Wash was a funny character who had a lot to contribute to story lines and all that other bullshit... so why the hell did he have to die? it taints the movie in my opinion... my mom wont watch it because I told her Wash died... I feel so traumatized I feel like launching a class action lawsuit

YINYANG

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

Wash died because it's Joss' universe, not yours. There doesn't have to be any other reason than that.

In any event, welcome to the site!

clearly Joss Weadon's universe doesnt extend beyond a single season as well as a movie that leaves some viewers slightly angry

When observing a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick in slow motion, one finds that Chuck Norris actually rapes his victim in the ass, smokes a cigarette with Dennis Leary, and then roundhouse kicks them in the face.

I thought it was an effective death. Joss has long been known to kill characters unexpectedly, and that particular death really ratcheted up the level of tension in the movie - I was on the edge of my seat from that moment on, convinced that any and all of the rest of the crew was genuinely at risk. The end would not have carried nearly as much punch without Wash's otherwise unfortunate demise.

And... do you often spoil major plot points in movies for your family?

Once a grizzly bear threatened to eat Malcolm Reynolds. Mal showed the bear his fist and the bear proceeded to eat himself, because it would be the less painful way to die.

hey buddy I've got enough tragedy to go on with in real life... i dont want it in my movies... why couldnt Joss have killed somebody who was less funny? The universe needs funny people...

Malcolm Reynolds sleeps with a night light. Not because Malcolm Reynolds is afraid of the dark, but the dark is afraid of Malcolm Reynolds

Well, then, I guess you'll just have to make your own show/movie.

As to why kill the funny guy? 'Cause it's less expected (surprised you, right?). Besides, everyone on Firefly is funny to one degree or another.

And... why do you keep quoting yourself?

Because Wash's death actually produced a sense of peril that wouldn't have otherwise been there. It's a truism in action movies that the good guy always comes out OK in the end. But with Wash dead, one got the sense that they might actually all die, that death was a real option in the situation. And IMHO, that was a brilliant piece of film-making, because it got the audience to actually feel fear (which the characters were certainly feeling).

Again, though, I have to remark on how selfish it seems for someone to demand that Joss tell the story just the way they want it. It's his ruttin' story, let him tell it. Plus, last time I checked, people really do die, and those left behind really do have to grieve and get over them. And going through that process over Wash and Book makes the 'Verse a much more richly textured place to inhabit.
