1/4 the way through it. I still have to finish the DPR headpiece/mask thingy and then focus on the wife's stuff.
Flashing people at work wouldn't be so bad, would it?

well, i worked out what the problem with the sewing of the bone channels was - ME.

yup, tryin to be all fancy and high falutin and usin all the correct presser feet and what not. when i just used the normal foot and made a little mark on it where the previous line of stitching had to run, then i got neater channels with less gathering and puckering and in half the bleedin time.

I am very glad tha i discovered this BEFORE i did most of the thing. the messy bit is confined to the stomacher wich is going to be covered over with braid and laces and the outside is as neat as a pin.

I'm happy!

My interview went well - after all this prep and notes reminding myself to tell them how intelligent sensible and reliable i am, what got the best reaction was my total and utter disregard for actorly airs and graces.

Question like 'do you think this is a glamorous field to work in?'
'if a high profile actor was talking loudly on his mobile, and you were unable to hear a customer and it was annoying them, what would you do?'

The answers i gave were 'hell no! - about 99% toil to be honest ' and 'very politely apologies, put the customer on silent then tell the actor that if they can't be quiet then they should go elsewhare' got big grins. They also asked about 'what i would do with the personal information i overheard' (nothing! really, whatever you hear, it's never as interesting as they think it is) and that got a good reaction, so hopefully...

And the fabrics are lovely Serenity - they all coordinate beutifully - they didn't have a great selection of bindings at my local store, so hopefully soon i'll get to the large liverpool store, and get a good colour. I just have to get the bone channels out of the way, thats the biggest job, and the most annoying, but afterthat, the end is very near.

And i cant turn my attention to the slinky dress.

Yay for good interviews!

Yay for figuring out the boning channels and for all of it.

My news: I mailed off Mai's costume today. FINALLY. Now, I just have to wait for it to arrive, and pray pray pray that it fits.

Seryn: have I told you lately how much I love you and how great you are for doing this for me? I can't wait for D*C.

I'm supposed to go to a meeting tonight, but I'm kinda hoping to get out of it so I can work on my costume instead.

Oh, and I'm so glad you like my fabrics. I thought it very serendipitous that they matched so well. (or, is that seryndipitous? )

Enough blathering from me today! Back to work. Eh.

THank you!

And tristan - everything is so crossed out of hope for this job now, i think i'm loosing circulation.

Off to the liverpool store now to get the odds and ends - though i may have to order your laces on line, but we'll see.

thank you tristan, i hope you are right!

Yes i would like the pistol thingies, would giving you the cash at the con be ok?

i'll post a link to the ones i want.

I found some (or cotton cord that is exactly like them) in the liverpool abakans - seeing as i had to spend over four pounds on your bias binding when if abakans had only had a decent range it would have only cost 80p, i thought it best to go with that - it was what we used to use as lacing in college, and its good strong stuff.

If you still want the exact corset laces, the flat natural coloured ones, then i'll send off for them, its pointless you getting them as the postage would be stupid, unless you can find an american site doing them, i'll google later, must eat!

Yup these are the ones - http://www.offthedeepend.com/pc-381-45-blunderbuss-pistol.aspx

would it be best to have one or two? one tucked into sash? i don't know. order two, and if it turns out that way, someone else can have the other. ok?

I will also be working on a skirt for the wife...she and some friends are doing the slutty version of the Harry Potter girls...that should be fun!

Y'all sew well this weekend. I may not be able to check in again until Monday.

ok, corset laces - these guys look to be serving the States - http://www.axfords.com/Site/index.cfm?FUSEACTION=Search.Style&REF=Acce
ssories&STYLE=Corset%20Laces

these guys are more expensive, but postage may be cheaper - http://www.corsetconnection.com/order_laces.htm

and these are the guys i'm getting the other stuff from, so if you want me to get them, then its really no problem - http://www.corsetconnection.com/order_laces.htm

I think you'll need at least 5yds, more if you wish, of course, on some it jumps straight to 10yds, but if you want to get them, i have to tubing stuff to finish off the newly cut ends (as long as the hotel has an iron or a hairdryer)

Well, your corset is almost there - bone channels in! I've got to sew on the trim (nice excuse to sit down stairs and rewatch Firefly and Wonderfalls - yey!)which i've just finished pinning in place and it looks fab, then pop in the bones and put on the binding.

oh, and put in the eyelets - but that will be fun with my perky little tool-for-putting-in eyelets-with-out-the-buggering-about-with-plastic-bits-and-hammers.

the end is in sight! are you excited yet?

I know i've not posted progress photo's - i meant to keep a whole diary, but every time i asked my sister if i could borrow her camera she ummed and ahhhed and errred - god knows why but she doesn't want me to use it -and my mothers camera is out of juice and incomprehensible even when working, so no photo's, but if i have to sneak into my sisters house and liberate the camera with out her knowing i will do to get a photo of the completed thing to you - unless you want the surprise?

basically the same stuff - its all soft cotton woven cord, like a very long, very very strong shoelace.

I had a look at the photo's again, and from what i can guesstimate, 6yds should be fine.

I got some of the trim sewn on tonight! it look fab, only with three 'rows' it was very wide, so I omitted the line running down the front edge on the outer peice (along the inside of the row of eyelets), so it starts at the front edge and goes straight out, then down in line with the seam, and you still have the trim on the front of the stomacher showing down the centre - i pinned it all on and it looked ridiculous, very crammed in, so i made a fudge-ment call (like a judgement call, only slightly less professional sounding ) and left those ones off - is that ok?

oh! its all coming together!

I'm sure its going to look fab. I trust yu.

I'm having kittens over my skirt. I've got it all sewn up and it's looking great, but I kept having problems with the elastic in the wasteband. Finally, it occured to me that the skirt is just too heavy, so it's stretching out the elastic so I just can't make it fit. So, I ripped that out after about 3 tries and dug up some old cord I had left over from something or another and decided to put that in instead, because then I can tie it tight. But I got halfway around the skirt and the safety pin I was using fell off and I can't get it back out so now I'm trying to pull the cord the rest of the way though without it. My fingers hurt.

And ooh! Big lightning.

So, I'll order 6 yds of lacing tomorrow. The the pistols because I went to order them and then got distracted and ran out of time the other day. Must order pistols!

Tristan, check my LJ, my skirt is up there.

I've nearly finished my blouse. I just ran out of elastic. And then I decided I'm redoing the sleeves because I don't like their bell shape as much as I thought I would.

If you start advertising that you make browncoats (and are selling them for a decent price) you could find yourself VERY busy very soon. I can barely keep up with Jayne hat supply and demand and I'm not the only one making them.

Are you doing the bell-flare from the elbows, or are they just ending there?

Yes...it also turns out I can make them quicker than I thought, once I get to the actual cutting and sewing part. It's the patterning that slows me down...math makes my brain shut down after too long.

I hate math. It makes my head swarmy.

But now you've done it, you can make the coats to fit various people? Or do you have to redo the math each time?

The bell part was after the elbow. It gathers at the elbow and then flares out, but it's too much so I'm going to trim it back. See, I had just taken the full length sleeve pattern and chopped it shorter, but what would have looked nice at the wrist isn't working for me at the elbow. You'll see it when I'm done, I think I can fix it up.

That sleeve sounds like something I fell for before my wedding...and actually incorporated it into the wife's dress...semi-fitted to the elbow, then a big bell-flare that comes out to about mid-arm. I'm looking forward to seeing your whole outfit! Don't forget, I still have a sword and scabbard for you.

I have a solid cloth pattern that fits me, but I can build one to fit anyone...I just have to adjust up or down from my pattern. And that takes a bit of math. That, and laying out the pattern pieces on the leather so as not to either waste leather or cut across a bad spot; my brain goes from math to geometry to a happy shut-down place where all I can do is sit down for a spell.
It's really not all that bad after the first few.

ok, hi peoples!! jumping right into the middle now, but i'm making a kaylee costume for D*C and haven't exactly...um...started yet, hehe. whoops. i can't seem to find the perfect jumpsuit...it has to be an olive green/brown color, zipper down front, and i can't seem to find it. any ideas or websites where i could go?

also, tristan, you offered in another thread to give me instructions on making a teddy bear patch. i wasn't able to respond because i was in a hurry and then i lost the thread. didn't want you to think the offer wasn't appreciated and *hug* is the offer still out there? if anyone else knows of a place where there are some good teddy bear patches like kaylee's please tell me. i haven't found any i like as of yet, but you might know of some that i haven't seen.

EngineAngel, yes I did make those...it's ok, I love the fact that people think they look good! Makes me feel all accomplished and stuff.

As far as Kaylee goes, I am willing to help. The teddy bear patch pattern is at home (and I'm at work right now), so I can't give that to you right now. Suffice to say I cut the pattern out of brown, shaggy upholstery material and then did zig-zag machine stitches and hand-stitching to finish it off. It is not perfect, but it passes muster. As to the jumpsuit, I had to buy one, and then remove a bunch of pockets along with the sleeves...and then put pockets back on in the right places. The good news is that it only took about a day to do all this, and there is enough cloth left over from the sleeves to accomplish everything. I have lots of pictures of my wife's Kaylee outfit on photobucket; PM me if you want the link.

Do you think it'll be shiny this year? I'm also thinking of going to the wash wake, what about you?

I think i'm going to have to just choose a jumpsuit, whether it's exact or not. I found a perfect one except it has velcrow instead of a zipper, and i don't know how to put a zipper on. any insights?

Engie: If we go to Buffy Prom then it'll be fun because we'll make it fun!

It was rather lame last year. Nothing compared to our Shindig. It stinks that they get to have prom again but we don't get to have our OVERCROWDED LINES DOWN THE STREET TO GET IN party. :(

I'd leave the velcro, seems to me, if you don't know how to do zippers. Zippers are a pain (I think, Tristan probably majored in them. lol.) I think if you get a cute top to wear under, get your patches situated and find a parasol, you'll be good to go!

the problem with me getting the one with the velcro and just leaving the velcro is that it's not like kaylee's, and i want it to be as right as possible.

EngineAngel, if there is a military surplus store near you (assuming you are State-side), just purchase a flight suit, and you can modify those pretty easily. The one I bought cost $35.00 all told, and it turned out pretty good...the hardest time I had was finding good pictures of the Chinese characters she had drawn all over it...

there is a military surplus store nearby, that's the one i went to and found the velcrow suit. They had others but none of them were the right color. Some were close...I suppose i'm being too picky though, I'm notorious for that.

I think that a browncoat is a little less complicated than a corset.

Besides, I appreciate that you're taking your time and doing a great job. yay.

Also: Mai got her costume today.

AND IT FITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I am very very happy.

Whooooooooooo - HoooooOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

oh theres nothing better than when a costume fits - i remember making a pair of jeans, and when he tried them on he said they were really comfy, but then to top it all off, his girlfriend commented on the fact that they made his ass look great, which, when you spend your life trying to make flattering clothes, is brilliant.

and to do it blind as well - you need a humugous clap on the back! well done! are you really going to be in the parade? we'll have to print off business cards to give to all the folks who ask about yours and Mai's costumes (yes, we do take commisions, but only if we like you)

And i shall watch and clap. there ain't no way your getting me on a stage.

There's no stage. It's a street.

The parade is mondo fun. But, I bet it's also fun from the crowds on the streets.

Good news: I FINISHED MY BLOUSE!

Took me nearly 2 hrs to pick the lace and hems off what I'd already done, and then it was a quick matter of trimming the sleeves down, repinning and resewing. But I like how it turned out.

Pictures soon. I was too tired last night to bother.

TRISTAN

Morning, all you stitchers of doom!
Thank you for the 'props', Seryn, but Serenity is correct...the Browncoats are much easier than a corset would be. You probably don't want to hear that I have two more cut out (for actual customers!) and should have them done by the weekend.
I need opinions here. I am working on Mal's suspenders (I built them using thick canvas) and have just recently dyed them. I include a picture of them draped over the shirt I am going to wear...the opinion I need is do I have the coloring and shape right? I know you can't see anything but the front, but that is usually all we see...
If you have the time, let me know what you think. Thanks in advance!

Oh, and Serenity, a big "Woot!" for completing the blouse!

-EDIT-
Whoa, sorry that came out so big...thought I had resized it properly...

The colour and cut looks great to me, Tristan. The only thing I thought was that maybe the wide part is a bit too long? I'd have to see a picture of Mal's to be sure, but they look fantastic. Very authentic.

Also, the picture is rather big, so that might be it.

Serenity, thanks. In looking at the picture, I realized I have them pulled forward a bit far. I think what I'll do tonight is take some better front and back pictures of them where they are supposed to be. And I'll make them smaller, too!
