What?

You sniffing things, LMD?

My favourite thing were the cardboard StormTroopers at D*C. Soo funny. I think I have a picture of them in my flickr account somewhere....

I had a pretty good day. My band played at a GermanFest at a church. They did a good job and we had lots of fun. And we got free food. I had egg noodles and cucumber salad and german potato salad (my grandmother's was way better) and strudel and pretzels and pickles and funnel cake.

We ate a lot. OH! And I bought boiled peanuts and forgot all about them! I should maybe go take them out of my bag and put them in the fridge, don't you think?

Boiled peanuts aren't german, they're southern. But they're still tasty.

well, when in england, English breakfasttea is drunk with milk and however much sugar you want (though more than two sugars get people exchanging significant looks over you head. or a lecture about your teeth if you are with old women.

which is a given, if there tea about, theres an old woman near by.

anything else, earl grey and similar and redbush, rooibos are a take it or leave it kind of tea.

Green herbal and chinese teas don't have milk, unless you are very strange.

But one thing i did notice is that normal breakfast tea is very thin on the ground, you had all the spiced teas, but no basic, and looking on that site where a box of 80 bags is 3 or 4 pounds, i'm not surprised.

Having no idea why I'm posting this, other than it kinda resonates with me, somehow.

Quote:

...has our society become too mercantile and consumerist?

A: I think it has. Let me give you an example. A while ago, I had a cold. When you have a cold you don't want to mess around. You want to go to the drug store, get your medicine, then stumble home and fall into a half sleep where you keep dreaming about going to the drug store to get cold medicine....

Anyway, there I stood in the store, along with all the other sick people, looking at the cold remedies. And there were a hundred different kinds, in a million different sizes, with dozens of active ingredients -- all sporting made-up corporate names that sounded like they might possibly be enemies of Superman.

When faced with such a bewilderingly wide selection of choices, how can you make a decision? Especially when you're sick?

Now, in a less consumerist system, you wouldn't have so many unnecessary choices. You'd probably just head down to the medicine woman at the edge of town for a holistic cure. She'd tie some garlic around your neck and hit you over the head with a log and then you'd stumble home and fall into a half sleep where you'd dream about heading down to the medicine woman at the edge of town for a holistic cure....

So this person (who was it by the way?) would rather have no choice and the wrong treatment than have to make a decision for themselves? That's a little weird.

Oddly enough, I tend to agree with you. My preference is to avoid the meds, which I feel may well mask the symptoms, but at the same time extend the recovery. Better to suffer and blow, such that the illness passes quicker.

But then a certain someone introduced me to Night Nurse, and the resultant sleep that ensued on account of that drug. What, I wonder, was her motivation?

It sounds terribly like a strawman argument against anything other than capitalism to me.

Sort of: "Look either it's Capitalism or be hit on the head with a log" kind of thing.

Besides everyone knows when you're ill you just buy the most expensive one. None of them actually work but the placebo effect is stronger because it must work better because it's more expensive, see.

Cozen did of course leave off the very best bit:
Quote:

Anyway, my point is this: I've become so upset about the rampant greed and consumerism destroying our society that I've decided to write a book about it and sell a million copies.
...
Q: Paul, did you have sex with Monica Lewinsky?

A: I think it's important to differentiate between actually having sex with a person and just being a performer with them in a live sex show.

It's a logical fallacy:
Quote:

A straw man argument is a logical fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position. To "set up a straw man" or "set up a straw-man argument" is to create a position that is easy to refute, then attribute that position to the opponent. A straw-man argument can be a successful rhetorical technique (that is, it may succeed in persuading people) but it is in fact misleading, because the opponent's actual argument has not been refuted.

Its name is derived from the practice of using straw men in combat training. In such training, a scarecrow is made in the image of the enemy with the single intent of attacking it. [1] It is occasionally called a straw dog fallacy [2] or a scarecrow argument.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man_argument

EDIT:
Quote:

But he seemed to be on the side of anything other than capitalism!
Therein lies the rub. "I hate the commercialisation of Capitalism!" He says "I prefer to be hit over the head with a log which is the only alternative!".

So is this indicative of what non-capitalists believe? is the situation merely a choice between glorious personal choice with the slight inconvenience of commercialisation or no choice but to be hit over the head with a log?

cool.

I understand now.

See, before that, i'd only seen straw men used in the context of a group of excessively rich types with a belief that 'civilistation' is a disease and hate most humans the same way Hitler hated the jews, and therefore spend large amounts of time capturing torturing and killing them in nasty ways.

the mere possibility that there might exist a straw man outside of fiction was a little alarming.

but no, i get you, cheers for letting me get on with my day with out fear of them.
