The banner is free to any and all members of the 76th!

I'm glad you like it Colonel.

You appear to have snagged just a touch more than you wanted, or not quite enough.

The "Sign up NOW!" and "More information" lines are actually 2 seperate lines.
If you want to include them, snag lines 2+ of my sig. (reply with quote to this message, and pull it out of the reply).

CANTER

Hi guys!

Thanks for all the offers of help! You guys are making me very, very shy now. I don't know what to say. If you guys can get me the badges together and just let me know where to send the cash, I'd be very, very grateful!

Tristan, will you let me know if there's anything I can do? I feel a bit useless.

I've heard back from the weapons guy. They say the gun I'm asking about doesn't exist. Which I find a bit strange since I've seen pictures.
It's probably a numbers thing, I'm looking now through his catalogue to see one that looks similar and think I've found one. Its a
Tokyo Marui TM-AEG-G36C, and it looks rather similar to the pictures posted here. In fact, I think it's the same gun (what with the G36C and everything!) So I can't understand why they told me that a G36C is a Glock 36 handgun. ?!! Well, life is strange I suppose.

And I might get some good news on airtickets. Keep your fingers crossed.

And Magdalena: I was just wondering, Are you flying directly from Aus to Atlanta, or do you also have to stop along the way to change flights?

I'm visiting my folks next week and will then ask my mom to help me with the coat. Will we know by then what sort of material we're using? And you'll have to post pictures because I haven't recognised a single material name since the beginning of the coat discussion. I suppose terminology change the further south you go...

And, one last question until I get back to a computer on Monday.. Can we make t-shirts with the battalion logo? It's so pretty.

Have a nice weekend!

Morning, Canter!

One thing I may suggest...hold off on the coat until at least Monday. By then, I should have a pattern stabilized and pictures up in this thread. We are aiming at having a single "cut" of coat if at all possible. I promise that I am working as fast as humanly possible to get photos up so you can see what it is supposed to look like! The material is still up in the air, but I think we have narrowed it down to either a linen or a looser-weave cotton duck (almost canvas). The coat I am building right now is made of the cotton duck. Y'all will have to let me know what you think when you see it.

As for the gun...from what I remember, the Marui you are talking about is a high-end gun...they are kind of expensive, too. Remember, if you can't get ahold of one, there will be at least a few for you to borrow when you arrive! (Notice the when and not if )

Don't worry about doing anything...if you come up with any ideas or input, let us know. Just showing up will be enough!

T-shirts...now that would be a shiny idea! Anyone in here know anything about printing up t-shirts?

This is a post from Quandom over on the Roll Call thread that I am moving over here for all of us to see. We would like to keep the Roll Call thread for the use of people signing up, and this thread for the longer posts involving discussions. Not trying to be an ass about it, but it makes it easier for us to find who signed up and to transfer the info.

Also, for the exact location of CSA butternet pants with optional infantry Sargeant's strip, see

http://www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg14.htm

amd find the text
"STANDARD INFANTRY TROUSERS"

and for the NCO stripe, the text
"STRIPE OR PIPING "

'butternet' is extra (!!) so the cost of butter NCO all wool pants with the regulation 1" wide stripe will be $ $125. (65+30+30) - and you'll have to wear drawers underneath or your legs will itch!

Turning back to organization;
Given that Independents would be raised local to a particular location, I'd expect that you would first see sharpshooter detachments first organized informally within the batallion (regiment) and then gathered within the brigade, which is what happens in the Army of Northern Virginia. In contrast, the US service had two entirely independent batallions of United States Sharp Shooters (USSS) with special uniforms (dark green with black rubber buttons) and weapons (Sharps breech loading rifles).

So, let us suppose the 76th is an element of the 57th Brigade. The sharpshooters might be cathered into a 'converged' battalion during an engaement, then returned to their parent battalions.

I'd also note that unlike current practice, the Indy batallions have their own identity - they are 1/57, but more like the regiments in a Civil War brigade. As you all may remember, all regiments in a CS brigade would nearly always be from the same 'state' - I suppose that would be analagous to 'planet' in our 'Verse.

I'd speculate that the Alliance would be much more like the US army of WWII - 'vanilla legions'.
Indies are 'fire and manuever',
Alies are 'mass and blast'
et al.

This is way too much fun and is keeping me from work.

Oh well, another time consuming vice is born.

Canter...don't you be shy! We're all browncoats and we got your back! Remember; if you can't walk, you crawl and if you can't crawl you find someone to carry you.
I have a question regarding sidearms? My husband found a site with replica Civil War era (non-firing, of course) weapons; if I got something really, really odd looking; would that be okay for the sidearm and I've got my 'regulation' rifle already.

So, to Quandom I say thank you for the link to the pants! They look good...but they are pricey. But again...they look really good! *sigh* Ah, a dilema...

As for the rest of the post, nice observations!
I would like to point out, however, that the 76th is not an element of the 57th. We are our own separate group. We would have been created on a single planet, but that does not mean everyone would have been born on that planet...they may have traveled there for the muster. While there are some serious parallels to the CSA army, it is not exactly the same...add about 600 years and you have the general idea
So, the Real World 76th is recruiting all types of units from all over the globe. We are forming our own Battalion separate from the "existing" 57th and will be going from there. I would love to eventually have enough members that we do break down into local "detached" groups that act autonomously with loose guidance from a central Headquarters. That would be the shiniest thing in the world! But, for right now, in order to prevent a splintering that may kill us before we solidly form, the above back-story is what we will go with. We are separate from the 57th and mustering from one planet. Your birth planet is still up to you, though, so have fun with that one. BWTP as the XO makes the final decisions on the military aspects, but I think he will agree with me on this. I know he will have limited access to this site until Saturday or Sunday, but I will be in touch with him.

I am not trying to shoot down any ideas...I love the thought and research everyone has been putting into this! I am just worried that people may take an idea and run with it, and that a post may be taken as gospel.

To make things easier, whenever a decision is made, BWTP or myself will post the new "rule". That way, there will be no confusion. We will have discussions on subjects, but when the decision has been made, we will officially post it. I hope that will clear up any confusion. For the most part, everything in the first post of each of these threads are the rules so far.

Everyone alright with this? It will again create less confusion as to "What are we supposed to be doing?" I don't want the 76th to fall prey to lack of command, so to speak.

Sister, I do not have a problem with that at all. Let me talk with BWTP to see what he thinks about it.
And hey, if you come across some really weird ones, share with the rest of the class!

Thats not a bad idea, im pretty handy with PVC, so an "anti-armor" modification could be something for me to experiment with (daymn this gun is prooving versatile, a new hat every few days!)the nice thing is the visable portion of the barrel screws on so making a new attachment should not be difficult. If it works well ill post a howto for anyone else interested in more firepower.

Various and sundry;

yes, I don't want my speculation to obscure the goal of the excercise.

Second - now that we are considering what appears to be Anti Tank Rifles - pretty much what the Russians used in the bulk of WWII - have we considered the equivalent of sticky bombs or satchel charges? I have seen an inexpensive item for Painball. It is all of black nylon, with holders for 4 of the refill tubes. I would imagine with a little paint and filling the tubes with resin for weight, we'd have either sticky bombs or things that look like projectiles for the ATR.

In a separate post I will describe and add a picture of the 'sniper' rifle I created by removing, adding, and gluing pieces to a Crossman Pulsue R70.
Longer barrrel and a real scope make it plausibly a long range weapon.

When you cosnider that any good hunting rifle nowdays would do in a pinch for a adequate sniper weapon, not hard to believe Indy soldiers might have the functional equivalent, much the way American Revolutionary war militia had long rifles as their private wepon brought to serve in the war.

Very late evening, everyone!

LostThought, thank you for that maybe offer.

Boomer, those pants would be fine with the leg stripe. Thank you for that link.

Quandom, as long as the base sniper rifle is from the G36 family, just about anything goes. We would need to see any mods you made before the march.

Magda, good on ya! Walking might be a good plan for the rest of us, too!

Alright...I stayed up way longer than I should to get this done. Remember, this is the first rough-build of the coat. The only concrete thing is the pattern. The outer cloth is the cotton duck. While I like the look of it, it does not have the proper "flow" to it. I am sure that several washes might make it look right, but I do want to try the linen and possibly one other alternative. The lining on this coat is an off-white, which happened to be the only color I had laying around...
I do need input. I looked at more screencaps, and this is a pretty close match to Mal's coat. I guessed on the two side pockets, and was not able to see that there were breast pockets on the coat. I matched the buttons as closely as I could as well.
Let me know what y'all think.

I will be on and off most of the rest of the weekend, but I will try to pop in when I can.

Magdalena, you never fail to put a smile on my face!

Tristan, the coat is georgeous!!! I'm fond of it for all the obvious reasons;also it's unusual to see a knee length coat nowadays,it's special.I don't even think that the drape is that much of a problem. The only negative thing to me is that the coat looks more khaki than butternut like the trousers.I imagine that could be remedied with a bit of dye.I must say you are amazingly prolific in your tayloring!

As the resident demo man, I'd already been planning on a few satchel charges and the like, since it'll be easier to carry heaps of "stuff that goes boom" and various casings/wrappings (each used as the circumstances warrant), rather than a a multitude of devices that each have a singe function (although I may do that as well).

Nice thinking all the way around.

A gentle reminder here, fellow volunteers. Atlanta is an extraordinarily constume-friendly environment. (In Baltimore, the police would never let the parade happen, because of all the prop firearms; it's all but killed costuming at the Games Workshop tournament weekends there. In the NW, many of the ConComs, such as OryCon, are "weapons free" cons, and that's all she wrote.) Still; it'd be kindly not to give the DragonCon staff, or the Atlanta PD, fits. If you're kitbashing a sniper rifle, LMG, ATR, *make sure the business end has an orange barrel plug* for the parade. I think it'd be OK to make it removable for photo-ops later on, but make sure you HAVE one. Demolition teams are probably better served with satchel charges and the like than plastic "pineapple" grenade props hanging on a harness -- though one or two, discreetly tucked in a pocket for photo ops, probably does no harm.

Tristan, if you have other thoughts on weapons policy for the Battalion, chime right in -- these are only "lessons learned" from a few... ahem, from a bit of costuming and propmaking.

We live in a world that's anxious about arms... faux or no. Let's not wear our welcome thin.

I thought that those pants, at $55, were a little more reasonable financially than the others. That company has many more weights and colors, as well, with prices ranging up to around $75. The fact that the pants are custom made for you is a bonus, too.

God I can't be away for this many days, there is way too much to catch up on though I guess there's nothing for it.

Okay, first off, Canter. No one in the 76th is useless. The fact that I know the idea has spread as far as South Africa (and Magda, that goes for you in AU as well) is more than enough. And I've told you, don't worry about the money for the patches. Once a definitive decision is made on the 57th patch (there are concerns, mainly by me, as to the quality of the one with the blue star as none of us have seen it) and I get the 76th ones made up, I will have a package off to you ASAP. Speaking of the unit patches, Tristan, I'm thinking we may need 300 instead of 200, what say you?

I can't remember who brought up shirts, but that's a great idea. Maybe we can all come up with a design and send it ioff to someone to make it. The only experience I've ever had with making shirts is with cafe press.

Quandom, the rifle you posted will not work as it is a member of the M-16 varients and not the G36 varients that have been decided on as the base weapon for the 76th. Sorry.

Tristan, the coat kicks ass, even in rough form. I'll take one as is, unless new shiny features come out.

And, just to make sure that there is no confusion as to the base history of our unit. We are a new unit, yes, but that's okay because the 76th will have been formed at the beginning of hostilities. Not as a bolstering force to the units engaged on Hera. If we are to grow together as a unit, we'll have had to fought in the trenches with one another. I know this is all ficticious, but it adds to the fun, and I want to make sure we're all on the same page.

Okay, I may have missed some things, but I'm tired so please forgive me. I've added those to the site that have given me their info here. Quandom, I will need you're hometown (as in real) just to finish off your info. If there is anyone I missed please shoot me an email.

Also, once we work out the details, those of you coming in from overseas, your dedication to the cause is noted and proper recognition will be awarded. Anyway, I wish you all a good evening, and I'll see you on the boards soon.

Oh, and before I forget, my rings came, so I've started making my sleeves. I went with a larger diameter, so it shouldn't take me terribly long. Later guys.

TRISTAN

Early morning, all!

I'll be starting a new thread...so give me a bit of time to get everything moved and situated.

Thank you all for the comments on the coat!

Magda...quadruple-post, eh? hehehe

NaughtyMan, the color IS a khaki...that was one of the shades of brown I am going for. There was an earlier discussion regarding color. As long as the pattern of the coat remains the same, SLIGHT color variations are allowable. I would prefer to stick to the khakis and lighter browns. If I come across a butternut, I will throw that into the mix, too!
And thank you for the compliment! I enjoy doing Firefly-related costumes, because everyone has been very helpful and very accepting. I like making outfits for people that appreciate them!

DocJubal, thank you for the advice/warning. I was going to contact someone at the D*C website to see what their "official" stance on the orange plugs is, but your statement makes a great deal of sense. So, we will accept that as a rule...be sure that your waepons have the orange plug in the barrel! It would be bad to have anyone A) ejected from D*C and b) In jail. That, and let's not go too crazy with the grenades. We're marching, not taking over the town.

Boomer, I am going to go ahead and add that link to the opening post on the threads from now on. Thank you again.

Alright, off to shift the words from this thread to a new one. See y'all soon!

ShinyHappyKlin, who is the creator of the Browncoat "Losing Side" t-shirt would be perfect to talk to about shirts. I believe Tristan is planning on contacting her.

I aim to misbehave!

Ack! The XO and CO post at the same time!

Howdy, BWTP.
I agree, 300 would be better for the patches. Let me know what you will need and when. I would suggest waiting until after the holidays, as until then, I will be low on funds.

As for the T-shirts, FFG sent me a link to ShinyHappyKlin at www.OutToTheBlack.com. I will be contacting her next week to let her know what we are planning.
So, if anyone out there is good at designing, we are open for a design for the "official" T-shirt of 76th!

I also concur with the post to Quandom. Please keep the weapons in the G36 family. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment on the coat! I am happy with the pattern, I just need to try a few other cloth types until I am happy with it. When you do the site update, would you mind posting one of those photos as the preliminary design? I'd appreciate it.

I again concur with our history. That was the original idea; that we are a newly-formed unit at the onset of the hostilities. We will be able to grow together.

Thanks for the post, BWTP. I am dying to see how the sleeves turn out!

That took a long time, but I finally got the thread posted. If there is anything I missed, please email me to let me know. I went over the past several threads, but I always feel like I missed something.

See you all over there!

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Wow! The coat looks great Tristan! And that is only the rough version? I agree w/ BWTP, I would be happy with that one. Of course I'll hold out for the final version if there are going to be improvements.

QUANDOM

Tristan, Wo de tien ah!
I can't even cut on a straight line, so I am thoroughly impressed with what you say is only your first effort. (I suppose the final shade will be darker.).

I suspect there will be a market for this beyond the broderbund of the 76th. Good will is great, but "money is the sinews of war" - I hope you make a truly healthy profit on these.

Thank you, Quandom! The response to the coat has made me very happy so far! I was worried that it wouldn't quite work out right, but it has. I should have the "proper" cloth version done sometime next week...I hope. The Xmas shopping has taken up way too much of my time lately!

We have moved to a new home...so come play with us there!
