I've been thinking a lot about what you said here. I've been thinking for a while that this topic should be brought up. So, thanks for giving us a window


Personally, I think that judging health /solely/ by weight isn't right. For instance, I'm just under 6', and probably (estimating on last weighting as I don't have a scale) about 170-180 lbs.

So, using Slowhand's numbers, if I'm only looking at weight and height, I'm actually under-weight. Though looking at my belly this isn't really so Given my age (30 on Sat!)/etc, I should be about 150 lbs to be fit. Extrapolating from when I was last fit and that my goals are the same of course.

Now, for Slowhand, 180 lbs might be healthy. This would definitely be true if he had a lot of muscle mass on him (that stuff's heavy!). But, this isn't necessarily going to be true for someone else.

I'm not trying to jump on Slowhand here. I just don't want people to read a height and weight and use that as there target. There are so many other factors in being healthy that such things can be quite unique.

Hell, someone could be very slim, but completely unhealthy. In fact, this is quite common. For instance, one of my buddies (late 30's) after going back to University, had a "field trip" with one of his classes. Something to do with developing nations.

They went to a local farm to take a tour. But, to "earn" there stay, they had to do some work before hand. Less than 10 minutes in, his class-mates (vast majority ~19) were complaining about sore backs/knees/etc. That they were tired and irritated that they were starting to sweat. He wasn't having any problems at all.

I wanted to continue with a discussion of diets (horrid things aren't they), but I'm extremely tired (it's about 3:20am right now). So, I'll leave it until another day.

Good point. I was basiclly basing my numbers on when I was healthy before college. Back then, I was between 175 and 185, and I had a lot of muscle on me. I lifted weights regularly. So, I'm really just trying to get back to that. According to different charts, for my age, height, and gender, I should be around 165. But, because I know I have a lot of muscle mass, 180 sounds good to me. LOL!

Perhaps one of these days we should start discussing "best practices" for healthy living. Perhaps including recipes so that people can know that being healthy doesn't mean eating "Styrofoam" Then at some point, post a summary.

Just finished lifting. Arms worn out! Having trouble hovering them above the keyboard! LOL!

I like the idea of recipes. Personally, I've been learning to cook healthy. Also, I've changed some of the things I know how to cook to make them more healthy. For example, I now used whole grain pasta instead of regular, and I look for the leanest ground beef I can find. Also, if you don't know how to cook, but want something good, fast, and healthy, look for the Tyson roasted chicken breasts. You can heat them in the oven or just pop them in the microwave for about 3 minutes. When they're done, I just pull the skin off and eat it with some veggies. Very tasty!

Hopefully this post makes sense as the wife got home in the middle of writing it and it's time for us to make supper now.

I know that this opinion isn't going to be popular, but I find microwaves... not good. Sure they heat things up quick, but at what cost. I'm not at all convinced that there isn't something more going on. Such as nutrients being destroyed. Of course in a pinch, what are you going to do. But, I really think that people should stay away from using them regularly. Which seems to be the case with people thinking that they don't have the time. Hell, I've seen some recent commercials that go along the lines that people aren't eating meals during the week anymore. I for one find that a... large red flag.

We all know that after getting home from a long day at work, cooking isn't exactly at the top of the to do list. But, why not make an event out of it? Personally, I think one of the causes of problems I see in society is a disconnection of the family. Wouldn't the time during preping and cooking be a great time to have a chat?

It'd give people (couples as well as room mates sharing the work load) a time to "wind down". IMO it'd reduce stress as well. And spreading the work over a couple of people would reduce the time necessary to fix a meal. One could also start trying food from different cultures; make a culinary adventure out of it e.g. stir frying is *very* quick and easy. Fresh food is also by far, better for you than the frozen/pre-prepared variety. So, better for the body = healthier, better immune system, etc.

The wonderful thing is, if you plan just two days in a row, you can figure out what recipes have the same ingredients. That way, you could do the prep for both days on day one. That is, as long as you have access to enough Tupperware containers

Or one could make one day (probably Sunday) the day to make the meals for the week. I forget which show it is, but there is one that cooks recipes with idea in mind. It should take just an afternoon of cooking and then suppers become just warming things up. Whether you use the oven or microwave depends on time available and preference. Of course, a similar Tupperware restraint is here as well


Just b/c I don't like chicken with skins, as an alternative, there are similar skinless chicken breast products out there. I have used Janes (comes frozen) and I'm about to try one by Maple Leaf (refrigerated).

At any rate, I'm about to try an experiment with cooking. So, if it's good, I'll let you guys know And if it's bad, I'll give you guys a warning

EDIT: It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. Here's what I did with modifications that I think will make it better. This is for one person.

Thai Green Curry
1/3 cup coconut milk
pre-cooked chicken
peanut oil
4 baby bok choy
some julienned bamboo shoots
noodles

This one takes about 15 minutes from beginning to end.

- fill pot, put on to boil, cover
- put 1 tblspoon peanut oil in small fry pan
- put a tsp or two of curry in, mix with oil
- chop bok choy
- by now the curry should be aromatic, add coconut milk and bamboo shoots
- don't /every/ let this boil!
- when water boils, put in noodles (asian noodles typically takes about 3 minutes to cook).
- put in bok choy, and chicken with the curry
- strain noodles, put in bowl, put curry stuff over noodles.

Very quick and nutritious. And scalable! Just add more stuff for more people and the great thing is that it takes pretty much the same time no matter how many you're cooking for (within reason of course )!

Haven't checked in for a couple of days or so. Recipes, huh? Sounds like a good idea. I cook for one (Maya, my cat prefers dry food) and I tend to not vary my routine a whole lot. I have read a couple of times that people who stick to a routine are thinner. I have actually put on a couple of pounds but still within a healthy range. I just find I have to watch what I eat and keep up my workouts or the weight can creep up on me.

NIA class this morning, cleaning house this afternoon.

GOTTHAMMER


Haven't posted in a bit, mostly coz' I was getting ready for a trip to Europe.

Well, I'm here now (currently Spain, tomorrow, France). Been walking plenty, at least 5 km (probably more), each day.
Trying to do other exercises to, like push ups and situps, but its kinda hard.
Weather's cold (hehehe, I'm used to the tropics), and the occasional shifts is probably why some of my group now have colds (I'm starting to have a runny nose myself).
For today: I walked at least 10 km, probably more (since around noon, I've been walking. Only took about 3 hours or so worth of breaks in the form of a rest at the hotel and a couple of bus tour rides). Stopped walking past 10 pm, after taking pics from the top of the museum of art thingy on a hill overlooking Barcelona. Nice city. Madrid, too. I love the churches and old buildings.
After the walk, and a short meal (which, in the past few days, usually meant a form of bread. I wonder why plenty of restaurants here have baguettes...), I did some situps/crunches and push ups.
Time to sleep.

Hmmn, Gotthammer, your trip sounds lovely. Sounds as if you've definitely found a way to keep fit (walking and such) while traveling.

An hour of kickboxing this am - 2 meditation sits.

To, Sigmanunki. While I agree with you microwaving probably isn't the best way to go, I'm not quite ready to get rid of my food nuker just yet. Maybe I'll guilt-trip myself into it if there's enough discussion. I don't use it a heck of a lot but some. I eat lots of fresh fruits and vegies.

I got in a couple hours of walking yesterday. Also, I think that the amount of sun I got yesterday didn't exactly do me well. Not feeling so hot today.


@Siri:

I'm not necessarily saying that microwaves are inherently evil (though lots of studies state this). It's just that I find that they are overused. Personally, I find that the taste is a hell of a lot better if you do _not_ use a microwave. I also find that most of the stuff you'll put in the microwave tends to have lots of preservatives, etc; fresh is always better. So, why use one? Convenience/speed is the typical answer.

I eat those frozen dinners from time to time as I get sick of cooking for myself all, the, time. Why have it in a few minutes when the oven is right there? Sure a frozen dinner will take a good chunk of time longer in the oven, but why the rush? It's not like there's much convenience either way. Both require the frozen dinner to be put in the oven/microwave and then we wait.

Also, there's things like peas that pretty much take the same amount of time whether you use the microwave or stove. So, for at least some things, it doesn't really matter.

One of my hopes, is to end up with a long list of quick nutritious meals. That hopefully don't have much of a fallout when considering dishes/pots/etc to wash afterward. I think that my recipe above fits this. Though others are the true judge.

Here's a simpler one that I've had that's quite good as well.

Jane's pub style chicken strips
Raspberry spread
Brie
Pita bread

I like pub style chicken strips b/c the breading is light and won't fall off the chicken like heavier breading can. For the size of pita bread that I'm using, I use two chicken strips for each "taco" style one.

The last few minutes of cooking the chicken, put in the pita bread to warm it. Remember to be careful when handling it after it comes out as pockets of hot (!) air can pop and hit your hand, ouch (learned this on the hard way)!

There are two main ways to "plate" this.

1) Taco method.

Put some sliced brie on one side of the pita bread and raspberry spread on the other. Put the chicken strips on one side and roll up like a taco.

2) Sandwich method.

Similarly, put brie on one pita and spread the raspberry on the other. Put the chicken on the brie and cover with the other pita. Cut into slices.

One note about this one though. The raspberry spread becomes runny when heated. So, it'll drip. Just a heads up in case someone actually tries this; don't want to ruin peoples clothes
