We are the few, the proud, the crazy people who actually choose to live in Minnesota where the temperature goes down to 40 below, and the snow goes up to there. I like to call us the Frozen Chozen.

So if you're living somewhere in Minnesota, let us know. Maybe when the weather gets a little less ridiculous we can get together for a little Shindig. If you used to live here and long for the frozen tundra - speak up!! Once a Minnesotan, always a Minnesotan.

Shiny!!!

We actually have a few more than 4. My husband and I have made a few converts among our friends and we're working on the rest. And my sister-in-law is a definate Browncoat. (Although she's in ND right now at college, she'll be back in the summer.) And she's working on a number of converts herself.

Super Shiny!

I met another Minnesota Browncoat just today - Miloradell. She works in Hopkins, lives in Shakopee.

One of my co-workers is one of those young guys who normally wouldn't put a coat on to save his soul in the winter time. Today not only is he wearing a windbreaker AND gloves, he actually went out to start his car and let it warm up before he left!

That's cold!

Hee Hee! I pity you fools.

One of the perks of being a stay at home mom is that most errands aren't so important that they can't be put off until it's warmer.

And the hubby can always bring home more milk and bread.

So, who is the fourth Minnesotan?

The fourth is a friend of mine - RoansRUs, also known as Lea. She was my first convert, and bought the DVD set. She and I have been watching westers and sci-fi together since high school, but with being busy on the horse farm, she doesn't have a lot of time to hang out here anymore. I'm sure she'd venture off the place for a shindig though.

Woohoo!! I closed our office early today because of the snow - I can't remember the last time we got so much in so little time! I think I was in college...

My husband is also a Firefly fan, though getting him to sit down and actually watch any of the episodes is a challenge. He's still at work, which is why I'm actually able to use the home computer today! Ha ha ha - mine is an evil laugh! And I know my brother would be a fan, if only his DVD player wasn't broke. And my brother-in-law and father-in-law would totally be into it, if I would actually trust them enough to borrow them my DVD's. But they're just going to have to wait for their b-days! Maybe they should sell Firefly in a 6-pack...

The Halloween storm of 1987 comes to mind, only this is a much finer amount, rather than the big honkin' flakes we got that night. I just used the snow-blower for the second time today because we were gone over the weekend - first time I've done that since we got it. Plus there's two minivans off the driveway. One had at least a foot of snow piled on.

Now THERE's an idea!! One of the browncoats has been using the drug dealer method: Give them a little, get them hooked, get them coming back for more. That means he loans one disc at a time. I may have to try that myself. I can't seem to bring myself to part with the entire set, but I think I could do one disc at a time.

1987 - yes! The big ol' Halloween blizzard! I have pics of pumpkins on the front steps with a foot of snow on top of them . That's right - I was in high school then. Jeesh! Has it really been so long?

Interesting little factoid I picked up yesterday at alternet.org - it was an article about global warming, and it said that the swing into a full-blown ice age only takes 1-3 years, as opposed to the decades previously believed. Apparently, there is no gradual lead-up to an ice age - open the door one morning, and bam! it's there. I'm a real fan of post-acopolypse fiction, but I'd never thought of it coming as the result of an ice age. Hmmm.......

If anyone's interested, here's the article:

Maybe that's what happened to earth-that-was.

I blame my Dad for the snow. He flew through MSP last week on business. During his layover, he called to give me a hard time about our "lack of snow." As he put it, he could "still see small trees." So, it's all his fault. (Which means so is the cold I got from shoveling.)

I blame my cousin. She went to Jamaica on a mission trip with her sister-in-law. I saw the old suitcase loaded with toys and such for the kids (we had to duct-tape it shut as the latches were problematic), so I know it's a mission trip. but while pushing 8-12 inches off their respective vans, I found myself thinking "Mission trip...Jamaica...RIGHT."

She's going to bring me back a bag of Blue Mountain coffee. I hope she brings back some of the weather too.

St. Paul and her suburbs are full of browncoats. Heck, we're working with city hall to get the name of West 7th changed to "Captain Tight Pants Avenue". :)

I bought an extra DVD set just for loaning/converting duty.

I'd love to have a Browncoat weekend. Let me know if someone else in the Cities would like to coordinate and we can exchange phone/emails in private :)

We'll have to watch out for that. As long as it isn't over Valentine's Day. I have to go back and help out at the flower shop that I used to work at before the kids came along. It's a real pain to double bag everything to protect it from subzero temps. But at least I don't have to do the deliveries... that really sucks at this time of year.

Mmmmmm - has anyone ever noticed how good flower shops smell in the winter? There's something about walking out of a blizzard into a mini-tropical zone.

Ever wonder where they got the flowers in Trash?

Not to mention where did they film it? Now there's a job - going out and scouting sites for location shoots. There was an article in Cult TV, I believe, interviewing the woman who does that for Stargate SG-1.

And how many times now have I seen places in other shows that remind me of the location shoots for Firefly? Oh, once or twice.

I like to go to Bachman's because of that fresh-flower smell too. It kind of takes the edge off of winter.

'ello fellow Minnesotans (or former Minnesotans...you can leave the state, but the state never leaves you! Hence "the ice pack" group out in Hollywood!).

I'm in St Paul...working hard to convert more Minnesotans (and friends anywhere else in the world).

I bought dvds for a couple of friends (both of whom love the show now and are taking it with them on trips to convert more). Have talked quite a few into purchasing dvds themselves. And have 2 spare sets that I've got loaned out with a waiting list. Mwahh haa haa, mine is an evil laugh...

SO hopefully a few will drop in here as well.

I'd be up for a gathering. We had a bit of one last friday (from folks on the official board). Always up to talking Firefly & getting to know folk.

Me I've got DVD's for two freinds into sci-fi. Not much but they influence others who will help spread the word. Anyway just so everyone knows I haven't lived in Minnesota since I was one and a half years old. But I still have a love for the state I visited for the first time in my adult life in 1993. You folks in St.Paul have a great skyline and I was really impressed by your skyway system all these tall buildings linked together by a system of walkways. In fact no city on earth as far as I know has so many(or any for that matter) tall buildings linked together by walkways.

I also noticed how fancy the lobies of your major buildings were fountains, gold looking plateing, fancy tile floors. Trust me I've lived in Boston for three years working in tall buildings, been a visitor to a few tall buildings in New York City and the interiors of Twin City buildings are unique.

You know during my first adult trip I asked many store owners for postcards and they had none? Never found any either, guess it's not a tourist city. Well it should be if people from else where had heard of something as impressive as the skyway system that links the tall buildings of St.Paul it might be.

Now for a fun fact what do the Twin Cities and Boston Mass. have in common? Give up? it's the T symbol of mass-transit,it's identical to Boston's except in Boston it's purple and in the twin cities it's red, other than that it's the same.

And I'm proud to be born in a state that elected a non-republicrat govener, good for you no other state in recent memory has managed that trick.

Anyway I hope to visit Minnesota soon it's alot of fun. And yes Stockton CA is in Northern California just 70 miles south of Sacremento.

Surely you mean the Minneapolis skyline, right?

Funny little factoid - those who live in Minneapolis are mortally terrified of driving in St. Paul, and those who live in St. Paul think that driving in Minneapolis is insane. My sister describes it thus:

Picture two fishing nets spread out on a sandy beach. The Minneapolis net is nicely spread out, all connected and neat, with maybe a few holes here and there. Now go to the St. Paul net, pick it up in the middle and drop it. Now the threads are a complete jumble - starting here, ending there, connecting WAY over there. That's because St. Paul was first and their streets are a combination of the original wagon ruts with an attempt to provide modern transportation. Minneapolis came after, and so a little more thought was allowed. Why they decided to put in so many one-ways, though - who knows!

We do have an intricate web of skyways. In Minneapolis you can walk from the central core of downtown all the way down to the convention center on the south side - 10 city blocks - all indoors. And let me tell you, that is a LIFE SAVER in the dreaded winter time when the wind tunnel effect can knock you right off your feet or tear the skin off your face. Doesn't save you from freezing to death at the bus stop, but at least you can stay warm getting there. In the summer, it's a great way to avoid the walk/don't walk signs when you're running late for the bus.

I must reply in correction of the fishing net analogy and explain the two cities.

They are called the "Twin Cities". Yes, they are that, but it is a very disfunctional family. St. Paul is the older, classier and prettier sister. Minneapolis is the younger, flashier and slightly trashier city.

Both are pretty and both are fun dates but only the older sister could be taken back home to Mama.

Minneapolis, The City of Lakes, celebrates the short, furious summer with their Aquatennial.

What you have in Minneapolis is a fishing net of interlinked squares ... unfortunately, they're all one-way streets and they've given each one a name. To further complicate things, they've given each one a name that they've already given to another ... in fact, 2 or 3 others.

You can find yourself on the intersection of 1st and 3rd. So can three other fish. Are you on 1st Avenue or 1st Street? North, South, East West?

Top that off with rows and rows of bland glass and steel high-rises each possessing a complete lack of personality and style ... sheesh!

Minneapolis kept almost nothing of it's past. All of its old buildings were torn down to make way for the new. When they couldn't get permission to tear it down, "transients" mysteriously started fires which burned the questionable property to the ground.

The two exceptions being the Foshay Tower, a 25-floor white obelisque now buried in a canyon of glass and steel and The Target Corporation tower. It is a newer building which actually had someone interested in design work on it. It is topped with a 2-story light display that constantly changes color, it too is overshadowed by taller blander buildings)

I enjoy Mpls, but it doesn't hold a candle to St. Paul which celebrates Minnesota's true season, Winter. The Winter Carnival is the oldest public celebration in the United States. This is the 118th year. Enjoy our Ice Palace when you watch the NHL All-Star game this Sunday.

St. Paul is an interesting blend of curvy streets and a few well-placed landmarks that you cannot miss. They kept the old. Restored it and reuse it. We've added new into the mix. It's reassuring being able to look up from anywhere and see a very distinct building, be it the Landmark Center with it's green castle tower roof, or the Cathedral of St. Paul up on the hill with a dome that matches that of St. Peters in Rome. The Capital building's white marble and gold statues ... you always know EXACTLY where you are.

As for the skyways, St. Paul had the first one and you can still see it 9-floors off the ground connecting two buildings.

Minneapolis has the larger of the two systems.

Cleveland has a skyway system which connects all the hospitals in the Cleveland Clinic complex. Unfortunately, the neighborhood around the Cleveland Clinic has deteriorated in the past 70 years and now one of the finest hospitals in the world is in the middle of one of the worst slums imaginable.

The Cleveland Clinic skyway system is designed to keep patients, staff and visitors safe from murder and mayhem as they pass from one building to another.

Come visit us again.

and thus, the rivalry has commenced.

Seriously, I like St. Paul's strong sense of history and the museums over there are AWESOME. Sadly, however, having spent most of my adult life on the Minneapolis side, I have not had the chance to truly appreciate the distinct flavor that St. Paul offers. I am also sadly inadequate to the task of finding my way around St. Paul, as my creative skills do extend to my internal GPS system. I've often spent a ridiculous amount of time going around corners, trying to find my way back to the freeway that will return me to Minneapolis where I belong.

On the other hand, I have a friend who says you haven't been anywhere unless you've turned around at least once.

BTW, there's a Scottish Ramble happening in Landmark Center February 14-15. I'll probably be there.

Frankly, I'm the only Scot you'll meet who believes haggis *shudder* is completely unnecessary. It was invented because there was nothing else to eat, and now because nobody remembers that, it's a ruttin' tradition? please.

Lunch at the Woodfire Grill would be shiny! And since I know a browncoat will be in the vicinity, I'll be wearing my brown suede jacket. Sadly, I do not have a Jayne hat. Talked to my sister about it, but nothing's come of it yet.

The skyway I remember walking was in Saint Paul. You people just don't get it do you no matter who has the most skyways Saint Paul or Minneapolis normal cities don't have any skyways any time ever.

You guys have lobbies of golden animals spiting water into fountains thats normal for you, thats not normal any place else, ever, for any reason. Normal places have grey carpeting in the lobby and you have to show I.D. to the front desk to get past security. Now thats normal no golden animals spitting water in to pools.

You see the sad thing is you think what goes on in the Twin Cities is normal. Well I'm here to tell you it's freakish. That does not go on in Chicago,Boston,New York City,or San Fransico. Thats normal in the Twin Cities just the Twin Cities and no where else.

Anyway you guys should capitalize on what you got. Anyway I'm proud to be from a place that spends that kind of time on it's interior spaces. I figure it's so cold most of the time you make the interior of places like skyscrapers ultra-nice since you have to spend so much time inside.

Now I've more than likely offened Minnesota folk but I'm just trying to say what you have is different you should tell the world and for crying out loud make some postcards!

Oh good - another sensible Scot. Then again, the Scots have been sensible enough to take back our country as coersively as we can. So long as we can stop arguing about the how-tos long enough to get it done

I'm Ferguson, myself. Chances are pretty good I can be found at the Minnesota Coalition of Scottish Clans table, drinking an Iron Brew.

I make shortbread cookies that would make my grandmother cry - now THAT was a bright idea. A cookie that takes only 3 ingredients. Scottish frugalness at it's finest. Mine's made with brown sugar instead of white. I've been told by the MCSC that when the potluck list comes out for our quarterly meetings that wherever my name falls, I'm to bring shortbread or *else*

If you mean the MCSC, yup, it's Minnesota only, not an off shoot of a national organization. The charter goal was to bring representatives from all the clans in Minnesota together in one place in order to create a strong Scottish presence. Several members were instrumental in developing the Minnesota Tartan and they're also involved in planning the new Minnesota Scottish Fair to replace the MacAlester Scottish Country Fair. Clann Tartan holds an associate membership with the MCSC. I'm a Fest Playtron, but also helped out at the MCSC tent on Highland Fling weekend.

The Ramble is fairly new, I think. Yet another opportunity to hear bagpipe music, buy an Iron Brew (kind of like gingerale with a bite) and see men in kilts.

Good Grief! You spend the day shoveling and the whole thread gets away from you.

Sorry, Knibblet, but I have to agree with Channain on the street controversy. Being from the Minneapolis side, I fully admit to not having a clue how to get anywhere in St. Paul. I've done the delivery thing all over town and I had to use my map book a heck of a lot more on the St. Paul streets. Everything over here is nicely blocked out and alphabetical. Much easier.

As for the buildings, I think we both have it made. The downtowns are both a picturesque sight to see. We really do need more post cards.

I may not have any Scot in me, but my husband and I make it to the Renn Fest every year. Usually in costume, but this last year we had to pass due to the extremely hot weather. (Being 6 months pregnant and in a hot corset and thick material just doesn't cut it.) We even had the pleasure of attending a Dew Drop wedding. The yellow Dew Drop Juggler (Mick) married one of my husband's coworkers. Hanging with him is always interesting. (The man takes a yo-yo with him everywhere. Amazing stuff.)

So in closing, may we revel in our similarities and celebrate our differences! It's always good to be Minnesotan!

Hey, did any of you Minnesotans go to the NHL All-Star weekend? I was watching the Hockey Night In Canada telecast and it had some great shots of the ice castle that's built in St. Paul!

Is it really made completely out of ice? -shiny

Being from west central MN, I'm not quite the "puckhead" that I probably should be. We didn't even have a high school team where I grew up.

Yup, the ice palace was made entirely of ice blocks. The don't get to do it very often due to the enormous cost - and the last one (1987, I believe?) was prettier, in my opinion, but it was nice to see one go up again. There's also ice sculpting competitions, and those are gorgeous.

Minnesota is definitely getting listed on the list of places I must visit!

Ooh, thank you so much, Knibblet and Channain. Photos are much appreciated. I'm remembering now how much *fun* it was waking up in the morning and unburying the car. But still...Home.

Source for all things Cadian. Really? I'm blushing.

Minnesota really does have the coolest people. I am going to come back one day. I mean, y'all have the Mall of America. I'm ruined for any other.

So I just got back into town yesterday, after having spent the week in Las Vegas. I hate that city! I'm allergic to the water - have you ever heard of such a thing?? I broke out in little red bumps all over my body. Shiny! Yeah...right. Hoover Dam and Boulder City were nice, though.

I've noticed that no matter where I go - and I've done some pretty extensive travel - I'm always the happiest when coming home!

I like the snow and I like the cold - kills all the bad stuff!

Hey all,

As someone who has spent all but the last 3 years of her life in Minnesota, I'm always tickled at how proud we all are of where we come from. My fiance was converted to MN pride when we lived there, and whenever I try to tell other people about how great it is, he always says "shh! don't tell anyone! It's OUR secret!"

This thread also made me think of something someone said to me right after I moved to Chicago: "Oh, you're from Minnesota? So when are you moving back?" To which I replied "what?" And she said "well, that's the thing about Minnesotans. You all move away for a while, but you all move back eventually."

Hey! It's snowing here!

Probably 'cause I moved up to north Louisiana. All the way from south Louisiana.

I'm standing outside in a jacket and houseslippers!

Real snow!
*does a little ice dance*
