Spoilers. I guess... not really..

Ok. I have a few questions about Rivers story line:
First off: What is her relationship with the HOB i.e. why do they (blue sun) want her so bad?
It also seems that when Jubal Early was on board Serenity: Simon Says "they want me and river alive" (or something to that effect) and Jubal knows he is right. But the Operative wants River Dead, because she knows about Miranda.
So: are Blue Sun and The Alliance different? Why would blue sun even want River?
Please answer my questions. Or has Joss even answered them yet? I'm not really a FF newb, just haven't read Serenity TLB or visual Companion. Sorry and thanks

I thought Blue Sun was Alliance. ::shrugs::

But, don't take my word for it - I don't have any of those printed materials, either.

Oh, and maybe the comic might help answer your question.

Your all crab. Its like this the Blue Sun Corp is a big conglomerate of soda, fast food, and textiles. It works in secret with MI 6 of the Alliance. Alliance is the Sihnon and Londinium worlds merged with Core planets under their rule. Ok its like the Ketucky Fried Chicken Company commanded by Colonel Sanders who keeps his secret recipe at Fort Knox Kentucky hmmmm. The US goverment also has KFC diners in every pro western country. They are known to send OO agents to eliminate any Bo Jangles competition outside the US. Alliance sends operatives out to the border worlds to cover up any secrets.

Every heist he's gotta start yelling my name.

Blue Sun is a private company that does a lot of work for the Alliance and probably has a lot of influence in Parliament. The idea being that it can be hard to tell when your dealing with the company or the government.

As far as the Operative wanting River dead and the Blue Hands wanting her alive I suspect that it's largely a question of the extra time River has been on the run. She's less likely to be usefull to the Alliance now and she is definitely more dangerous so the thinking changes from, "Alive if at all possible," to, "Kill her if you have to to be sure."

The Operative wants River dead because of what she is and what she knows. Blue Sun would want her alive because of what she is and what she knows.

While Parliament and Blue Sun cooperate closely, they are not the same institution and each would try to manipulate and influence the other.

It is the operative who discovers River may know secrets when he looks through the files and learns she has had access to the minds of people who contain these secrets. This is when River becomes a liability and why the operative kills the doctor who was running the experiments. That is when the subliminal messages of Miranda were started. The operative would have reported his findings and those involved would guess River knew about Miranda. Thus River was now a threat.
