I wanted to be an actress. BIG surprise there. Was on track. Choir/dance/community theater. And then I realized that I didn't actually like for people to look at me. Sort of a weird sensation of watching myself make a fool of myself. Could never get beyond that point.

My next ambition was law school and a job as a public defender somewhere. Well babies and following a man around the world put paid to that.

So here I am. Under paid, living in podunk USA, with 2 of the loveliest children one will ever find.

How about you? Who were you going to be?

Coming from meager beginnings and living in the middle of nowhere Iowa, I didn't really have any lofty goals. I didn't think about the future...

Went to college cuz everyone else was...started out to be a teacher, but didn't like what I saw in the school system. Finally got a degree and got a job in insurance cuz it was a job and I'm still there!

wow.. how to respond to such a question... At different points in my life I have wanted to be everything from actress (age 5) to a veterinarian (age 10-13) to a sound engineer (age 17). Never really been one to follow up on dreams. The last years have been marked by my almost total lack of ambition. Where did I see my self at this point. I believe that if I take out the various career opportunities I have thought of, I am where I thought I would be, except for still living in this town. I think I saw myself as living somewhere else, somewhere more exciting or something of that sort. I am a dreamer but I am also lazy and err.. timid and somewhat of a coward so I might have disappointed my younger selves there..

I always thought I would be science fiction writer or an archeologist/astronaut/former navy seal/billionaire/adventurer.

Baring that I would settle with being a mythbuster.

Well shoot, according to the AH - all you have to do to be a Navy Seal is TELL people you are a Navy Seal!

MAGDALENA

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Well... with my love of children, passion for acting and literature and history I honestly thought I would be an actress, and a mother... I wanted to be a mother since I was 6 years old!!!

I did study at the National Theatre Drama School and graduated in 1992, but the best roles were in the unpaid amateur (or meagrely paid fringe) theatre, and the standards were high and the experience richly rewarding, so I got jobs and kept trying for proffessional work and did some other stuff on the side... I considered being a nanny too - but it was such a fledgling industry when I left school and there weren't many opportunities to work or study...

I also considered studying history and librarian ship and going into archeology or archival work... but that meant more study and I hated the education system with a passion! I tend to keep doing my own research into topics that interest me... so here I am - almost 40, single, childless, and working as a nanny and planning to work in Europe next year... so some things have worked out and others haven't! I get to play at being a soldier at D*C - so that's kind of like acting... no?

oh... and I just worked out how to make emotes... sorry everyone...

STOWEAWAY

When I was in high school, I thought I would forego college and go fight apartheid in South Africa. Then I saw a story about a civil rights worker getting killed and it finally got through my head that it was a dangerous job (duh!). I'm a huuuge scaredy-cat so that was out of the question.
Since then I've tried on many hats. But none of them fit quite so well as being a mom. So that's now my bliss and everything else is, well, fluid. It comes and goes, things change, but my mommy hat still fits best.

By this point in my life, I wanted to be learning about 3-D animation, so I could one day work for George Lucas at Industrial Light and Magic. I still want to do the 3-D animation, but I want to work for Zoic now. Only problem is, I didn't apply for College until AFTER I graduated, so, I'm going to a community college, that doesn't have ANY of the classes I wanted! So, I'll probably get a Defense Contractor job that I'll end-up hating, and I'll wish I had applied for college earlier, and been starting down the road to working for Zoic.

If I could, I'd go back and do things a bit different, back in my 20's. If I stayed the same as I was then, I'd probably be dead in a ditch somewhere. I decided that maybe seeing the world wasn't so great after I got the utter shite beaten out of me in Tijuana with a barstool.

And now I'm a teacher. Weird, huh?

HIGGINS

For starters, I never saw myself as getting this old. I always wanted to be older, of course, (what kid doesn't?), but I saw myself as lingering in my 20s/30s forever. Who knew that doesn't happen? It's a gip, I tell ya.
As a kid, my ambitions changed every time I read something new. I wanted to be a diplomat after I read Keith Laumer's "Galactic Diplomat" (still one of the best send ups of bureaucratic life ever), I wanted to be a neurosurgeon after I read a medical thriller (whose title escapes me), etc. As much time as I spent in the library, though, I never, ever once thought I would wind up as *dramatic pause* a librarian! But I did, I've been one for the past 18 years (God, where does the time go?), and I LOVE it! It's the best career I never planned on. Heck, it's the best career ever!
My advice? Do what you love to do. And if you're not doing that now, remember, it's not too late to change your life.

REGINAROADIE

It's funny that this thread should pop up on this specific day.

With the exception of wanting to be a fireman when I was in kindergarden, I always wanted to be a filmmaker. There was no doubt in my mind that that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

As for where I wanted to be at this point, I always thought that this would be the year that I graduated from Uni with a film degree and enter the real world. And that for the first few years, I'd be a grip or an electrician on film and tv shows for a while (the film industry is booming in Regina, my adopted hometown) before making the leap into dirt-cheap indie filmmaking and working my way up to a respected filmmaker.

Now, for the longest time, I would be sending in resumes to the various productions going on and never hear anything from it. I had resigned myself into thinking that it would never happen, and was thinking of trying to set up a SCN doc to make as soon as I graduate from University so that I can hit the ground running. But today, I get a call from the key grip of LITTLE MOSQUE ON THE PRAIRIE, saying that I'm on the shortlist of people they're considering for a trainee grip position on the show. This was the last thing I was expecting. I certainly hope I get the job and I'm wondering how to handle the scheduling conflict if I do in fact get it (June is free for me, but the first week of production in August coincides with ym last week of Spanish 110). But the bigger implication is that my cushy life as a uni student is almost over and that the real world is gonna crash in sooner than I expected.

So yeah, I've sort of accomplished what I wanted to be ever since I was a kid, but a little shocked that I'm this close to actually attaining it.

Hey, congrats, reginaroadie. I've heard reviews for the film; I hope you get the job.

As for me, when I was younger, first I thought I would be a writer, then a journalist, then a forensic psychologist, and then a sociologist. Now I'm in college studying to be a librarian, which in my opinion, is still a pretty cool job. So even though I'm not where I expected, I think I'll end up okay.

I hope so too. But for the record, it's not a movie. It's season 2 of a tv show on CBC. It's kind of the CBC's answer to CORNER GAS, which is shot in and around Regina and is the biggest Canadian sitcom EVER. So the CBC picked this up sort of for shock value (the CBC's trying to be more hip for some reason), but the first season inexplicably was shot in Ontario. But they finally made the right decision and now it's being shot here.

What I'm more worried about is if I can do the June block and then take the first week of the August block off so that I can finish my Spanish 110. The last week of class coincides with the first week of shooting for August. Hopefully I can finish off the class so that I won't have to drop it and take it yet again (I've dropped it twice already, so I can't really back out now).

If I can finish Spanish and then go to work on the show, that would be great. But if they say no and I have to be there for when they start shooting, I may have to back out. It's stupid for me to do six weeks of a seven week class, and then drop out at the last minute, then wait an entire year to take it again.

So yes, I am willing to drop a job for my education, but I'm hoping that I can have my cake and eat it too.

I wanted to be a film-maker. I did a Super-8 fourty minute sound film called Superman The Spoof 'round 1980, and even showed it at DC Comics to Jerry Seigel & Joe Schuster, and it was featured on a BBC show called Arena.
My friend actually made it in Hollywood as a stuntman (worked on BUFFY, TOO) & co-ordinator, and got me stuntwork on lots of small films, most recently Toxic Avenger 4.
But in the end, show business was a little too business-y for me, so now I'm a husband and Dad, planning my big graphic novel (SF, with martial arts, of course).

THESOMNAMBULIST

I had quite a few things I wanted to do when I grew up. Wanting to be a stuntman was a huge preoccupation with me for years as a kid and then I went towards wanting to be a director, I had a stab at that in 2000 on a music video. It was ok but not that rewarding and not nearly as enjoyable as what I've been doing for 13 years now, which is a cartoonist. I basically draw all day!

Thing is though because of shows like Buffy, Angel and Firefly I want to create a TV show. Which is what myself and two friends are working on at the mo.

So doing what I wanted - but now have other things I'd like to achieve also.

Hey Deepgirl

Quick update on the job prospect. I just got off the phone with Jeff, the Key Grip on LITTLE MOSQUE, and they've decided to hire someone else for the trainee position.

At least now I know before I go off to Saskatoon for the weekend. And to tell you the truth, I'm kinda glad, since this won't be getting in the way with my Spanish 110. I have to have two languages before I graduate, and I'd rather do it like a band-aid than to draw it out as long as possible. And then after that, it's just Film 400 and 401 and then that's it.

Plus, I still have the whole month of June off. And I do plan on doing a bunch of stuff with a whole month off, one of which could go towards getting me work during and after my last year of Uni.

Oh well.

SAFEAT2ND

My story is remarkable similar to Penguin's. Coming from somewhere inbetween farm country and cottage country Ontario, I went to University because that's what one does after high-school. I'm a 'jack of all trades, master of none' meaning I can do just about anything I wanted to...passably. If only I could apply myself to just one attribute...sigh.

In school I wanted to be a stuntman and a pilot. Always wanted to fly a Spitfire, but being partially colour blind put an end to that dream.

I found I could get by in high-school without doing any real work and maintain an decent average and ultimately end up on the honour roll in my final year. Let me tell you, this does NOT work in University.

Tried out to be a Firefighter but the damned colour blindness did me in yet again. After changing jobs every 3yrs, worked retail, auto sales(too honest to sell cars) then auto service and maintenance, ended up in insurnace as well. Not what I want to do, as I've discovered I reeeeally can't accept the things I cannot change, but it's family business so...

The best job in the world, as stated by Chris and it really surprised me to realize this, is being a dad and husband.

Psstt... Traveler, I have a theory that I'm putting to test, that one is only as old as one thinks they are. A kinda mind over matter thing. That said, they are going to have to drag me off the baseball diamond only when I can't walk anymore No rocking chair for me. But I suppose there will come a time.

You hardly come across as 'old' to me.

CHRISMOORHEAD

I found a project from 4th or 5th grade not too long ago. It was supposed to be done on a hostorical American figure. Everyone else picked presidents and civil rights leaders. I picked George fucking Patton.

Being a weak, sickly child gave me a huge inferiority complex. I wanted to be strong and powerful like a military hero. I eventually had to come to terms with the fact that I was not physically built for this line of work; I'm about as far from an alpha-male, competitor or an over-acheiver as you can get. Honestly, it's been the source of a lot of friction between myself and the guys that I work with. Alpha-males can smell the stink of a life-long reject from a mile away, and they're not quick to change their opinion about those types. It doesn't matter if you can outdo them at PT, shooting, combatives, etc. They KNOW you didn't play football in high school and that's all that matters. Being a virgin doesn't help, either.

But I wouldn't trade it for nuthin. This life bucked me off about 2 years ago, and I got back on it. I been shot, blown up, stabbed and beaten, and I'm still here. I'll rip it's fucking head off before I let it toss me aside again.

I am the Infantry.
I am my country's strength in war,
her deterrent in peace.
I am the heart of the fight-
wherever, whenever.
I carry America's faith and honor
against her enemies.
I am the Queen of Battle.

I am what my country expects me to be-
the best trained soldier in the world.
In the race for victory,
I am swift, determined, and courageous,
armed with a fierce will to win.

Never will I fail my country's trust.
Always I fight on-
through the foe,
to the objective,
to triumph over all.
If necessary, I fight to my death.

By my steadfast courage,
I have won 200 years of freedom.
I yield not-
to weakness,
to hunger,
to cowardice,
to fatigue,
to superior odds,
for I am mentally tough, physically strong,
and morally straight.

I forsake not-
my country,
my mission,
my comrades,
my sacred duty.

I am relentless.
I am always there,
now and forever.

I AM THE INFANTRY!
FOLLOW ME!

Well, at this point in my life, i thought that I would be a little closer to muscle bound and six pack abs, and farther away from girlfriendless. But hay, what can a guy still in highschool expect. Course I never took the time to get to know half the people in my classes. At the school dances I do get people walking up to me and asking if I want to dance with them, but that's usualy after some sort of coment like "you look so lonely standing all by yourself."

But otherwise things are great, I passed the wssl and am looking forward to summer

IF ONE MUST FAIL, FAIL SPECTACULARLY

For those that think they may know me, heres a hint:
1) I almost always have on shorts and a hawiian shirt.
2) my yearbook picture this year looks nothing like me. (but does anybody's)
3) I do archery and
4)I flip a pen around alot

SHIMAUMA

When I was interviewing about 4 years ago for a position as assistant manager for an online webstore, the boss asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up...I sat up quick with big bright eyes and piped, "I want to be a forest ranger!" Not 'cause I'm a whiny environmentalist, mind you, but I like the idea of walking in the woods all day as a job, maybe getting to weild a chainsaw on occasion, if a tree was down across a trail, or something similiar.

I'm realistic enough to know that I'd have to be somebody's cousin/sister/aunt to get a job like that as well as register demoncrap to vote, so I settled for the Air Force, and then went into customer service for various electronics companies throughout my life.

So here I am, 37, living in about the crappiest, hippiest, blue state in the USA and what I really wanted to know is; WHERE ARE THE GORRAM FLYING CARS?!?!?!?

Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. ~ Psalm 144:1

EXOTICK

I've never really known what I want to be. Of course when I was younger I wanted to be all these grand things; actress, pilot, jedi, but I never seriously knew what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I do remember when I was 16 in class one day we had to write up a little blurb about where we thought we'd be in 10 years. So there I was, totally clueless about what the real world entailed, I wrote that I'd have a job (some generic job), I'd be married and have kids.

What a joke, here I'm 29, single, no kids and I work to pay my mortgage on my itty bitty condo.

This quote describes perfectly what I think on a daily basis; "Sometimes I feel frozen in the expectation of a remarkable destiny that might still materialize".

There's gotta be more to life than this.

**I edited that to fit this blog*
