At this point, the situation is this -

Having evaded the Epsilon's previous owner, Safe, with Citizen and his crew on board the two ships, the Epsilon and the Dagger, has returned to Boros, to meet up again with Seryn, Needy, and hopefully Wisp and Vixen. Seryn and Needy had remained behind in the flight to look for Wisp and Vixen who had plummeted to an uncertain fate during a tussel. They (S & N) had managed to find Vixen, and in attempting to get her medical help, had ended up in the local jail, where Vixen previous misdemeanors where uncovered and got her sent to the Halo facility - an Alliance prison on the planet. S & N were freed, and after a brief mooch around a local bar, decided to set off for the town that the facility was in, and try and find some way of locating Wisp, (who unknown to them had been found by three kids, Truth, Shadow and Ghost, and sent to the hospital) and rescuing Vixen.
Safe had left the crew completing repairs to the Dagger, and hired a hover-mule , in which, unknown to him, the small child Ghost was hiding. Getting into town just as S & N were heading that way (don't you love it when its all neat like that?)

In the larger town, Soul, now dressed in a uniform of some sort, joins them, and Safe gets hold of scrubs for them, and they prepare to try and infiltrate the hospital in search of Wisp, when the boy himself emerges from an alley way. Overjoyed they go to greet him, and only realise they are being ambushed by Alliance troops when it is too late.

Surrounded on all sides by purplebellies, they have little option but to try and get back to the mule and fight their way out. In an effort to confuse and disorganise the soldiers, Seryn attacks and trys to incapacitate their cammander. With a pencil. It turns out to be a really stupid thing to do, it doesn't work at all, and triggers a firefight in which all but Needy and Soul are injured in some way.

All are moved to a secure section of the hospital, and treated as their captors, a group called The Crimson Guard, see fit.

Also in the hospital is a man, one of the doctors, who claims to be a member of the underground movement, and is working on a way of getting them out.

Hopefully soon, as if Wisp keeps writing himself treatment like this, he's going to be paste before long, and no nifty manouvering is going to get him out other than in a bucket.

Also, back on the Epsilon, Rosie, the tree lady who they made friends with on the first night there, has been attacked and pretty brutally savaged by a very creepy shady little character, so i would say that she is no more, but fear not! TRM has promised us that he's not through with the baranch yet.

SAFEAT2ND

OOC: Thank-you WYSB and TRM!

Squinting at the light, Safe can make out two figures standing in front of the chair he’s strapped to.

Safe straightens up. “It’s about time you guys got me outta there.” He smiles at the figures. “Your men coulda been a little more gentle. I had the situation well in hand…”

“Cut the crap Captain. But that title doesn’t apply anymore, does it?” One of the figures says impatiently “Or should I just call you Seth, or Franklin, Oh, I know … Safe…” He sneers the word. “Not such a fitting handle for you, now is it.” This last statement brought laughter from the other figure.

“Who are you?” Safe asks, trying to buy some time to figure things out.

“That is not important. What is important, the reason for our cozy little get together, is that you have some information that we would like.”

“Umm… don’t pee on an electric fence??”

“Ha ha ha, very funny Franklin. Keep it up and you’ll find our humour a little painful. Now tell us about the anomaly.”

‘Hunh?’ “Well you see, the electricity travels up the pee and zaps Mr. happy….”

The first blow snaps Safe’s head back.

“Now that was uncalled for.” Safe says, shaking his head.

“The space anomaly, tell us about the space anomaly. Your friends have told us most of it… after a little…persuading.” Both men chuckle.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

One of the men stands next to Safe. Placing his hand on Safe’s shoulder, he leans down close, digging his thumb into the bullet hole. “Oh, we think you do know.”

Safe grits his teeth at the pain. The room swims. “There you go...” he gasps trough his teeth “working without tools…”

Safe’s hand snaps up, grabbing the offending thumb and bending it back quickly until he’s rewarded with a loud popping noise and the resulting scream.

The other figure jams a taser into Safe’s neck, causing him to convulse releasing the other man’s thumb.

“So, we’re going to do this the hard way. Your choice.” The first figure gasps holding his thumb. “The boy, Wisp, cried like a baby when we broke his legs” Safe gripped the arms of the chair, his knuckles going white.

“Soul… well money was his only motivation. He walked out of here a rich man.”

“The companion, the woman, and the little girl… well, we had a different form of spirit breaking for them.”

“You’re lying…” Safe says with a flat tone, barely containing his anger. His legs and arms tensed as he strained against the restraints.

“Your friend, Seryn is it? She broke after only an hour of “fun” in the soldier’s barracks. The little girl didn’t last an hour…”

There was a squealing of metal as the chair holding Safe broke free of the floor. Covering the distance between himself and the man with the broken thumb in a heartbeat, Safe tackled the man to the floor.

“YOU WANNA PLAY ROUGH EH?!?” Safe screamed at the man, his face inches from the other. “I’ll play rough alright!!” With that he head butted the man in the face, shattering his nose.

The interrogator looked up through the blood and pain at the wildman pinning him down and felt fear for the first time.

Safe continued to head butt the man in the face, oblivious to the kicks from other interrogator. Finally, setting the taser on max, he jams it into Safe’s neck. Safe convulses. It seems to go on forever, the smell of burnt hair filling the room, until Safe drops.

Interrogator 2 press a button on the desk. “Send a crew up here to clean this up.”

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

Earlier:

“Well I’ll be damned” Safe muttered with restrained delight.

Needy turned to look upon the figure behind them. A figure from beyond the grave
“Wisp”
His excitement over the fact though was soon dampened when a voice whispered into his ear
“Remain calm.”
It was the Serenity-form, standing there with knowledge of what was about to happen
“Wh…”
“Trust me.”
Before Needy could ask what was about to happen, the truth became clear.
Soldiers had begun to surround them. No way around. No Escape. The renegade crew were about to know the penalty of rebellion.
Needy turned to the being standing beside him. “You knew? Why didn’t you warn me?”
“This is how it must take place. You need to trust me. All will become clear in time”
“You’ve said that before” Needy mutters under his breath, not wanting anyone to know he was talking to something only he could see, yet again. Not that it mattered, at this point; his friends were all taking cover from the bullets that ricocheted around them – witnessing one of their own apparently talking to himself was the least of their problems.
“Do you trust me?”
Needy hesitates before replying “Yes”.
“Good. Now do exactly as I say”

“Alec” remained in character until he had left the news building far behind him.
He had never had much love for the media. All too often, they would spin a tall-tale and if the story was true, then it would no doubt be biased to some extent.
Having said that, he knew there were some reporters out there that strived for the truth. Their stories reflected that, what was written was the unbiased, cold hard truth. But stories like that were few and far between. Normally, some big boss would step in and twist the story for their own means, or because they felt that the people wouldn’t want to know
“Let the people decide” was “Alec’s” opinion. “Don’t tell us what we want to hear. We want the truth”
Ironically, he had just been involved in perverting the same truth he worked to maintain.
He didn’t want to do it, but as hard as it may have been for him to admit, he knew that some lies needed to be told… for the safety of others.

Reaching into his inside jacket pocket he fingered the envelope of money he had been given by Carl Perry, the editor of Boros Band – the only network he could respect. As he had told the man back in his office, he didn’t do this for the money. What he hadn’t told him though, was the real reason he had done it.
Pushing past the envelope he found his mobile cortex and pulled it out.
Quickly hitting the “recall” button, he waited for the man on the other line to pick up.

Instead, he got a woman.

“What’s up Jay?” Flechette answered

“Is Jack with you” the man that had previously gone by the name “Alec” responded.

“Yeah, he’s here.” She moved the cortex so that the video screen showed Jack seated next to her, flying what he assumed was the copter they had picked up not so long ago.

“Hey Jay” Jack called, balancing his attention between the conversation and his flight path.

“I’ve just been to see Perry.”

“And?” Jack asked

“It’s done.”

“Good”

“As far as they know, Needy’s dead”

Milton had felt strangely comfortable sitting with Versa, even though they had only just met.
But even so, he was slightly unnerved by the whole situation.
He knew the underground resistance existed – who didn’t? – but even though he never truly saw them as the bad guys, he couldn’t exactly picture joining them. Sure The Alliance was not to be trusted, but could he trust this group either? There were just too many questions. Not only that, but even if the resistance was full of the most noble and righteous people he’d ever met, he’d still be committing to a dangerous life. Could he live his life constantly in hiding, looking over his shoulder all the time to make sure he wasn’t about to be killed?
He didn’t know. He had not known a life like that except in the movies. All his adult life had been spent training to be a companion. To go from that to being a fighter for the resistance was a tough concept to grasp.

A buzzing interrupted his thoughts.
It seemed the co-pilot had received a call on her cortex, though Milton struggled to see who the man on the other side of the call was or what exactly he was saying. He could here a word or two, but nothing too clear.
He managed to guess they were talking about a job, and he was sure that the man mentioned someone named Perry.
Versa began to talk to him about trivial matters – how he was doing, his life as a companion – but all he was interested in was what was going on.
Then in the middle of the noise of the copter, the wind and Versa’s questions, he heard two words that terrified him
“Needy’s dead”
Suddenly, he was no longer merely unnerved and hesitant, but now more determined than ever. These people were responsible for the death of his mentor.
He may not have been a fighter, but he was damned if he let them get away with it.

Lizzie banged on the door of the basement room three times then once then three times just as theyd told her. She was terrified. She had been dragged from her ordinary life to treat a man who was her perfect man in a coma a few days ago and was now barely a pile of flesh.

The door opened and the suited man stood there again. His jacket still bore the specks of blood that had come from his recent torture sessions.
"Is he ready for us to continue??"

"NO" She replied trying to be firm as her voice trembled "He needs immediate medical care"

"You just gave him that. He still hasnt told us what we need to know"

"Youve beaten him within an actual inch of his life, Have you ever thought he might not know???"

"Were almost certain he doesnt"

"Then WHY continue??"

"In case he does"

"Well if you so much as hit him again his body wont be able to take it. His kidneys have already started shuting down and hes lost more blood than the textbooks say you can. You either let me treat him or he WILL die"

The man pondered for a second. "Fine" He said with obvious disappointment and agression "But he does not leave this room. Go and fetch whatever you require and bring it back here"

"He probably needs SURGERY i cant do that here!!" The man stepped close to her so she could feel his breath on her face, it smelt of nothing like a machines exhaust more than air.

"Do not try me girl. If you take him out of this room I will make you watch as we finish him off then do things to you rapists and paedophilles would be abhored at" She could have screamed and cried and collapsed at his words. The lack of emotion and something in his tone scared her.

She ran off to gather supplies for the dying man who still didnt have a name.

Ghost sat silently in the corner of the now empty room. All the captured adults had long since been taken from the room. The other adults hadn't been back in since.

She wasn't entirely sure they knew she was still there. She was really good at being invisible.

But now she was bored.

SERYN

At the end of his shift, the doctor exchanged his soiled scrubs for casual clothes, and made his way out to one of the local bars. The knee surgery had been a new one – intensive and extremely fiddly, but it was rare that he got to do that kind of work. He had to remember to thank her for pissing people with guns off in his area.
After a few pints spent propping up the bar and chatting with the owner, he retired to his normal table, and gradually fell into conversation with a drunk at the next.
Their conversation centred mainly on the drunks appreciation for fine scotch, and the bountiful charms of the barmaid, but after a while, changed to the slightly less well trodden subject of the new inmates at the medical facility.

Shortly after the drunk raised himself to his feet and went to try and sample the barmaids charms for himself, and in short order discovered the cobble stones of the alley behind the building.
Along a seemingly random route, he slipped through the concealed entrance to a small courtyard, and through the privy houses beyond it into the tunnels below.
Avoiding the waste tunnels, he took a complicated series of turns, eventually finding himself in the cosy headquarters’ of the Boros Resistance, with more than just a little juicy gossip to share.

The lift went down for at least 3 minutes at a fair pace. She felt underdressed in her grey jumpsuit next to the smartly dressed youngster. She hadnt washed in days either, She could see the boys nose twitching and his politness being strained and inwardly she blushed. She hadnt blushed outwardly since she was 8 and a boy had smiled at her.

When the doors opened the room was entirely not what she expected the floor was sand the walls were a strange blue hologram which gave the perception of miles of sea and blue sky beyond. There was a deep blue pool straight infront which curved round to her leftending by the door. She walked to the right to see a man sitting on what could only be reffered to as a throne surrounded by young scantily clad girls.

Her embarrasment was now leaking out of her. She was usually the warrior type but the stress and conditions she was now faced with made her feel just like a little girl again. With a gun she could be someone. She could do anything strike fear into the hearts of men, conquer any challenge and overcome any obstacle. Now she was just her.

The man was in his late fifties with grey hair. He wore a pair of hawaian shorts with a matching shirt. When he saw her approach he waved his arms and the girls left his side and began froliking in the pool. She approached him and stood with her arms crossed across her front.

"Miss Goddard good to see you can i get you anything?? Drink??"

"Im fine" She replied tersley

"Yes yes. Do you know why youre here??"

"No. But of you want me to be one of your groupies then youve got another thing coming"Her gaze was stern and unfaltering

"No no theyre petty crooks who were brought here for the benefits if people like me. You are here because someone on the outside likes you"

"Thats a pretty narrow list gramps, U sure youve got the right gal?"

"Yes, You see im a member of the resistance. Not active as the prison system doesnt allow me all kinds of freedoms. Anyway, We have become interested in a group of people the alliance are questioning and they are connected to you. Ive been requested to keep you safe until you can be released"

"Released???"

"Figure of speach rescued more like. Till that point theres a spare room down here for you and some clothes and a washroom"

She didnt respond although she wanted to jump for joy and scream with happiness.

The young man pointed to a door behind the throne and stepped through.

Ok, so you might not have known I was gone since my name has continued to show up in this thread.
That's thanks to Safe who was kind enough to send me updates of the thread, and allow me to send him my own contributions for him to post in my name.
What a guy!

I missed all you folks - a lot more than its probably healthy to miss a site.
I tried everyday to get back but never had luck... until today. Thanks again to Safe sending me on of the threads about problems with the site.
WHAT A GUY!

Seriously though, all you guys (and gals) are great, and I've really enjoyed reading the different posts in this story. It's kept me sane! (Well almost)

I'm just about to go to work (late I know) but wanted to say hey, and hopefully I'll be more involved with the story from now on

Peace!

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

OOC: Thanks all. Now on with the story:
---

Earlier:
Needy sat quietly in the cell. He had already seen most of his colleagues vanish via the opening in the ceiling. It was just a matter of time before he too would be similarly taken.
He felt the restrainer brace wrapped around his left wrist. Unlike the others, his body would not shut down when it became active… but the doctors didn’t need to know that.
“When the time comes, play dead. I’ll take care of the rest” the being had whispered to him.
The mere suggestion of it would normally have sent Needy into a fit of anxiousness, but that was the old Needy, the Needy that hadn’t relied on the soothing calm the being freely provided. He was a different man now, he had to be. He had to show the being that he’d accepted the fact that he had died once, and that that former life died along with him. Now he had to put confidence in the one that brought him back to life.

A whirring stimulated his senses.

The device had become active. Now it was his turn to do what must be done - to play dead. That should be easy – he’d had enough training in role-playing… pretending one was dead was, as disturbing as it may sound, an often requested sexual fantasy.

The remaining ones in the room watched as the former companion swayed before collapsing in a heap on the floor.

“Gorram it,” he thought. “I’m supposed to fall on the bed. The others fell on their beds. How the hell are they gonna lift me outta here? I can’t exactly get back up, go to the bed and pretend to pass out again. Smooth Needy, real smooth – you’re such a genius… idiot!”
His worries are soon silenced though by the being.
Stepping up close it commands him to “sleep” and in an instant his body complies. He is placed in a deep rest, much like that one brought about by the restrainer, in order to persuade the captors that their device had worked on him.
What they failed to recognize though, was that Needy was not under their control, but the being’s – who could waken him at any time.

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

“Open your eyes” the being instructed Needy.
Although he had been conscious for a while, nobody else in the room realized that.

Directly in front of him were two men, one seated opposite whilst another stood in the background – his facial features obscured by deep shadow.
The one cast in light was middle-aged, but with receding grey hair and a neatly kept beard. He wore a suit, although his jacket was resting on the back of an unoccupied chair beside him. His shirt sleeves were rolled up as if he meant business, but Needy knew straight away that any methods he would use were more likely to involve words of persuasion rather than acts of violence.

“Mr Needham” the bearded man spoke, after opening up a file in front of him
Needy glared at the man addressing him, but made no reply.

“Mr Bernard Needham”

Still, Needy remained silent.

“Trained companion hailing from Londinium before being transfered to Boros. It was a personal request to be transferred was it not? Why was that?”

The bearded man waited for a few seconds before he realized the companion would not reply.

“Let me guess, it was a woman.” The man scanned Needy’s eyes for confirmation of the fact, but his emotionless gaze revealed nothing. “Despite a slow start, you soon built up a strong and loyal clientele and recommendations that placed you high on the list of requested companions.

“Then of course you took on the wrong client – a certain Miss Clayton that brought you crashing down to earth. With your reputation ruined and your clientele disappearing fast, you started acting out. Became involved with disreputable people and were arrested on more than one occasion for disorderly conduct.”

By this point, the interrogator had begun to pace around the room as he recited the information from Needy’s file. Then he stopped behind his chair, and with sincere eyes looked directly at him.

“We all make mistakes. I for one completely understand how being betrayed by someone can send you over the edge. The business you got up to immediately after your exposure can be forgiven – swept under the rug so to speak. But taking up a permanent position on a ship full of wanted criminals – this runaway vessel they call Sereni-Tree – that is something different entirely.

“These are traitors… murderers… how could a morally upright person like you willingly join up with these?”

Needy remained silent before his captor answered his own question.

“You couldn’t. That’s how. You were placed on board under duress. The only reason you stayed was because you had no choice. That is why you left the ship and came back here. You wanted to use the opportunity to escape. To get back to your life as it was. “

The man was offering Needy a lifeline. A false story to stick to that would secure his freedom. Now it was only a matter of time before he told him what the catch was – what he’d have to give up to attain this freedom. Or “who” he’d have to give up.

“But they won’t let you will they? These traitors will not let you go because they know what they have… A weapon. That’s what you are, believe me, I’ve seen what you can do. You are a miracle. You can do things that most people can only do in their dreams. Survive gun shots. Heal otherwise untreatable wounds. Not even death can stop you. A man like you… could be used for great good, or great evil.”

Needy knew what the alliance would use him for, but he didn’t say it.

“I know what you’re thinking” the man continued “men in the government would use me as a weapon too. And you’re probably right. There has not been one scientific discovery made by man that hasn’t been used for evil means. The splitting of the atom – nuclear warfare. The creation of the aircraft – another means for war. Man is destructive to the very end. What you are is in fact the very opposite of warfare – you are the solution. Invincible. Imagine a world where people can not be harmed. But their bodies repair even the most fatal of wounds. You could advance scientific research by decades if not centuries”

“Of course we can’t run any tests otherwise my bosses would have done so already. What you can give us is truth. An explanation. You can buy your freedom. We only ask for the truth of how you accomplished this, how did you advance to the next stage of human evolution?”

“That’s it?” Needy uttered his first words since entering the room “That’s all you want to know?”

“That’s al..”

"No." The bearded man was interrupted by a voice behind him. The silent figure in the dark had decided it was time to speak. "Not quite"

His identity still a mystery, the man spoke slow and deliberately. “You were the one that opened the wormhole, tearing a hole through time and space. How did you do this? What device did you use? Did you create the device?”

The bearded man looked behind him at his colleague, shocked by the accusation thrown at the prisoner. Obviously, he hadn’t been given as much information as his mysterious colleague had been.

Needy smiled. “What makes you think it was me?”

He gets no answer, which in of itself produces another smile

“You want the truth? Truth isn’t always the easiest thing to hear.”
When his comment elicits no response, he continues “Fine, but you might want to sit down for this. It’s a loooong interesting story”

OOC: Ok, so I was going to add more to this, but I've been so pre-occupied with posting other things here, that I just haven't got round to it yet. Eventually I will

The Man They Call Soul...

Lieutenant Bayer turned and addressed the prisoner. “So, Marshall--”

“Marshall doesn’t exist any more.”

Bayer paused. He had been dealing with answers like that for the better part of a day, and he was beginning to tire of it.

“Marshall is your given birth name, correct?” he asked.

There was no reply.

“Strange thing is,” Bayer continued, “That’s all we have been able to find out about your name. Just Marshall. No last name, no family history, nothing. You just seem to simply ‘exist’. No more, no less.”

“Really? I exist?” came the sarcastic reply.

Bayer frowned. “I’m under orders not to harm you, but I can very easily claim that the prisoner tried to escape, and there was no other option…” He let the implied threat hang in the air.

But the prisoner laughed. “If you think you can kill me, feel free. I’ve been trying for years. It doesn’t work.”

Bayer’s face remained composed, but inside, he was smiling. The prisoner had just opened up a much-needed window. He reached into a coat pocket and produced a well-worn photograph--one actually made from paper--and set it down gently on the table.

“Tell me, Marshall, do you recognize this woman?”

* * *

Ciaran.

The face that blessed his dreams and haunted his nightmares was staring up at him, and try as he might, Soul could not turn away. All he could see was the bullet that ended her life, and the only part of the shooter he ever saw: a right arm bearing a tattoo of a laughing skull wearing a jester’s hat on a red diamond background. He shook his head, trying to banish away the memories.

“You lost her that night,” Bayer said. “You failed her that night.”

Soul didn’t reply. He was too busy fighting back the urge to let tears roll down his cheeks. Instead, he focused his energy into his neural interface, the one implanted above his left ear. Normally, he would have been able to tap into the security system in the building and play havoc with the sensors or something similar in order to secure a quick escape. He had underestimated his captors, though. A dull roar filled his head as the electronic interference did its work and prevented him from accessing any systems. Still, he continued rotating frequencies in the hope that he might still be able to break through the digital fog.

“Marshall,” Bayer said, turning Soul’s focus back to the outside world. “I know what her death did to you. The Expendables made a mighty fine offer to you, didn’t they? How many people did you kill on their behalf? And then the Parliament themselves brought you in as an Operative. They must have though highly of your work as an Expendable to offer you that position.”

Soul finally looked up from the photo. “Yeah, they thought I was a swell guy.”

Bayer ignored the comment and continued. “You had the life. Money, women, power, everything a man could want. All you had to do was do the Parliament’s dirty work every now and then, but even that didn’t satisfy you. You had to betray them and make yourself a fugitive. And in the end, that bought you how many years in Cryo?”

Soul simply stared back at Bayer without answering.

“How many years, Marshall? How many years did you spend frozen? How many years did you miss?”

“Don’t call me Marshall,” Soul growled.

“Fine!” Bayer laughed. “Is that your game? Well then, Soul, how many years did you spend in there?”

At that moment, a signal from Soul’s interface broke through the interference, and in the space of two seconds, he had shut off the cameras in the room, cut out the digital fog, and disabled the stun tazers hiding in the walls and ceiling, as well as the one Bayer carried on his belt. He let himself have a small grin.

“How many years? Twenty five,” Soul stated. “A quarter of a century as an ice cube.”

“That was a long time to be locked away, wasn’t it?”

Soul smiled wide. “Not long enough, apparently.”

Like an elastic band stretched and then released, Soul flew off of the chair and drove himself into Bayer’s chest, propelling the Lieutenant into the wall, and then into a crumpled ball on the floor. The guard just inside the door had a split second more to react that Bayer had, but Soul was moving too fast. Before the guard’s gun had cleared his holster, Soul had already reached out and snapped his neck, letting him drop dead to the floor. A siren sounded somewhere off in the distance, so Soul grabbed the photograph off of the table and bolted for the door.

“Soul…wait.”

As it always seems to happen in every escape story, Bayer’s voice made Soul pause, if only for a second.

“If you help us,” Bayer said between coughs, “If you give us what we’re looking for, we can give you something you’ve been looking for.”

Soul fought the instinct to simply turn and run. “And what would that be?”

Bayer removed another item from his pocket, this one a Cortex link, and slid it across the floor. Soul looked down slowly, and felt the blood drain from his face. It was a surveillance picture dated one week earlier. The quality wasn’t the best, but despite the grainy image, Soul could clearly see a figure in the foreground, the face in shadow, but the right arm bare and clear. A right arm bearing a tattoo of a skull wearing a jester’s hat on a red diamond background.

Soul swallowed loudly. “What do you want from me?”

Wisp came to in the redish room after an unknown length of time. He was on his back but managed to crane his head to see. The room was around 6foot across while 12ft long. The room had a single door at the opposite end to Wisp which was bordered by two tables. The effect divided the room into two areas. Wisp could see several white packages and boxes on the tables which seemed out of place in the bare room. Wisp momentarily lost his energy and his head fell back onto the floor. He realised that someone had put some bedding beneath him. They hadnt done an overly comfy job of it as the quilts and sheets were scrunched oddly but it was better than the concrete hed had previously.

Wisp heard a noise from behind him. He was laid in the middle of the open area with his feet to the door and tried to strain his head to look behind him. He could just manage to see a pair of shoes and the bottom of some legs. The shoes had a small heel so he could tell she was a woman.

Wisp returned his head to the uneven pillow and tried to move. His body surged with pain like a flood. While still his wounds were quiet and hadnt been forced but a simple movment caused the gates to open and the burning to return without mercy. He let out a pained moan that stirred the sleeping woman.

She took in a sharp breath as she awoke and stretched her arms in a yawn. He saw her feet dissappear towards his head. She ran her hands through her hair momentarily forgetting where she was. But soon she realised and spun herself round to her patient.

"Hey sweetcheeks" She said as she hovered above him "Glad your awake"

"Im not. Did someone throw me under a train while i was out??" She giggled innocently though Wisp could sense a hint of fear in her voice and guessed shed been threatened to help him.

"They really did you over. Do you know why???"

"Im pretty sure they said something about a bounced check but i cant be sure as they were hitting me with a chair at the time"

"Can you be serious for two seconds" She said with a grin "They were dangerous people and they must have had a reason."

Wisp rolled his eyes into the back of his head and sat quietly for a second. "Me and some friends got here by some sort of intergalactic space hiccup and they think we did it on purpose"

"Did you??"

"NO" Wisp emotion jarred his body again "Sorry torture relapse. It'll cost me thousands in therapy"

"They'll come back you know. They really want this technology you dont have"

"Yeah but I hope theyll get bored before then. Anyway enough about me Who are you?? You always seem to be there when i get knocked unconsious??"

"Well Im Lizzie im an intern here. I was your doctor last time you were hear" She permitted herself a genuine smile for a moment as she verbally poked him. She would have actually poked him but the hypocratic oath had strong views on that. "Then you did your little disappearing act on me and those guys showed up. They started calming me down and then they got all wierd but i got called away because someone was coding."

"Lucky they did otherwise you wouldnt have been here to fix me up"

"Im sure. Anyway after that I got on with my life for a few days till I got asked to come down to the basement here for a secret assignemnt and found you in all your glory"

Wisp questioned the last part but then realised he wasnt wearing anything but a sheet. They must have done it while he was being beaten, The second session was a blur.

"Yeah sorry about that. If id known theyred be company i would have got dressed up" She giggled again but then stared swaying back and forth and getting all fuzzy. Before He knew it the blackness was back.

SERYN

The doctor was close to completing his rounds for the day.

Such as they were. His patients were mostly so high on the security rating that, for all but the most critical, their progress was monitored from screens located outside their cells. A series of six screens were arranged before him, several were dark, their subjects being away, but two were lit up and bleeping happily.

He looked at the Antares womans charts. Too damn healthy! Why couldn't she have some kind of heart defect or some other lurking nasty? But her signs were strong, as were, when he called up the supplementary screen, the childs.

He looked at the monitor. In the room the young girl moved about aimlessly, food had been delivered a short while ago, and she picked disconsolatly at the items on the plate. Seryn slept on, he was keeping her as sedated as it was safe to - the healing process had been accelerated, and it wasn't pleasent. They didn't know he was doing that, but he figured it would help when the time came. If the others returned, he figured they'd need the same treatment - they wern't known for their light touch, he was surprised that she had got off so damage free.

He sighed, checked the balance of chemicals being fed to the occupants, and left.

All he needed now was word from the underground that they had his back, and were sending the help he needed, then he could start to put his plan into action. But for now he had to wait, nad hope that whatever was happening to Safe and his companions was in his power to fix.

Safe pried his eyes open. The pounding in his head made that simple movement, a sizable task.

Finally succeeding, he surveys his surroundings. He is strapped to a hospital style bed, in a small white room. The only other visible feature in the room was a closed circuit camera bubble mounted over the only door.

Tensing, Safe tests his straps, finding no give at all. He relaxes a moment and then throws his all into it. His back arched off the bed, Safe strains against the straps. His veins bulge at the stress, his teeth grind, the straps holding him down cut into his skin, but nothing gives. Pain shooting through his shoulder wound and the headache momentarily blinding him he collapses, panting, back onto the bed.

“GO SE!!!” He shouts, in frustration, at the ceiling.

APRILISE

They had given her food…it looked like good food too. That confused Ghost, she almost never got good food. The last time she remembered having a full plate of food like this offered to her bad things had happened. She didn’t remember exactly what but when she had woken up a few days later Truth and Shadow had been crying, and she had hurt all over.

She stared at the food for a looooong time before hunger got the best of her and she quickly grabbed a roll running to the corner furthest from the door and ate it quickly.

Ghost looked around nervously expecting something to happen. When nothing did she slowly stood up.

Maybe the adults forgot about her again, looking around she smiled as she saw something interesting to do.

Beds were made for jumping on weren’t they?

SERYN

The doctor stood again at the monitoring panels outside their room, he watched, smiling, the antics of the little girl, leaping about on one of the beds, for a while she'd been doing cicuits, jumping from one to another. It was rare that he got to see someone just having fun, pure innocent unrestrained fun. He grinned again, and turned back to the console, frowning.

"Doctor Sykes?"

A nurse stood behind him, frown on her face, "Is everything ok?"

"What? Oh, yes, some wierd readings from this room, the Antares woman, unusually high levels of..."
"Everything is carefully monitored doctor, we'll let you know if you are needed" Her voice was cold as steel - this, he knew, was her domain, he treatet them, but she ruled their every moment. And he also suspected that she was fiercly loyal to their crimson friends.
"Yes, thank you nurse"

He closed the panel over that he had been working on, the one regulating the drugs supply, and moved off toward hi offices.

The underground still hadn't got word back to him, but there were a few things he could take care of on his own. The Anteres woman was a problem, he should never have told her anything, in her barely cognisant state she was a liability. He couldn't afford to loose his cover, there were much bigger fish to fry. She had to be taken out of the picture.
******

She surfaced again for the millionth time, but on this occasion, she found she could keep her eyes open, she was even awake enough to turn a little, to try and ease her discomfort after being in one position so long. She turn to a funny squeaking sound, and almost laughed out loud to see Ghost, huge grin on her face as she leapt about on the matresses. None of the others had returned, and felt a moment of fear for them, but pushed it back in her mind and concentrated on the sheer joy of the little girl bouncing on the bed.

After a long while, a steady but insistent beeping fought its way through to her notice. She swung her head around to see corresponding lights flashing on her wall monitor. She began to panic. A hot wave went through her, followed by almost overwhelming nausea., her skin seamed alive with fire ants, and she fought to stop the room spinning. Shortly before she blacked out again, the bed started to lift, and she managed a wave to Ghost before she dissapeared.
*****

The doctor sighed and shook his head."I'm sorry, these things are unavoidable, theres no way to predict..."
"I'll tell you whats possible! What happened?" the Crimson Guardsmans face was almost the same colour as his uniform embellishments.

"It was a new drug she was given, she suffered an allergic reaction almost as soon as it was introduced into her supply. I noticed irregularities, changed her mix, and the new mix was wrong, there was nothing in her history or file to suggest an intolerence, We tried to counteract it, but to many of her organs had failed.

"You idiot! Imbecile! The guard stormed off, and he pitied the recipiant of his ire, it wasn't going to be pretty.

The doctor looked down at Seryn lying in the transport coffin. Tucking a strand of hair in, he removed the last of the tubes and heart monitor links and zipped the light tan coloured suit she had been dressed in up to the neck. he closed the lid, and completed the label giving instructions for disposal. Directing it to the crematorium, he smeared the writing a litte, and tried again. Happy that his paperwork was complete, he summoned the orderly to take the coffin away.

Its was a pity - the little girl would be left alone now, theres was no telling when or if the others would be back.

Oh well.

SAFEAT2ND

Lying on the bed with his eyes closed, Safe takes deep breaths to calm himself. The pain from the headache was making his heart race, and that, along with the drugs, were clouding his thoughts.

Opening his eyes, he looks straight at the camera, “HEY ANYONE THERE!! I really have to GO! You gonna leave me here to sit in my own sh....? C’mon, you have to take me to the head!”

At the monitoring station outside the room, a young orderly turns and looks up questioningly from the monitor at the Crimson Guard standing over his shoulder.

The Crimson Guard stares at the orderly in amazement. “You’ve got to be kidding me… that’s the oldest trick in the book. Besides, you’re an orderly” He spits the word at the young man, “You’re used to cleaning up that sort of thing, right?” It was more of a statement that left no room for a response, than a question.

The orderly turns sheepishly back to the monitor.

Seeing he wasn’t going to get a response, Safe closes his eyes once more, this time taking short shallow breaths, letting the pain from the headache fuel his racing heart.

His eyes snap open and he screams, throwing himself at his restraints. “LET ME OUT!!” Safe thrashes around as much as the straps will allow, drawing fresh blood at his wrists, biceps and ankles.

“YOU’VE GOTTA LET ME OUT!! I CAN’T TAKE BEING TIED UP!!” Safe screams, foam flying from his lips. “LETMEOUT LETMEOUT LETMEOUT!!”

The lights on the monitoring station start to flash. The orderly looks up at the Guard alarmed. “His heart rate has gone through the roof!!”

At that moment a Doctor rounds the corner “Good lord man! Why are you just sitting there? Sedate him!”

The Guard gives the doctor an annoyed look. “It’s a ruse, let him be. Besides, he’s coming down off the maximum sedation from his last “interview” and you know full well what happened to your last patient. We’re not about to lose another.”

“Well if you don’t calm him down somehow, you’ll lose him anyway when his heart explodes. It’s on your head, better make a decision…”

The doctor is interrupted by the orderly, “Doctor, his blood pressure is climbing!!”

“Make your decision now soldier…”

The Guard looks nervously back and forth between the Doctor and the view screen where he could see Safe continue to trash about.

“LET ME OUT!! I’ll tell you everything! I’ll cooperate! Just LET ME OUT!!” Safe didn’t know how much longer he could keep this up. The drugs were fighting to drag him back down and he was slowly losing that battle.

Trying to conserve what little energy he had left, Safe collapses just as the door opens and the orderly rushes in with the Guard following. The Doctor stays outside the room watching the monitor. He had noticed the heart rate and blood pressure dropping back to normal. ‘You sly fox!’ the Doctor thinks with a small smile as he reaches out and casually shuts off the monitor and walks away.

“Talk Franklin.” The Guard says from the foot of the bed as the orderly fusses about trying to repair the damaged intravenous tubes. “The Alliance is waiting for you when we’re done here. I don’t want to keep them waiting.”

“Loosen the straps. I can’t feel my hands.” Safe whispers hoarsely.

“What?” the guard says in surprise more than question.

“He said he wants the straps…” the orderly starts.

“I heard him.” The Guard snaps. He considers for a moment. The subject looks to have worn himself out and was willing to talk… “Alright, just one arm.”

Lying still while the orderly loosens the straps on his left arm, Safe motions the guard closer. The orderly steps aside his job done for now, to make room for the guard.

As the guard leans in Safe, using the blood from the cuts caused by the straps as grease, pulls his hand free, grabs the front of the guard shirt and head butts the surprised man in the face.

The guard staggers back, clutching his face and the orderly steps in to try and hold Safe’s arm down, only to catch Safe’s fist in the side of the head, knocking him out.

Using this time to his advantage, Safe quickly pulls his arm fully free and releases his other arm.

The enraged guard lunges at Safe, but Safe is waiting for him. The second punch puts out the guards lights.

Freeing his legs, Safe hops off the bed, wobbling a little, the blood loss and drugs were taking their toll. Stumbling over to the Guard, he takes the gun and keys, and staggers out the door, closing and locking it behind him.

In the monitoring station, he spots a tray with various medical implements on it. Throwing things aside, he finds what he hoped was there. A syringe of adrenaline, used, most likely to bring the patient around. Crouching down, the syringe almost slipping out of his bloody hands Safe, injects the adrenaline into his arm, pausing until he could feel it take effect. This had been common procedure for the Special Forces during the war, to give them an edge, so Safe was well versed in its use.

Standing, Safe flexes his arm to speed the adrenaline on its way and checks the clip on the gun. With one final attempt to close the back of his hospital gown he heads down the corridor. ‘Now to find the others’

OOC: Sorry for the three posts, the story wouldn't stop! I was inspired.

Wisp regained consciousness to find Lizzie reapplying the bandages on his chest. She Obviously hadnt been home since starting to treat him but she was still a very attractive woman.

"Hey sleeping beauty, Back to join us??"

"Hadnt planned to. I was having an amazing dream"

"Really??" She said questioningly as if he had already given a smutty reply.

"I hadnt had the fea su kicked out of me" She laughed causing her hands to pull the bandage around his chest a little tight. Wisp winced and she immediatley stopped laughing.

"Im SO sorry"

"No its my fault for being so damn funny" She smiled and finished dressing his wounds.

"So i dont actually know anything about you. Not even your name!!"

"Im Wisp" He said taking her hand and kissing it lightly "Im just a young man who got caught in a wild chain of events that left me here. Theres not much else to tell"

"Thats all i get??"

"I like to remain a man of mystery"

"Well mystery your blood bags empty so im gonna go run get you a new one. Will You be ok on your own??"

"Dont worry I wont run off"

She exited the room and ran up the basement stairs quickly in an excited trot. She told herself to calm down. He was eight years her junior and her patient, but she couldnt help it. It was that cheeky grin and sharp quips even though he was in such a state.

He was a true one of a kind and he made her heart flutter every time she saw him. She walked to the supply room in a half daze lost in her own thoughts and dreams. She didnt notice the man stood behind the door when she was finding Wisps blood type.

She did feel the scalpel blade touch her throat as another hand covered her mouth. She froze in fear.

"Do not scream or move and you wont be harmed" She whimpered an answer through the mans hand. The voice was deeo yet sophisticated and somehow familiar although she didnt activley recognise it.

"You are treating a young man in the basement. He is important. There is a package by on the bottom shelf of where you are standing. Ensure it is with him but do not tell him it is there untill the time comes"

"But.." It was too late. The man had dissapeared out of the room leaving no trace of his presence except for a biohazard bag containing Wisps personal belongings.

Doctor Sykes shoved his and in his pockets, whistled shrilly and, turning the monitor off, ambled happily off before the guard recovered from Safe's rather deftly handled sucker punch.

He had no idea where the others were, but it looked like they didn't need his help at any rate, not yet anyway.

Pausing at the turn of the corridor, he checked for signs of the nurses, coast clear, he went directly to the room containing the little girl and punched in the code to open the concealed emergency door.

As it opened he herd her sharp intake of breath, but it took him a moment to locate her - crouched in a far corner , staring at him wide eyed and attempting to hide the remains of the food behind herself.

"Hey..." he softened his voice as much as he was able, but figured it really didn't help - tall angular and craggy featured, he held no illusions about the his intimidating appearence. It made him a target for short angry men any way.

"hey, Ghost is it? You have to pick up whatever you have and come with me now"

She stered again, looking round for, he presumed, the others.

"Sweetie, i'm here to help you, to try and get you out of this place, but you have to come quickly..."

Ghost was very confused and scared.

She had been following the scary doctor expecting to be punished for eating the food and jumping on the bed.

Instead the man had mostly ignored her as he led her through the corridors. This place was scary. She wanted Shadow and Truth.

It had been a very long day (OOC: or is that few days ise not really sure) for the six year old, from hiking to the Carson home, to the frightening ride in the mule compartment, to her imprisonment. Most children would have broken down by now. Ghost was getting close.

She was worried about the adults who seemed to know her, she hadn’t seen them since the ceiling had taken them. She was also getting sleepy.

Ghost gave a big yawn as she tried to keep up with the man. She didn’t get very far before stumbling to the ground, her broken arm banging harshly on the ground as she landed, a small whimpering scream coming from her mouth.

Lizzie returned to the basement and found Wisp asleep again. She'd given him the best immune-boosters the hospital had and his wounds were healing nicely. In another few days he might be hobbling. She stashed the package underneath one of the tables just out of sight. As she was hiding it she caught her hand on a small piece of metal left sticking out. She yelped causing Wisp to wake.

"Wha, er" Wisp dragged himself up and wiped his eyes "You Okay??"

"Fine just caught my hand" She walked over to Wisp and he gently caressed her hand. A small trickle of blood fell out of the graze like a crimson river following the contours of her hand before flowing down her arm to the starched cotton shirt. Wisp gently kissed her scratch and mopped it with a small piece of bandage.

"Shouldn’t I be doctoring you??" Her voice crackled trying to hold in the sudden rush of emotion. In any other circumstance she would have kissed him passionately as if her very soul required his lips. She kept her feelings chastised within her though simply allowing her mind to redirect her erotic desires.

"You’ve done quite enough for me it’s my turn" His hand raised to her neck and she couldn’t contain herself any longer. Her Body ached for this moment and she leaned forward to kiss him. Their lips connected for a simple moment with enough electricity to light the entire town.

The door behind them banged open shattering the connection as they both recoiled. "Well Well what a heart warming scene ive disturbed" Stood in the doorway was the man from the crimson Squad. He didn’t miss a step from throwing the door open making a beeline for Lizzie. He grabbed her hair and threw her into the wall.

Another man walked in, this one also wore the suit with red stripe, he rolled Wisp over violently before pressing a button on the wall. The tables were drawn into the walls and a clear box roughly the size and shape of a coffin was lowered from the ceiling. Unceremoniously Wisp was lifted into the box and fastened to the bottom with fabric straps. The box had no lid but was connected to the roof through a series of chains. Another button was pressed and the box returned to the roof spinning in the process. From his new position he could see every detail of the room but was out of reach of any but the tallest person on the floor.

"Do we have your attention now Mr. Spacer???" The first man said angrily "your friend The Captain has told us it was all your idea. YOU HAVE WHAT WE WANT" The shout at the end was filled with frustration. His face was flushed and if the man had looked up Wisp would have seen a vein surging in his temple.

"We Have already established that harming you will bring us no information" This second mans voice was much calmer yet somehow more sinister. "So we have arranged a show for you

Two Feds brought in a man who was obviously unconscious. The man was naked and his body was filled with scars. Some deep and painful. His scalp was shaved but had been done close with a knife so patches of skin had been cut off leaving a bloody mess with bone visible in places. Through the mans shoulder was a piece of jagged metal like shrapnel, the wound was old though as his skin had grown around it. One of his hands was missing, replaced by a crude claw which looked badly attached. Around the mans neck was a metal collar, very new and out of place with his attire.

"This thing was captured after it killed thirty four people on an alliance vessel. It will change your mind" The men exited the room leaving Wisp chained to the ceiling. Lizzie was just coming round as the reaver opened his eyes.

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

OOC: Ooh, ooh ooh. Excellent stuff.
Now finally I\'ve got round to writing some more.

---

Robert Wu was a decent man.

Once a cop before a gunshot to the knee forced him into early retirement, he continued nevertheless to find work with various agencies, thanks to his negotiating skills.

It wasn’t that he was a particularly verbose man; neither did he have a special method he used. No, it was simply that for some reason people responded to him. They would open up and give him all the information he needed, and he’d be able to take that and use it - talking them out of taking a certain action.

When he was still an officer, he had actually walked into a hostage negotiation involving radical terrorist extremists and talked each and every one of the hostiles out of it. No one knows how he did it even now, not even the terrorists themselves.

Robert had what you might call, a gift. Not a normal one mind, but something paranormal he’d been born with. For him, anything was possible, which was why he was so valuable to agencies.

For this very reason, he had kept out of the Alliance’s way – he didn’t want them to use him for their own insidious means. But this was personal. He’d asked to be used, for one reason, and that reason was the man sitting before him today.

“You want the truth?” Mr Needham asked the pair. “Truth isn’t always the easiest thing to hear.”

Robert looked back at the man that stood behind him in the shadows – a shell of a man that rarely showed any emotions whatsoever.

“I’m obviously not the only one with secrets” the ex-cop thought to himself. Of course, for an Alliance officer to know more than he let on was nothing new. Nevertheless, he was still surprised when the conversation took a turn towards talk of wormholes and mysterious devices.

“Fine, but you might want to sit down for this. It’s a loooong interesting story” the prisoner continued.

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

There was a long gap of silence, before anyone spoke up.

“Tell us then” Robert insisted

“Just wanted to make sure you were all paying attention” Mr Needham continued, smiling to himself whilst his gaze to his right hand side seemed as if he was acknowledging someone that wasn’t there. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth proved to be formless and waste and there was darkness upon the surface of the watery deep; and God’s…”

“You have any idea what you’re doing?” the shadowed officer interrupted

“I believe he’s quoting scripture” Robert answered the man, whilst the prisoner continued on reciting words from the book of Genesis.

“And God proceeded to say: “Let light come to be.” Then there came to be light.”

“You’re playing a very dangerous game Mr Needham. Tell us what we need to know and you can get it all back, your life as it was. But you continue with this, and I swear you will wish you were never born.” The shadowy figure threatened him, whilst Robert kept his mouth shut.

“After that God saw that the light was good, and God brought about a division between the light and the darkness.”

“We might not be able to hurt you physically, but your friends… your family... everybody you’ve ever set your eyes upon… that’s another story

Needy stopped talking, and gazed intently into the eyes of his enemy.

“Either tell us what we need to know, or they will face the consequences for your actions”

“Mr Wu” Needy turned to the man seated opposite him. “Tell your friend that his threats are meaningless, he hasn’t the power to do what he says”

Robert was speechless. How does he know my name? He couldn’t recognize me, we never met before!

“Unfortunately for you, you are wrong.” The man offered “Not only do I have such power, but I can show you how easily I can use it”
Reaching into his inside pocket, the man pulls out a thin receiver, a cross between a mobile cortex and a microphone, only much more advanced and looking simply like a slim twelve-inch pen.
Holding it close to his mouth he utters “Show him. Bring in the girl”

Needy smiles whilst he waits for the man to display his “power”

When there is no response, the man repeats his instruction into the device.

Still, no response.

Robert sits quietly taking in the situation. Something feels wrong somehow. He can’t explain it. All he knows is that if there is one person in control of the situation, he has a feeling it’s the prisoner, and not them.

“You may think you have the power” Needy responds “but you are wrong.”

The shadowy figure looks up at the prisoner, light finally catching his face to reveal a bald scarred man, with a look of absolute frustration in his eyes

“You’ve got nothing but technology. And, as always, that always fails” Needy smirks again before winking at the man. Just then, the receiver the officer is holding surges with electricity. As blue sparks burst out, the man attempts to drop it, but it is too late – all the energy had already shot out and quickly jolts his hand, up his arm, electrocuting him there on the spot.

Robert swings around but is helpless to do anything. Before he can even think of telling their prisoner to stop, it is no use. The officer collapses in a burnt crisp heap on the floor.

“I like my officers well done. How about you?” Needy says deadpan.

Robert can only look on at him in fear. This wasn’t the man he knew about. What had he become?

The events that took place in that room were burned into His mind until the day he died. He tried to close his eyes but found them drugged open. He was forced to watch what it did to her for over four hours. She was dead for the last two but the beast didnt care. The things it did were too horrible to be described. Years later when Wisp devloped alzheimers at the age of 64 he relived the evnet daily. Doctors believed it to be hallucinations as the things he described were too horrible to imagine.

It haunted his dreams every night. Every time he closed his eyes he could see it violate her. He didnt lie with a woman for seven years after that day. And even then he vomited thouroughly after it. He changed his entire lifestyle as his own mind changed itself. He remembered how he could talk to women but was repulsed by the very thought of it.

He was a different person. After the reaver had reduced her to a bloody carcass, barely recognisable as a woman, The animal tried to tear Wisp from the celing but he was too high. It ran to the door and tried to get out. His claw hand had been torn from his wrist during his abomination and the stump bled profusley.

When the men from crimson squad decided that the thing would not degrade the woman anymore they triggered an explosive device round his neck killing it instantley. They then walked into the room unphased by the carnage that would make the hardiest human stomach wrench with fear and disgust.

"Still not talking???" The calm one said. Wisp mind had fallen into a catatonic state and didnt respond at all. Vomit hung from his mouth along with blood from his lungs as he had screamed so hard. His eyes were dry as there were no more tears within him.

"Very well. We have no further need of you" They pressed the button again and he fell from the roof to the floor. The men left him. He cradeled her body in his arms and sobbed dry bitter angry tears until his body was out of sorrow and pity. All that was left within him was burning revenge. He had seen Lizzie stow the package and now retrieved it. The pain corsing through his injuries was drowned by the pain in his soul. He put on the jacket and took his pistol blowing out the lock on the door. He had one thought on his mind.

Vengance.

SOULOFSERENITY

The Man They Call Soul...

OOC: Wisp, wow! That was an unexpected twist. Well done.

The corridor seemed to close in on him as he strode silently through the halls, following the map provided by the facilities security system. His conversation with Lieutenant Bayer still played over in his head, but all he could do was constantly wonder if he had made the right decision. The Cortex link he held in his hand still showed the picture of the man with the tattoo, but now it also showed a series of coordinates. No name, but at least now Soul had a starting place to search for the man who had killed Ciaran. He wondered if the tattooed man would even remember him. After all, Ciaran had been killed three years before Soul went into cryo, and since being released from his quarter-of-a-century icebox prison he had spent four more years trying to get his life back together. Now he finally had a lead.

Soul marched around a corner just in time to see a bullet emerge from a door lock and just barely miss his arm. He stopped in place and raised his gun as the door opened to reveal—

“Wisp,” Soul said.

The other man stared back at him, and in that instance Soul knew that he was no longer looking at the same man who he had traveled in the SereniTREE with. This Wisp’s eyes were harder, determined. Cold. To a degree, they almost mirrored Soul’s.

Wisp stepped aside, allowing Soul to look into the room, and what the ex-Expendable saw managed to churn his normally cast-iron stomach. He looked back at Wisp, and this time saw the rivulets of skin showing through the mask of blood and grime. Soul knew the remnants of tears when he saw them.

“We are kindred souls,” Soul began. Wisp opened up his mouth to argue that fact, but Soul held up his hand, the one with the Cortex link still in it. He stared for a moment at the picture of the tattoo before continuing. “There is a time for vengeance, and a time to right wrongs; but that time isn’t now. We have friends that need our help first.”

“This vengeance can’t wait,” Wisp spat.

Soul stared back at him, letting his eyes grow steely. “I’ve waited thirty-two years for revenge. I think you can wait.”

Wisp stared back at him for a moment. Then he nodded. They turned and headed down the hallway, and as they went, Soul couldn’t help but feel bad for anyone who crossed their path.

APRILISE

Truth sat on the roof of the Carson Home. It was the safest place to be when Mr. Carson was home, not that that was saying much. The Carson Home was falling apart. The roof leaked in multiple places and in all honesty he was constantly surprised that he didn’t fall through it.

Mr Carson wouldn’t pay to get it fixed and definitely wouldn’t fix it himself. If it leaked it leaked into the attic where he had the children sleep.

It was his favorite place to think though, especially in the middle of the night.

He wasn’t able to sleep, how could he sleep, Ghost was missing.

His baby sister, blood or not that’s what she was.

His baby sister was missing.

When Mr. Carson had seen them walking back from town, Truth had known they were in trouble. He sent Shadow to hide Ghost, while he took the punishment from Mr. Carson. When he had regained consciousness a few hours later, he found Shadow unconscious in the woods beside the hovercraft yard, dried blood and mud caked on her face and clothing.

Gently he checked her over, attempting to wipe some of the grime off her face as he did so, smiling to himself, despite his worry, as she whimpered slightly and opened her eyes.

When Shadow woke up she had told him she had hidden Ghost in one of the old hovercrafts, the one he had been fixing up in fact. She had been going to find a hiding spot of her own when Mrs. Carson had found her. She told him how she had been dragged into the woods when customers appeared headed towards the hovercraft shop. She had watched as a man dressed in a uniform walked up to Mr. and Mrs. Carson and rented the hovercraft Ghost had been hiding in.

She hadn’t gotten a good look at the man and couldn’t remember much about him. Once the man had left Mr. Carson had come into the woods.

They were just lucky neither were seriously injured.

Truth glanced up at the stars. He hoped Ghost was okay where ever she was. They were going to find her. He didn’t know how. Mr. Carson had locked them in the attic and had people guarding the house.

And the two of them were in no shape for a journey.

Tomorrow he would sneak into the hovercraft office.

He would find all the information he could on the man who rented the hovercraft, if there was any documentation at all.

Then he and Shadow would find them, would find their sister.

OOC: Yaay I finally got a section saying where Truth and Shadow are.

The corridors looked all the same as Wisp walked with Soul. His body burned, His spirit ached. The images of what had been done had merged and blurred and nothing was clear anymore. He blamed everyone but he blamed nobody. It was all done by the dead reaver but it was all caused by him.

If he hadnt have come, if he had lied to the men, if he had died in the river. She didnt have to die. If he had died it would have been fair and just. But she was innocent. She didnt have to die.

But now the crimson squad had to. If he ever saw a man in the suit with the crimson band he would tear him asunder.

Safe rounds a corner and nearly runs into the back of a guard with a crimson band on his sleeve. His bare feet almost lose purchase on the tile floor, as he stops abruptly.

Ducking quickly back around the corner, he leans against the wall, takes a deep breath, silently curses the creator of the open backed hospital gown, and peeks back around the corner. The guard continues on, apparently he hadn’t heard Safe.

Stepping softly back around the corner, Safe levels the gun at the back of the guards head, and pauses, reconsidering the idea. Switching his grip on the gun, he slips up behind the guard and knocks the guard unconscious with the handle of his gun.

Moving quickly, Safe drags the unconscious guard into an empty room. Inside the room, Safe switches clothes with the guard and ties him to the empty hospital bed. The uniform is a bit of a tight fit through the shoulders and a bit loose around the waist, but close enough to pass muster. Pulling the collar up to hide the tazer burns on his neck, Safe slips out into the corridor, pausing at the diagnostic center outside the room to get a location for the rooms where the others are being kept.

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

The alliance copter carrying the four fugitives landed at Tamhead Quarry a couple of hours after its departure from Helo. Far from any prying eyes hoping to learn of the location of the resistance’s base, the four figures stepped out.

The old mine had few visitors now, ever since the cave in twenty years prior. Many workers had died from the chemicals found in the mine back then, and even though the danger had been dealt with, still people refused to return.

Of course, the resistance had used this to their advantage, often meeting up in places such as this, the nearby rockery proving an excellent way to keep things hidden.

“This is it?” Milton asked the fighters that had rescued him

“Sorry?” Flechette responded, seemingly offended

“This is your base of operations?”

“No, of course not” Jack replied with a slight grin. “We prefer our bases much homier.”

Before Milton gets a chance to ask why they’d stopped there, Jack continues: “But we can hardly land the copter so glaringly in the open”

Milton looks around, seeing nothing else but stones and gravel. “This is the open!”

“Trust me, I know what I’m doing. Besides we got you out didn’t we? Come on” Jack instructs, leading the former companion around to a small mule, just big enough to seat four, partially hidden in an opening in the rockery.

“Home is not far away now” Jack tries to add comfort to the lost soul.

Milton feigns a smile, and as he boards with the others, he contemplates his next course of action.

Breaking him out of prison or not, these were not trustworthy people. Neither were the alliance. And what better way to get two enemies off your back than setting them against each other. As soon as he arrived at the location, he would set things in motion. For Needy, he told himself.

Following the directions he found on the computer, Safe arrives at the room where he and the others were originally kept and where Seryn and Ghost were until just recently. Taking the uniform had paid off. The few guards he had encountered on route hadn’t even given him a second glance.

Finding the room empty, Safe enters the control station across the hall. An orderly packing up paperwork and medical charts, looks up surprised.

Folding his hands behind his back and adopting an official tone and posture, Safe asks. “Where are the… patients?”

The orderly looks at him confused. “The woman is dead and the girl is in the room waiting questioning.”

Safes face drops ‘Dead? No! I’m late again…’ He thinks. Looking up he sees the orderly eyeing him suspiciously.

Drawing his gun and crossing the distance between them in two strides, Safe grabs the orderly by the throat, throws him up against the wall and jams the barrel of the gun in his cheek. “You’re lying. You lied about the girl being in the room, you must be lying, so I’m gonna ask one more time, where are the others.” Safe says in a quiet, dangerous voice.

“I saw the doctor close the body bag, and sign the certificate.” The orderly stammers. “You can check the charts.” He nods towards one of the boxes.

Safe’s shoulders sag in defeat. He lets go of the orderly and slumps into a chair, staring at the floor, not really seeing anything.

The orderly looks at Safe in shock, “You’re not of the guard, you’re one of…them.” He hisses rubbing his throat.

An alarm breaks the silence, startling the orderly, but Safe doesn’t seem to hear it. The sound of running boots fills the hallway.

“HA HA! HA HA! You hear that?!?” The orderly shouts with glee “They’re coming for you. You’re a dead man!!”

Safe’s gun rises, almost of its own accord, and barks. The orderly is thrown back against the wall and collapses to the floor. “Oh… Shut up.” Safe says, never lifting his gaze from the floor.

In his hands are the medical reports for his friends. A Dr. Sikes had some explaining to do...

As Soul and Wisp wandered through the halls they heard an alarm ring out in the difference. Soul stopped in a moments thought to assess the situation, but Wisp didnt break his gate. His pace quickened as he marched to the sound, His weapon in his hand.

Soul followed him reluctantly wondering if this new Wisp would become a liability. The pair rounded several corners before finding the centre of the alarm. There were a few guards running round the corner opposite them but Wisp dispatched them before they had even spotted him.

He entered the room And looked around. Along one side was a window showing the room where they had been kept which was now empty. Opposite it was a desk with a man stood behind it. The man wore a suit with a crimson stripe on the shoulder.

Wisps rage returned in full force and he lifted the weapon and emptied a full mag in automatic. The bullets would have annihalated the man if Soul hadnt Knocked Wisps weapon up as his finger gripped the trigger.

In the Epsilon, a small figure pads quietly across the deck and enters a tiny room. In one hand, it carries a cup. “Greetings, my pretties! And how are you this morning?”

On a shelf, the seven dirt-filled flower pots do not respond.

“Thirsty?” From the cup a portion of bright green viscous goo is poured into each pot. It is quickly absorbed into the dirt. “There, that should increase your growth rate by a factor of…”

Suddenly, a small sprout pushes its way out of the dirt in one pot. Then another. And another. Soon, each of the pots contains a plant. They all unfurl their leaves and sway back and forth. A tiny face can be discerned upon one young plant, blinking its eyes and looking about in confusion.

The figure smiles. “Oh, good! Much better! Here you go!” It flicks a switch, and the cramped room is bathed in bright light. “Eat! Grow! Become strong!”

The tiny plant people bend and strain to maneuver their leaves to catch all available light.

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

The blaring alarm startled Needy.

He found himself walking alone down the corridors, outside of his cell.

How he got out from the interrogation room was a question he had no answer to.

His memory was hazy, like he had woken up from a dream, and the harder he tried to remember, the further down the memory got pushed.

Unless this is all some twisted mind-game and in reality I’m sitting connected to a giant brain computer, it doesn’t matter. Forget how I got out! I just need to find the others. We all need to get out of here.

Needy’s clothes were clean and in good condition. If there was a physical struggle between him and the guards, there was no sign of one. From appearances, it looked as though he had just walked out of his cell.

“You there?” Needy asked

“Always”, the being replied.
“Good. Which way now? Where are my friends?”

As the being directed him to the location of the others, further back down the corridors, Robert Wu sat alone in silence… in shock.

Around him the walls were decorated in irony. The colour crimson splattered in patches, whilst below on the floor lay numerous bodies.

Robert Wu, the only survivor of the massacre he had just witnessed, could only remain still – as if his stationary position was all that was keeping him alive.
Even after the shadowy figure who had interrogated Needy was electrocuted; after the other guards that followed were slain in brutal fashion without so much as a touch; and after the one responsible had exited calmly and coolly, all Robert could do was remain, seated, glued to his seat. A look of absolute terror permanently etched on his face.

SERYN

Switching off the cortex screen he'd been studying intently, the morgue attendant sighed, figuring he'd better get on with what they were barely paying him to do.

He surveyed the line of dull grey coffins shoved haphazardly into various corners of the room.

"Now, ladies and gentlemen, i'f you'd all like to form and orderly que, we can get down to the business of burning you all into little bitty peices."

In one corner of the room, a tap dripped once, breaking the otherwise total silence.

"Nevermind, i'll do it my self" Rounding up the boxs, he began to check through the labels. Most of them, were straight forward cremations - they'd be burnt, the families would come pick up the ashes, or not, what ever. But one had the yellow and black markings on it. Straight into isolation with that one. In the morning a specialist team would come and pick it up and destroy it thoroughly - so that whatever nasty it contained couldn't spread. The one after that presented a problem - the writing was smudged and blurred and not particularly clear to begin with... "well, if in doubt..." He pushed it after the other one, and left them both in isolation, punching in the signal code for the disposal team to come take them away.
The rest were all simple, and he set to work preparing them for their cremations.

***

In the cockpit of the specialist air ambulences, a light beckan to flash.

"Dammit! and there i thought that we we're going to get the day free tomorrow."

A female guard leaned over the screen, "Its the Halo, only 10, 20 minutes flighttime, we could pick up now, burn them tomorrow and spend the rest of the day mooching?"

Her companion Hicks turned and grinned at her "Oh i've got much better plans for tomorrow than mooching Jude, yep, we'll pick up now."

Jude smiled to herself and logged the details into their records.

Landing outside the facility proved more problematic than usual - the guy monitoring airspace seemed distracted, and it took way too long for him to open the doors between the morgue facilities and its loading bay.

Reaching the isolation room, she scanned the labels for each coffin and stared at the second.
After a while Hicks followed her through.

"Its one of Sykes's."

Hicks looked at her gravely. "You know what almost happened the last time we took part in one of his little smuggling escapades. Its not worth it just for his research"

"But he asked us"

"yeah, and i'm asking you not to. Too much of a risk"

She looked at him, unlike Hick's she knew what Sykes was trying to achieve in the facility - if he thought a corpse might give him enough information to expose what was happening, then she didn't want to fail him.

Hicks gave up.

"Load them up. Toxic boy in the back, little miss mystery, you know where."

Shortly after they took off, she turned to Hicks "You did remember to scramble the monitoring devices in that room didn't you?"

Hicks grinned "Nope, but i replaced their feed with my fabulous renditions of as many crude ditties as i could fit in."

"Remind me why i work with you again?"

"Because i have the voice of an angel"

Hearing the gunfire and running get closer, Safe slowly stands. He examines the gun in his hand for a moment and slowly places it on the desk, folds his hands behind his back and waits for his end.

Two figures burst through the door and Safe closes his eyes. The hail of expected gunfire instead of ending him, only showers him in plaster. Safe snaps his eyes open in surprise.

Quote:

"WISP ITS SAFE STOP!!!"

“Soul?? Wisp?? But how…”

It was Souls turn to stare. Resignation and defeat were written all over the ex-soldier. His shoulders slumped and the steel in his eyes was gone. In fact, there was nothing in his eyes, just an uncharacteristic emptiness.

Worried where this new development was headed, Soul crosses the room quickly grabbing the front of Safe’s coat and slamming him against the wall of windows. “Snap out of it!! There are people relying on me and Wisp and even you, to get them out of here. I won’t let this road you are on, interfere with that. The blood will be on your hands… again.”

Soul lets the last bit sink in. He watches as the clouds clear from Safe’s eyes and they narrow in suspicion.

“Yes… I know your history. I can’t rightly tell you why, but I do.” Soul says softly, releasing Safe. “But that’s a story for another time; right now we have work to do.”

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

OOC: I\'m undead, I\'ll give it a shot

Earlier:

Kyra sat alone at the bar, taking drags from a cigarette with one hand, whilst the other held on tight to her glass of beer.
She rarely drank, and had never smoked.
She only drank alcohol at parties and the like, something used in celebrations. And as for cigarettes - well, she was not naive. She knew they would kill you, but had grown to like the smell as she breathed in second-hand smoke. Now tonight, after some random drunk offered to buy her a drink, she accepted and followed it up with taking the cigarette from his mouth and beginning to smoke it.

She knew it was stupid but at this point now she couldn\'t care less either way. It had been one of the worse days of her life. Worse than when her husband left. Worse than the day she ruined the life of the man she loved. Worse than anything else she could remember.
After a long search, she learnt that the man she was looking for was dead, and had been for weeks. She found that the man who worked with him had not only been unjustly imprisoned, but had later been kidnapped, presumably by members of the Resistance for their own insidious means. And she knew it was very likely that she was out of her job too.
She had no one left. Her family were long gone. Her friends, what few she had, she had driven away.
Now all she had was a death-stick, a drink of despair, and a lethal weapon hidden in her inside jacket pocket

How did it come to this?
She knew the answer... it was all because of one stupid decision she had made months ago. One lie, albeit a big one.
If I had just been upfront, none of this would have happened.
He would still be alive. My career might have been on a downer, sure, but I would have been the happiest woman alive.
One stupid mistake... thats all it takes to ruin everything.
Its amazing how one decision can influence multiple events.
One decision... one person... could change the Verse.
For better or for worse.

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

Earlier:

The mule pulled up into a small alley beside a block of buildings at Thordom Business Park
Even though the inclusion of the word park would make the area seem pretty, the truth was something far different. This part of the city was quite plainly a series of rows of old three-story buildings, used by various businesses - mostly the types of businesses that go under a year after being setup.

The design structure of the buildings were simple and boring - without a hint of any modernisation to make them look more appealing.
Then again, it was the work that went on in the buildings that counted, the ideas and inventions that were thought up by various minds.
Any money made went towards producing product, not glamourising the workplace.

It seems that the more important not to mention illegal work though was being done in the midst of it all.

At least one of the buildings was a base of operations for The Resistance - an underground movement that worked against the totalitarian regime of The Alliance.

Its purpose - to destabilise their rule and make sure that justice was being done.

Milton hopped off the mule as he followed his rescuers to what was presumably their current home.

Their leader, Jack, was the first to reach the main entrance and wasted no time in swiping his card through the security control, typing in a 4-digit passcode and opening the door.
Milton kicked himself when he missed which four digits were entered. No doubt he might need to know it in the future, if he is to succeed in causing the downfall of the organisation.

He followed the man and his two female colleagues, Flechette and Versa, through the main entrance, where he was confronted with a rather odd sight.
Inside the building, he didnt see stacked boxes containing stolen military weapons or various blueprints of government buildings watched over by bearded thugs and unsavoury characters - what he had assumed to see in a terrorist run organisation - but in fact a clean, sparsely occupied room where the centre piece was a large counter behind which sat a male receptionist. Above the counter, written in large letters on the wall, was the name of the so-called business:
