Hey All

For those of you who attend concerts on a regular basis, I was just curious if any of you have had any really cool concert-going experiences. Like what's the best concert you've ever been to, favorite moment in a concert, that kind of thing. I only ask because not only am I going to see The Rolling Stones live here in my hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan, but a month after that, I'll be going up to Toon Town (nickname for Saskatoon) to see The Dixie Chicks. I know that after The Stones, any band is going to pale in comparison, but this is the first time that I'm going to two major acts in one month. Usually it's one in two years or so, but I want to be a more regular concert-goer.

So far, the best concert-going experience I've had was seeing Great Big Sea live on Canada Day a year ago. It was a free concert in Wascana Park to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Saskatchewan, and I managed to get a good twenty yards from the stage. And if you've ever seen these guys, you know that they're stuff is the most lively, energetic music you've ever heard. They're like the maritime version of the Stones. And jumping up and down with thousands of people to their music was just the most amazing experience I had that summer. The next day, I got their live album and pretty much played it non-stop that summer.

So far this year, the most memorable concert moment I saw was when The Trews, when they played at Buffalo Days, halfway through one of their songs, changed gears and did a really good cover of "Gimmee Shelter". It was the most respectable Stones tribute I've seen so far this year. I saw Sam Roberts play at Buffalo Days a few years earlier, and it's really there where I began to appreciate him.

The earliest real concert experience I had was going to see Bob Dylan in Saskatoon with my dad. I gotta tell ya, Bob's older than Hell, a bit stiff and for the most part you can't understand a word he's saying, but he can still blow the roof of the house off. And just to say that you saw Bob Dylan in cocnert should be good enough.

It's weird, after seeing Great Big Sea live and listening to their live album, and also Green Day's "Bullet in a Bible", I'm actually starting to get more into live albums than regular albums. There's a contagious energy you get with live albums that you don't get with studio albums. Like the live version of Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" off the "Mirrorball" album is way better than the version you hear on the radio.

One live video clip that I love is U2's "40" when they played in Chicago last year. The song by itself from "War" is OK, but to hear thousands of people singing it, and see the members of the band one by one leave, so that all you hear is the crowd singing it, it's just exciting beyond words. I heard that one time where they did that, the crowd still kept singing it even when the band was gone and they were all going out to their cars. God, to have been there to see and hear it, it probably would have been tantamount to a holy experience.

So for those of you who go to concerts on a regular basis, what are some of the best concert going experinces you've ever had?

Best concert - the cure 2004

Best moment - I was at a Ramones concert when we started stage diving and crowd surfing. They had warned us ahead of time that it was not allowed{it was on concrete at a theme park}.Well, I got tossed up on stage next to Joey Ramone, he kept on singing like nothing ever happened, when I tried to jump over the security they got a hold of my ankles and pulled me back. They started to take me out when Joey Ramone stopped singing and told them to let me go back into the crowd or he wasn't going to continue...They let me back in. The crowd went bananas.

So many concerts that I have been to, moments that I remember from each...sure I can narrow it down to a few though...

Evanescence - Saw them in July of 03...Amy Lee is quite a prescence for such a tiny thing. The cover of "Zero" by Smashing Pumpkins was amazing, also, Ben Lee, throwing me his water bottle after the show, being as I was the only one in the tiny audience to recognize the Metallica riff he played.

Sevendust - Always an amazing show, a band I can see over and over again live.

Nonpoint - Debuting their cover of "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. I've never seen a metal crowd most to Phil Collins until that moment. After the show, getting to meet the band, and have them wish me luck in Basic Training was amazing too.

Nine Inch Nails - My all time favorite band...seeing them live, was completely amazing, I can't even describe the feeling!

Pearl Jam in 2002. They released that concert on CD, so I can relive it any time I want.

I can highly recommend the Austin City Limits Festival to anyone who loves a diverse mixture of music in an outdoor atmosphere.

This year's fest (#5) was held September 15-17 at Zilker Park in beautiful Austin and a few of the bands there were: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, Massive Attack, the Flaming Lips, Ween, Gnarls Barkley, John Mayer, The Raconteurs, The Shins, Ray LaMontagne, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Los Lonely Boys, Los Lobos, Matisyahu, Muse, Guster, Son Volt... the list goes on and on - 130 bands in all.

It is a great experience and even the Texas heat isn't so bad in September (October would be better)... I've been to 4 of the 5 concerts and each one just gets better - Austin is a fantastic music town - even if you can't get to the park - there are plenty of clubs with afterparties that last well into the morning.

If you ever have the chance to get down here - it is well worth the effort to go to ACL Fest.

I've been to soo many concerts over the years. But a few that stand out are :

Peter Gabriel 1993 the US tour at Madison Square Garden.I got to go backstage & meet him & Tony Levin.Very cool.

Any Marillion show because they so rarely play America.

Stevie Nicks -being in the front row & shaking her hand.At 2 different shows ! She's my all time favorite !

And I got to see Bruce Springsteen on the Born In The USA tour back in 1986.

Never had anything that stood out in a stadium sized concert. They always feel too....disconnected to me. Small venues are the ones that stand out to me.

Like standing at the back of the club while Sonic Youth were on stage and being told "If you run the light board for the rest of the set I'll give you a free tee shirt." Yep, ran lights for Sonic Youth. Said hi to Peter Buck from R.E.M. when I got the shirt. Ah, Athens....

Then seeing the seminal Scots group the Battlefield Band play in Atlanta. On the night of game 6 of the world series with the Braves. Only around 40 people showed up to a 1500 seat show, so we got what boiled down to a private performance.

I agree that smaller venues usually are better. Much more personal.
Sonic Youth, very cool.
I love R.E.M. -You Lucky person,you.
I have had the pleasure of seeing them.

I do love seeing shows at the Garden though. It's always very special.Pink Floyd was great there.
And Billy Joel out on the island is always an intimate experience no matter how big the crowd is.
I also saw his Millenium concert at the Garden.WOW!!!

I would have to go with DMB in Antioch TN, 2004 (I think). I had a great seat, about 7 rows back in the pit. About halfway through the show Vic Wooten and Jeff Coffin (of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones) came out and sat in for a few songs. I just wished Bela and Future Man were there as well. Oh, how I pine to hear those two bands doing "Sojourn of Arjuna" live...

I used to be in radio. DMB was playing in Athens a lot before they hit it big. Dave did 2 in studio performances for me, one with Boyd and one by himself. Just sitting there playing the guitar picking whatever songs he wanted to play while I was running the microphone levels....

Does a completely private performance alone in a room count as a favorite concert experience?
