The two worst things to happen to VHS was a tape of your favorite show being eaten up by player and being unable to get the "12:00" to stop blinking.

I remember being baffled by BASIC on the thing called the computer.

Yes, I just turned 47 so my rock and roll is the Beatles, the Rolling Stones when Mick was under 30 and being awed at The Sound of Music.

I was watching when MTV first came on the air.

"Video Killed the Radio Star" was the very first video aired.

FINN MAC CUMHAL

I wrote my first program in BASIC on the TRS-80 with 8 Kb of memory using PCDOS 1.1 in grade school.

There was no hard drive, so I stored it on a 5¼ in. double sided floppy. Floppies are those little disks computers used before the invention of RW-CD/DVD, zip drives and flash drives. You may remember them as 3½ in. not so floppy floppy disks, but we didn’t have the advanced models back then.

My program was basically a lot of PRINT statements and IF…THEM…ELSE statement, which printed a text story on the screen about a D&D adventurer – it was modeled after the choose-your-own-fate D&D books that came out briefly during the eighties. I loved those books. With each screen full of text a choice between two to three options would be offered the user, most of which ended in disaster. I was the only on who ever played it, and I knew which choice to make.

Later I would discoverer that it was a hell of lot easier to just write my stories down on paper, so I bought a little manual mechanical word processor, called a “typewriter.” It was from Sears. I wrote many wild and fascinating stories on my “typewriter.” Some of which I continue to write today, though I’ve moved onto more advanced technology.

Also I do remember when MTV appeared. That was back when they played music videos.

I remember writing my first programs in BASIC on a RS/TSCE mainframe at the local college. All students using the computer, even high school kids like me, had a whopping 40K of storage available to them! A few computer majors would request additional space if they were working on an especially long and complex program.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, FMF. I remember all of the things listed above. Truthfully, I learned how to type on a manual typewriter in high school. There were 2 electric typewriters in the class, but the teacher insisted on everyone learning on a manual in order to develop the correct pressure for our key strokes.

Computers? I remember the 1st ones that were as big as a room. You heard about them in movies.
