Thanks Tristan.

Trist, those costumes are so well done! I have to say when I saw that 2nd pic... *fans self* I love the Renn. Fests! Have I said that before?

RIMG, you should SO dress as Jayne! I would love to see that. I really wanna dress as Kaylee and go to one of the Cons, but they are never anywhere near where I am and I am so very broke, lol! I'll have to see if some day I can make a special trip.

I do have a few more somewhere, but most got lost last month during the "move". I had a bunch on another computer, and as soon as I can get the harddrive out of it, I'll have more to post.

Gladiator, thank you! I am quite proud of that suit, too. It was heavy as hell, but surprisingly well-balanced.

Glad you're proud, it's a blinding piece! You were saying about it being balanced and all - I remember when we started studying the Roman period in college, the segmentata was an amazing piece of technology, so ahead of it's time. Everything about the Roman war machine really blows my mind. They really had amazing civilisation. Obviously being raised in Colchester (first Roman capital of England) I've always been fascinated by them. Also, for those who care and are unaware (hey, that rhymed!), last year archaeologists discovered the largest circus outside of Rome in Colchester. Really is amazing. Sorry bout my ramblings, all!

Gladiator, I built that armor using a pattern taken from the Corbridge digs. I contacted the Legio XX, and they were nice enough to send me detailed patterns for construction. I have not attempted another, but I may have to...they're just too much fun!
I'll be keeping my eye out for reports on that circus, too. Be curious to see what they find!

Well, I would love to see more if and when you can find them. I love all the garb, but am espcially facinated by all the armor. I always liked going over and watching some of the men and women in the booths at the Faires putting together chainmail. I even have a few jewelry pieces made of it. The Renn. Fests always hold a special place in my heart. Parents brought me there when I was very small and it was also my hubby and mine's 1st date.

PR, awww, look at you all snuggled up. I wanna watch Firefly with you!

I got Renn. Fest. inspired. Thank Trist for that. These two were taken a few years ago of one of the comedy shows there. They make the sword fighting look so effortless...

And I saw this driving this weekend and it was so beautiful I just had to share. Sorry for the quality, it was taken with my cell.

Roxy, I'll go ahead and post pictures of the most recent suit of armor I built...unfortunately, the ex now has it...that's who's wearing it in the photos. It would not have done me any good, because it was made to fit her....

Oh, and the sword-fighting shows is what we used to do! And I was the choreographer (among many other job titles...three of us did everything!)...so I'll see if there are some fighting pictures in there somewhere...

Long as we're doing the "period" pictures... follow me in this tale of an epic battle. With porta-jons in the background.

I'm the forth guy in blue from the left, with the shaved head. This is where I began during the battle.

After some people died, I made my way near the front. Here I am hiding behind Roman shields, because as a Japanese character, I don't use shields myself. Again, I'm the bald one.

Finally, I made it up front. This picture's taken from the opposite side, which is why I appear to be fighting in the other direction. Dodging arrows and deflecting everything that came at me, I actually held the vanguard, without a shield, until...

Our side pushed the enemy all the way back, and I got a little too ballsy. Here I am walking away from the battle, dead, and mostly exhausted.

Also, just because he's cool, this is Ogre "Make-Hole" Wolfcaller. He's HUGE.

Let my spirit rise, Valkyries carry me.

Tristan- thanks I love that dress. Lost the 70 pounds from everywhere except my bust ( this is because the bust gods hate me!!)

CMH- yeah from what I've seen, battle reinactments tend to be a n excuse to dress up, get drunk and run around wildly wavin swords. I seriously doubt most of them have the vaguest idea about actual battle strategy and tactics:) However thanks for solving the master of disguise thing ( must say you should teach this as a class for the CIA since you're amazingly good at it!!)

CMH...yeah, I remember those days...I did enjoy that part of it. The drinking and carousing afterwards were one of the high points!
Tactics? Oh, my group had the greatest tactics in the history of armored combat! We'd line up, have a strong, tight shield wall with the spears and glaives behind, and face the enemy across the field. The moment they hit us, we became a giant amoeba....I think we killed as many of our own people as that of the other side...
No, tactics and that never really worked that well, except in cases of gateway battles (Dauphin Island fort) and forest skirmishes. Lots of fun...I may have to see if I have any of me dressed in fighting armor...

Dayve...wow...that was a bad day pic!

MSG, no, the bust god loves you! This has been proven by the glorious bust-age you have been blessed with!

Yeah man, I really wish people would put a little bit more in to the competitive stuff. I'm cool with going in and just fighting without concern for winning (I'm a Celt now, so that suits me), but I've tried to make more organized and disciplined units in the past and man, no one goes for it. I thought there'd be at least a few like minded people out there, but there just doesn't seem to be.

The two big teams in the game I play are the Romans and the Gestiguiste. They both got the numbers and equipment, and the Romans especially pride themselves on "tactics", but neither one of em actually knows what the hell they're doing. Some A-hole uses the word "flanking" and all of a sudden he thinks he's talking big strategy... I dunno, I get a little too bent out of shape about this I guess. But that stuff is my craft, I just hate seeing people do it such great injustice, then brag about it like they've done a good job.

CMH, that was my persona...a Celt. Does not play well with others and is usually the first to die! We did manage to get small group tactics (4-5 people) down to an art form, and we were sometimes the only ones left standing on the field...except when there were archers...I grew to hate them! (in a good way, though )
I agree with you on the tactics thing. But, remember these words "No battle plan survives contact with the enemy", and these words are especially true to those of us with little military training!
I'll definitely have to find my fighting pics now...

Because, sadly, they don't know any better. They equate strategy to football or some other sport and don't really understand the long term strategy and tactics that go into an actual battle/war. Be nice, they don't know any better...or educated them. Explain tactics and give them some historic battle examples ( personal fav is the Battle of Moscow during the Napoleonic Wars.)

isn't the strategy just poetic?? It's almost lyrical in it's simplicity and yet it's total lack of effectiveness. Plus it proves the point made so clearly by the Princess Bride "Never get involved in a land war in Asia" ( I assume he means continent and not country)

"Did he just go crazy and fall asleep?"

StinkingRose - Gosh, it seems like such a long time since our paths have crossed. It's good to know you're still with us. Here's a shiny spittoon for you to catch all that...drewwwl.

Hell's Kitten - So as the rest of us waste away our time off work sleeping, watching TV, sleeping in front of the TV, doing meaningless yet nevertheless important errands, you enter a 3D scrapbook you call a closet (shades of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe?) and take a full-fledged journey down memory lane in the manner of Somewhere in Time! Kudos. Entertainment can be free.

But a word about the wardrobe. There are different levels of textile devotion but I'm seeing something here that puts you in a rarified stratum indeed.

There are those who judge clothing by its comfort. There are those that mind their appearance just enough to fit in, to "pass". There are those who live to buy their next outfit and are supremely conscious of the "ensemble"; models and fashionistas and clothes horses. Imelda MsG and my wife Toni (as in trendy and tony) belong here (from what I can tell, not that there's anything wrong with that...). Then there are the Tristans of the world (and thank God for ye, laddy) that love the design and crafting of fashionable, if anachronistic, attire and accoutrements. And then there's you. I thought the Firefly ensembles were because of your love of the show, which they no doubt were. But here we see one who acquires articles of clothing as a collector gathers grand works into his trove.

So, did your Mother ever get frightened by Rumpelstiltskin while you were in the womb or what?

Thank you for the compliment on the armor. You know, I should make you some pieces...you would be a phenomenal model/photographer for stuff like that...just wish you lived closer.

Thank you, StinkingRose!

JQ, I have never had anyone thank god for me...so thank you for that!
I also agree with your assessment of HK. And am very happy we are lucky enough to have her share with us.

Ok, I scanned my computer and only found a few of Tristan in armor. The first one is my brother and I somewhere in the neighborhood of ten years ago.
It's a digital photo of a hard-copy picture, so it's not that great.

These next two are what I used to fight in long, long ago...leather upper and an armored kilt.

I have more...mostly costume pics....I'll post them when I get them arranged properly.

...told y'all you were going to get tired....

This is the first "full" suit of armor I made. It is nowhere near as shiny or 'cool' as the one above.

This is the "Celts on the Rocks" shot from the 2nd or 3rd Ren Faire we did. Yes, that is the ex in front of me...back when she was about 19.

The rest of these are random posed Ren Faire show shots (we hijacked the Black Box theatre at the University)

And then a group shot of most of the actors and crew of our Ren Faire company.

Alright, that's all I can find for now, so you're safe for awhile.

Just gotta say again, I love these pictures, Tristan. Your make damn decent looking armor, something I wish I had the money, time and equipment to get into. I made a very simple Japanese Hara-Ate once, but it was out of leather. It amazes me what you and other armorers are able to create.

The Celts on rocks shot is outstanding, ya'll fit the role really well. Looks much the same as I imagine a roaming band of fianna would. I'll have to get some pictures from the next battle I go to (should be the 25th) of me and my guys. I doubt we'll fit the role nearly as well, what with foam weapons, and possibly one large black man wearing plaid.

And seriously man, you gotta convince someone at work that it's ok for you to grow facial hair and let your hair grow out. You look great like that, got one of them faces that's better suited for a time period long since past, kinda like me.

Also, tell that A-hole to stop resting his sword tip down on the rocks!

Trist, now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about! Those are simply amazing! The armor is very impressive. I can't believe you built those. Such a talent! I love the group shots, everyone looked like they were having so much fun. Always liked that about the Renn. Fests, looks like you could really enjoy that job. AH! There's that kilt! lol!

Dayve, great band shots! Haven't been to a good concert in soooo long. You just made me very eager to see one. Also thanks for the beautiful sky pic! So your like me and just go "Oooo, pretty!" and snap the pic.

Chris, I'm diggin' the battle pics. Reminds me of when I used to watch a friend of mine do something similar a few years back. I apologize for not knowing the exact battle they were reinacting, but I remember my friend being in a kilt holding a very large shield and every time he would go out he would tell me "I go out, possibly to my death, but if so I welcome it in the name of victory." in a very bad accent. I really did enjoy watching those.

HK, that is a gorgeous Victorian piece. And I love the way the pic is shot. So jealous of the wardrobe!

PR, Cute pics as always! Awwww, lucky! I've always wanted to see Evanescence. How are they live?

My hubby took this pic. Always thought I looked so small in this pic for some reason...

Evanescence were awesome live! I almost couldn't believe Amy was singing live, she sounded soooo amazing! Of course she was singing live, it just sounded so good! Usually the sound at concerts is a little off (and it was for the instruments) but she managed to be spot-on and was just incredible. Then they did a little meet and greet behind the venue (first tour, right before they got HUGE) and Amy comes out and she's tiny! She came up to my chin, and I just couldn't believe it!

Oh yes, it was great! And probably not that many people ever got to meet Ben. I have a story about that, too actually. He came out first, and he started greeting and signing about as far from me as he could get, and it was just taking forever, so I finally went, "Ben! Ben I love you bunches!" And he looked up and said "Oh, I love you bunches too! Who said that?" and the security guard shined his flashlight over at me and I waved madly and he gave me a huge grin. When he worked his way over to me I shook his hand and gave him a hug and said "I love you bunches and you were great tonight! Is Amy coming out?" That's why it says BUNCHES! over his signature on my shirt. I had to ask him twice if Amy was coming out, and he went and got her and she came over to me almost right away and it was the coolest!!! She was so sweet to me and I know I was just gushing like an idiot...
*sigh* By far the best concert experience I have had.

the green shirt pic with the "woods" behind me was taken in my backyard and I made teh shirt

Here is my Inara costume as I zoomed by the camera (frankly that whole weekend was a blur but such a blast)

Keep the pics coming they just encourage my opinion that browncoats are HoT!

And for those envious of my local crew, we started with only 5-7 people from talking on the old prospero board, now we number well over 200 locally and shindig it up nearly every weekend, sometimes multiple shindigs going

Ooh, artcat, pretty Inara! Is this the one that was "in progress" awhile back, or has my brain pulled that memory from the ether?
Either way, it looks gorgeous...as does the wearer, of course!

200+ Browncoats...every weekend...*sigh*...that would be heaven...

Gladiator, nice shots! And the 2nd shot is priceless...CMH pegged the perfect caption, though!

Ok, now you look nice and green

Sooooo very jealous of you! I'm gettin' green now. Do you see the green? Do ya see it??

ArtCat81, that is so cool you got a REAL Reaver costume. Did you feel like eating anyone or any scalping urges? Hehe! I love the Inara costume, were you the one that posted the thread about making the Inara dress?

G32, niiice band pics! Throwin' up the horns for ya. Ok, I'd say something about the 2nd pic, but he's got them crazy eyes so... lol!

Actually its my brothers reaver costume, and yes the Inara costume is mine and yes I posted about it on here somewhere before. The costume did not turn out quite like I hoped and will be undergoing a complete overhaul.

if yall want to see more pics from that lonestar shindig weekend here are more reaver shots and me looking particularly frazzled and sleep deprived http://wmg.photobucket.com/widgets/dynamicflash.php?featuretype=bucket
strip&featurename=LoneStarShindig06&pa=/v223/Lost_Thought/ApolloCon06
/

as for shindigs most of our weekly mayhem draws between 10 and 30 browncoats each, the larger events of course draw more, I am throwing a holiday party for the crew in December and have folks from as far away as Baton Rouge coming 8) soo I have a completely unknown number of browncoats descending on my home in Texas for gift hijacking, dancing, food and fun.

Browncoats are the shiniest folks in the 'verse

Haha! I love it! The Badger pic is too cute. No taking the mouse away from you. You're one of the people that keeps this thread alive and well.

NICODEMUS

No new pictures of me to post, although I do have some ideas for a few. Anyway, since there's been some signature pics posted, I thought I'd include this one, given that it's getting towards the time of year when our team humiliates the visitors (this years main whipping boy will be England).
