I'll be at Dragon*Con alone, and I plan on marching with the 76th Independent Battalion. I've been lurking on the threads. When all decisions are made, I will do my best to get a full uniform.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Tristan, I'll be there and am excited to be part of the 76th.

If you are looking for a good NCO, I'm your man. I was a sergeant (E-6) in the Rangers & I think I can help whip this bunch into shape.

I will be there, proudly marching with the 76th as a medic, complete with First Aid 'tonics' and 'medicine'. I will be alone as well (as it seems many of us will be, so we can keep each other company) and I don't care what rank I am, though I do agree that Tristan should be in charge of us all.

I plan to begin to assemble the costume when I have the available finances, thanks to the shiny links that have been provided by everyone.

Also,I'm blown away by the level of collaboration by folks on this thread. My hat's off to you.Myself,I have limited time but would still like to help somehow.

Tristan: I do hope you realise what you've set in motion here! This is one of the most shiny happenings ever!

Welcome to all the marchers! I know there are some out there who posted on the other threads but have not "made their mark" here yet.

NaughtyMan, thank you for that. Glad you have decided to march with us! I am pretty sure you have checked out the other threads, but if not, there is a lot of info in them regarding costuming, weapons, ranking, etc. Again, welcome!

And I was also surprised at the reaction to this...I had no idea there were that many interested!

CANTER

I am now officially depressed.

I was planning on going to Dragoncon next year, and your marching orders just made me more interested and excited.

But I finally did the math and there's just no way for me to afford it. The exchange rate is killing me. The whole deal would cost me R23 000-00. Approximately two months' salary.

Now I'm sad.

Sad and depressed.

Sad and depressed and disgusted.

What would be the chance of convincing the organisers to rather do the 'con in SA? *smiling hopefully*
*smile slips* Not all that great I suppose...

Oh well....Can I do a virtual march?

I'm thinking we'll rise again!

I'm trawling for cheaper flights.

Maybe on one of the lesser known airlines.

If I can cut down on flights and accommodation I could maybe see a light on the end of the tunnel....without the light being the on coming train!

I can search for airline tickets from here, but what's the accommodation like?

On the Dracon*con site it says approx. 150 dollars a night. Is that then high-end or standard fares? Would I be able to get cheaper close by?

(I know next to nothing of dollar purchase power and how prices relate....)

I really want to make a trip to the US and this sounds like an excellent excuse to do so... But it has to be more affordable!

I'm thinking we'll rise again!

Canter, I do know that the more people in the room, the lower the prices. I am a newbie at this...it will be my second Con...but I do know that Browncoats are always looking for roommates, and that there are several nearby hotels with lower prices. I would suggest posting on the D*C thread when it appears....or there may already be one. Let people know what you are planning on doing, and there will be plenty of responses.

I hope to see you there!

Last year when my brother went he shared a room with 3 people, which menat he spent $150 for 3 nights total, if you do not mind floorspace instead of a bed you could probably stay at that main hotel and get the price down even further.

I think he even had some offers of free crash space.

Canter,

your best bet is to keep up to date with the 76th's growth and if there becomes an appropriate space for it post you are looking for a roommate and explain why (aka flying to America and how much the trip is going to cost you etc.), or you see someone looking for a roommate that is your chance!

tristan, my mind constantly whirls in multiple directions at once, the trick is typing as the thoughts come to me and worrying about organizing the thoughts and fixing typos later.

I will be taking advantage of roomate offers as well. I'll take anyone, but I'd rather room with the 76th (that's not entirely true, I'd rather room with a bunch of women-of-questionable-virture ). Anyway, as time goes on Tristan, we'll have to form a roomate thread, bunk as many people together as we can. Five people in a room could get costs down to $30 a night, and I've already said I'll sleep on the floor.

Also, for those marching with us, I need hometowns (city, state, country) and a name you would like to appear after your rank. Doesn't have to be your real last name, but it can't be your handle on here as that is your callsign. Also, if you wouldn't mind signing our map, you can find it here:

We give honorary positions to those that have made large contributions to the unit. Boomer is an honorary because she and her husband are making the lanyards for the group, are offering assistance in leather working to the troops, etc. Come to think of it, I think it's harder to get an honorary rank than it is to get a regular rank.

Morning, all!
I want to go ahead and post something regarding "joining" the 76th. The XO and I have talked about this and agreed that everyone who wants to join should be able to. This is, after all, just another way for fans to show their love. So, if you want to be a member of the 76th, feel free to sign up! Even if you are not able to march at D*C, there will be other marches or cons or shindigs in which you can show off. We will have patches and all sorts of other items to purchase, make, find, etc., so everyone should be able to create their own uniform.
The one thing we are a bit more strict on is the ranking. Everyone is considered a Private unless they have or will be giving something to the group in terms of skills, advice and expertise, etc.; they are not automatic, nor do they give anyone any "real" authority. Remember, this is an imaginary battalion For the sake of the march, I would like to try to follow military guidlines as far as discipline. I am not talking about walking in lockstep down the street...that would not be the Independent way! I would like to see some semblance of order, though, as I am sure most of us would...it will look very impressive, don't you think?

So, in a nutshell, even if you can't march, feel free to join. Rank is given on merit/contributions, but everyone is equal in terms of input.

USMCHELLRAISER

I notice people are looking for jobs, so at other's recomendation, I am posting some of the structure in a Marine Corps Infantry battalion.

At the Battalion level, each S- Shop has a specific job.

S-1 is administration, personnel records, documents, promotions, pay, etc.

***I think this is an easy choice- anyone in the S-1 shop would be web-admin, roster/roll call/personnel file database maintainance. If there was a call for an administrative Officer, without worrying about how their rank would relate to the Chain of Command, this would be the place.

S-2 is intelligence, meaning foreign and domestic, location of friendly troops, enemy positions (anywhere in the world), satellite maps, weather reports, etc.

***I imagine that a 76th Infantry S-2 shop would handle location of events, fans, sci-fi cons, etc. anything that could be useful information to the group. Intel never knopws what they are going to be asked for information-wise until it gets asked for.***

S-3 is Operations, or "planning". This is the S Shop that handles everything from planning a simple rifle range on base here in California to a "Pointman" range in Australia, to the route for a Battalion 3- mile run, to a rescue mission in the Sunni Triangle.

***Event planners pretty simple, but horribly complex. they also compile the information from S-2, what the Supply Train (or "Log Train" for "Logistics") can provide for the troops involved (water, food, badges, patches, merchandise, etc? I can only imagine), S-5 Public Relations, S-6 Communications, etc.

S-4 is Logistics, or the Supply guys. They handle getting the three B's to the troops (Beans, Bullets, and Band-Aids).

***In the real world, that would be Merchandise with the 76th logo, posters, setting up and arranging for tables, water, snacks if apllicable, places at sites to lock up all of the material/merchandise. They would be responsible for their own security alongside S-3 "Operations".

S-5 is Public Relations. This includes Psychological Operations, Pre-Bombing flyer creation, etc. they also handle press releases about training, after-action reports, etc..

***This is a direct translation one. Not a lot of changes to this one.

S-6 is communications, or the Comm Shop. They handle all internet access, intranet (regarding operations/mission info and planning, messages). They also handle field radios, computer tech support and set-up.

*** Another direct translation. Possibly the guys/gals who talk to the webmaster or run it themselves.

Each shop has an Officer, senior enlisted, and a clerk.

Sometimes they get a spiff nickname. The S-3 Officer is the "Ops O", the S-4 Officer is the "Suppo", Etc.

Also, in the infantry, there are further divisions of manpower, with "billets" taking or sometimes superceding rank.

Marine Corps Infantry division of billets-

4 Marines= Fireteam
Team Leader
Grenadier(M16/M203)/Designated Marksman
Automatic Rifleman
Rifleman

3 Fireteams= Squad

3 Squads= Platoon

2nd Platoon
3rd Platoon
Weapons Platoon (Machine Guns, Mortars, Assaultman)

5 Platoons= Company

5 Companies= Battalion
Alpha/Echo Company
Bravo/Fox Company
Charlie/Golf Company

Weapons Company (Heavy Weapons, usually vehicle-borne, like .50 Cal MGs, Mk-19 Automatic Grenade Launchers, 81mm Mortars, TOW Missile Launchers, etc)

Headquarters and Support Company
(Snipers and Intelligence gatherers are included here)

*************************************************
Platoon-Level attachments:
Machinegun Teams (Team Leader, Gunner, Ammunition Bearer) [2 MG Teams + Sduad Leader = MG Squad]
Assaultman Pairs (Rocket Launchers/Explosives for breaching, General Destruction.

Corpsman/Medic (One per squad, minimum one per platoon)

EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal)
Sniper Teams (2/3 people)

Hopefully all of that typing gives someone a new idea, and not just eye strain.

For the record, I am an Active Duty

CPL in the USMC Infantry. I am a Squad Leader in real life, and a good singer in my dreams.

"...let's not ruin an otherwise pleasant day with unnecessary bloodshed..."
