I saw the post for V for Vendetta in there and since I'd rank that in my top 5 movies of all time, I thought, why not start a top 5 movie thread. It's probably been done before, countless times, so if it has feel free to ignore this post. No haters allowed.

Here we go...

1) Equilibrium - Anyone who knows me here, probably know's why.

2) Donnie Darko - Thought I got it the first time around. Every time I watch it, I just have more questions. I think Donnie is my movie-land counterpart. I can't imagine I've ever associated myself with a movie character more than Donnie. Plus that version of "Mad World" by Jules is one of the best songs ever performed, IMO.

3) eXistenZ - I'm pretty sure that I got this one down now. This one is a hell of a ride. I recommend partaking in your drug of choice while watching this one. Don't do drugs kids, and stay in school.

4) V for Vendetta - Yeah, if you know me, this doesn't suprise you either.

5) Mulholland Drive - All I gotta say is what the F man. I've never even pretended to get this one. I love watching it about once a year and fooling myself beforehand into thinking that this is the time that I'll actually figure it out. My best friend is confident that Lynch made this movie with the intent of creating an unsolvable riddle that will keep people like me guessing for the rest of their lives. Thanks for that Lynch. RIP my man. (Definately not for the kiddies, this one).

And, as a bonus, the movie that puts how really good I have things and gives me perspective when I start spending too much time in my own self pity pot...

I'll always entertain a Top Five/Ten/Hundred film thread. What's weird with me is that every time I make a list, the outcome is always different.

So here's mine (for the moment):

5) BRAZIL - Terry Gilliam actually made a movie about red tape. Great sci-fi. Imaginative as hell, and funny to boot.

4) EVIL DEAD 2 - Best horror film ever? Yeah. Funniest horror film ever? Definitely. Bruce Campbell + Sam Raimi = classic. (Happy birthday, Bruce!)

3) CHASING AMY - Kevin Smith's best film, also one of the few movies where I don't want to punch Ben Affleck. And that's saying something.

2) THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - Best. Sci-fi. Ever.

1) TIE: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK / INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE - For my money, the most entertaining films anybody has ever made. Let's hope Spielberg makes Indy 4 at least half as good as Raiders and Last Crusade.

Nice list Orpheus. Enjoyed them all except for Brazil. I always meant to check that one out. I'm a big Monty Python fan, even though most of my friends just don't get the humor. I'll have to check it out now that you reminded me. My favorite Smith flick was the original Clerks, just because I'd never seen anything like it at the time and I was 20 years old with not a clue about what I wanted to do with life (not that I've figured any of that out yet either).

The top 5 movie thing must be played out in here. Thought there'd be more responses.

That's a very interesting list. I like your reasoning behind Mulholland Drive. So many people hate that film because they can't explain it. So what? Big deal. It's still enjoyable.

OK my top five:

SERENITY
City Of The Lost Children
Jean De Flourette/Manon De Source (can I count these as one as they're parts I & II
Wages Of Fear (1951)
Edward Scissorhands.

Yeah, I first saw Clerks when I was 15, where I was a poor high school kid in search of some kind of direction. Then I saw Clerks and BAM: Film school. I owe the last five years of my life to Clerks (as sad as that is), but then I'd have never found Clerks if not for Mallrats, which was the first of Kevin's films I'd ever seen. So I appreciate all three for different reasons.

And just because why not, here's another top 5. Here's my top 6 - 10.

10) THE TASTE OF TEA - The latest addition to my list of favorites. It's a Japanese film about the life of a family that lives in the mountains outside of Tokyo. No real plot to speak of, just life. It's a very soothing watch.

9) GOLDENEYE - My very favorite Bond film, if only because of the way it reinvents the character in light of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The only one Pierce Brosnan was ever any good in, plus it introduced me to the gorgeous Famke Janssen.

8) FORGOTTEN SILVER - Peter Jackson's documentary about Colin McKenzie, New Zealand's long lost filmmaking pioneer. Even after Lord of the Rings and King Kong, Jackson hasn't made a film better than this.

7) BACK TO THE FUTURE - What can I say? I want a DeLorean. Genius setup, equally great follow-through. I, personally, think this one's aged very nicely.

6) SHAUN OF THE DEAD - I'd dare say this is a better zombie film than Dawn of the Dead. It's got a brilliant script, a good emotional center, and Simon Pegg/Nick Frost prove that they deserve to be world famous.

I don’t know how to rank them, so in no particular order here are five of my favorites (Serenity has been excluded from consideration, because it's obvious):

Raiders of the Lost Arc.

Empire Strikes Back.

The Chronicles of Narnia

Bridge to Terrabithia

Jurassic Park

And while we’re on the topic of good movies, I really like the new Nancy Drew movie. I don’t know if it’s one of my all time favorites, but it’s definitely a good one. It’s refreshing to see a young heroine who can be independent, smart and passionate about her work, without being trendy, smutty or brazen.

Agreed.

I see you love the Darko too. And how could I forget The Cube? That might beat out one of my original top 5 if I thought about it enough. Heard from a friend that Pi would be right up my alley too, but I've never seen it yet.

You guys are all giving me great ideas for movies I gotta rent and watch again or for the first time.

Well crap. I've never tried to narrow it down before. I'm gonna have to go away and do some thinking about this. That being said, I also love Equilibrium and Donnie Darko, though I think the director of the later is insane (I had that movie pretty much down untill I listened to his commentary on the SE). Must go think about this now.

I missed that one (TMNT 2007)... I haven't seen a movie in the theatre since the last Lord of the Rings, I believe. Finally getting my hands on a 51" TV makes waiting a couple of months to watch a movie over paying high prices and dealing with idiots with cellphones pretty much a no brainer. Did it make it to DVD yet? I know that was on my to do list, but out of sight, out of mind.

EDIT: Yes, I know.... I could just Google it, and I should, but I'm old school personable.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

It's such an impossible list for me because I like different movies for different reasons. There's the comedy side, with the High 4 - Caddyshack, Animal House and M.P.& the Holy Grail, Blues Brothers.

Then there's the macho side of me which loves movies like Patton, A Bridge Too Far and The Battle of the Bulge.

And also there are westerns, which included The Outlaw Josey Whales, High Plains Drifter, Tombstone, and to a lesser extent...Silverado.

Classics, like Rear Window, It's a Wonderful Life, and The Man who shot Liberty Valance. ( Jimmy Stewart in all of 'em...huh. )

And of course, SciFi...where to begin ? Alien, Terminator, LTOR: Fellowship of the Ring, The Empire Strikes Back.

And then there are just persoanl favorites, The Usual Suspects, L.A. Confidential, Chariots of Fire , Rocky, Splash, The Godfather, and yes...Jurassic Park.

Sorry, that's the best I can do. Limit to 5 ? Not possible.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Heat

The Hospital

Naked

NEEDY

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

I love threads like these, until I realise how much I love movies, and that its almost impossible for me to narrow them down
I mean the star wars movies add up to five on their own! (I dont count phantom menace)
And the LOTR trilogy is as long as five movies!

So, in a way to defeat this impossible enemy (namely, a top 5 list), I've just decided to list 5 of my "Default" movies - movies I love to bits that I can watch no matter what mood I'm in

In no particular order:

Donnie Darko
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Phantom of the Opera
Forrest Gump
Spider-man

(There's LOADS more I could list, but I'm trying not to cheat)
If ever I'm in doubt what to watch, normally one of these will do the trick

ps. Cube - is it really that good?
I've never seen it, but I've seen it for sale a few times (saw it on its own for £6, or in a box set with all 3 Cube movies for £10)
Is it worth buying? (and is the sequel/prequel good enough too to justify buying the boxset?)

My favourite movies:

Score another for Darko...uuugh... lol.... sweet.

Cube is freaking awesome man. I'd buy it if you couldn't rent it. I got lucky and bought it about 5 years ago on VHS at a garage sale for a buck. Probably should have been on my top five. Thanks to Whimsicalinthebrainpan for bringing that one up.

I never saw the sequel though. Never heard anything good or bad about it, but that means next to nothing when it's a sequel to a low budget (Lionsgate?)film. Better to ask someone who knows about that.

Hey Whimisical... I got Pi. I'm going to watch it this weekend finally. (My weekends sometimes start on Sunday, lol) I knew there was good reason to start this thread. I'll let you know what I think....

All good films. The only one I haven't seen is Pieces of April. Since it's on your list of favorites I assume you recomend it? OH! And I forgot to put Equilibrium in my honorable mentions list.

As to Dark City, awesome! I new other people had to like it too. And it's nice to see Rufus Sewel as the hero for a change. Don't get me wrong, he's great as the arrogant, asshole, evil guy but the man has range and it's good to see it.

WHOOPS

What a tough choice i hate people asking me these questions because i got so many but i will give it a go;

1 V for Vendetta

2 Dark City

3 Italian Job - the original not the sucky re-make.

4 Cube, Cube 2 and Cube 3 - i know theres three there but oh well. I love how you never find out whos behind the "cube".

5 Shaun Of The Dead - Nich Frost and Simon Pegg are both just awsome.

Cant believe i forgot about Monty Pyhton and the Quest for the Holy Grail. i think that will have to be changed with Shaun of the Dead

Whims does sound a bit more formal.

I've had signal trouble lately JQ. You can't stop it but it can be interrupted.

Heathers. Best movie of the 80's, and still criminally underrated. Daniel Waters has a new film, (Sex, and Death 101) that comes out in the fall, and I can't wait.

Aliens. When James Cameron was an absolute bad ass. Man I miss him.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Steven Spielberg wrote and directed this amazing film. He really had talent, now he makes hack movies with big stars. Sad indeed.

Housekeeping. Why this isn't out on dvd, I have no idea. WTF? Sony would rather piss themselves than release a good film on dvd.

American Movie. The best documentary ever. If you don't like it, you should stop watching movies. I'm not kidding

Hey Whims.... never got around to watching PI yet. I started it, but I got ripped away by real life and haven't been able to get back to it. What I saw was real interesting though. Imma watch it this weekend and I'll let you know what I think.

Thanks everybody. Great idea for movies here. This post is more for me than anyone else so I got em all on one place, but my lists based off responses here would be.

TOP THAT I'VE SEEN:

Equilibrium
Donnie Darko
eXistenZ
V for Vendetta
Mulholland Drive
The Cube
Clerks
The Usual Suspects
The Boondock Saints
Very Bad Things
Bully
Monty Pyton and the Quest for the Holy Grail
The Life of Brian
Glengary Glen Ross
L.A. Confidential
American Beauty
Swiming With Sharks (Can you tell I'm a huge Spacey Fan Yet?)
Total Recall
Paycheck
Imposter
Minority Report
A Scanner Darkly (Big PKD fan too, though not a big Blade Runner fan and the movie Screamers totally sucked, mainly because they Hollywooded it up, especially at the ending, and totally destroyed the PKD vibe.)
Tombstone & Wyatt Earp
Silverado
Evil Dead 2
Army of Darkness
12 Angry Men
The Deer Hunter
Terminator II
Election
Pitch Black
The Matrix
Aliens
The Labyrinth
The Dark Crystal
Superman II
Aliens
Casino Royale
Empire Strikes Back & The First half of Jedi
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Back to the Future
Shaun of the Dead
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Sin City
Starship Troopers
Animal House
Caddyshack
Kingpin
Groundhog Day (This was a comical take on a short movie I saw on cable when I was about 8 years old called 12:01 PM. In that movie, a busy New York business man lived the same hour over and over again an infinite amount of time. Every one starts out at 12:01 PM when he was in the middle of a busy intersection crossing the street. As bad as "I Got You Babe" is to have to wake up to every morning, I think this guy had it infinately worse than Bill Murray. Really creepy movie and you should check it out if you get a chance. I don't even know if it's available anywhere now. ***Not to be confused with the movie 12:01 featuring Jonathan Silverman. Ima add that one to my must see list, as I haven't seen it. Sounds like the same type of premise.

&

Found it. It was only released on a compilation of shorts in the UK. Do yourself a favor and don't read anything online about this movie if you're going to see it. Don't want to ruin any more about it than I already spoiled).
)

The Truman Show (Although it was a direct ripoff of an episode of the colorized 80's version of Twilight Zone where the cable guy lets a guy know that his entire life has been a TV show and shows him some of the hidden cameras as proof. When his wife comes home, he tells her that he won't be a part of it anymore. She takes the kids and leaves him. I can't remember how it ended, but I was deathly afraid for years that there were cameras everywhere watching me. Funny how there weren't then, but today I might show up smoking a cigarette on Google Street View at any time of day. http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/technology_internetcritic/2007
/06/google_street_v.html
Look up ""Kevin Bankston"" smoking" on Yahoo and you'll get 1,290 hits. Poor guy... his family didn't know he smoked till he was outed by Google, and now the whole world knows. Really creepy thing is, he was caught on cam smoking years ago by a smillar, yet much smaller Amazon cam)

ONES I'D MOST LIKE TO SEE, BUT HAVEN'T YET:

Dark City - Saw part of this and it was freaking awesome. I can't believe I never rented it yet to see it all.
The Ninth Gate - What I saw of this movie was also great.
City of the Lost Children - Couldn't for the life of me place where I'd heard of this until I realized that I had played a Playstation game based on it years ago. It was uber creepy, so I'm looking forward to watching this too.
PI - I'll let you know Whimsy.
The Chronicles of Narnia - I loved the Lion Witch & Waradrobe when I read it in school.
Twin Peaks (Movie and TV show) - Love the Lynch... somehow never got around to it.

MOVIES I CAN'T BELIEVE I HAD TO SIT THROUGH BUT ARE ON THIS LIST:

Just one.... 2001: A Space Odyssey. I knew somebody had to like it Chris, since it's rated so high on the best movies ever created. I've never met one of those people until now. Personally, it's top on my list of the most suicidally boring movies ever created. Even my film teacher that made us sit through it told us that he's seen it every class that he taught and he absolutely hates it. Then he told me when Kuberick did a screening for the movie, actor Rock Hudson stood up and said "I don't get it!" and walked out of the theautre. I didn't have that problem. I got the movie, I just think that it was an Outer Limits episode that was stretched just about to the outer limits it could have been stretched before people would not go see it simply because of the sheer length. To me, actually watching it is like tasting the Malcom-Macdowell-Clockwork-Orange-Treatment.

I'm just a youngin' though..... If I remember right, the movie came out a year before the moon landing actually happened. By the time I actually saw it, there were a lot of people saying the moon landing itself was created in a Hollywood basement.

MJOLNIR

Okay here goes kids...

1. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
The film version with Tim Roth and Gary Oldman is the funniest thing I've ever seen. It' actually a play written by Tom Stoppard and if you ever have a chance to see it, do. It's an existential look at the lives of Hamlet's two best friends and their general outlook on their rather poinless existence: witty as hell.

2. Soylent Green
Go back to your roots people! Soylent Green is one of the best Sci Fi movies ever made. It stars Charlton Heston. I can't really say too much without giving away the good parts, but everyone should really see it.

3. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
I was so surprised as to just how great this movie was. I just love Val Kilmer, and he has some of the best lines ever in this movie. It's kind of loosly based off the Mike Shayne mystery novels, but a whole lot more fun.

4. Logan's Run
Another classic Sci Fi flick. This one has Michael York (he played Basil in Austin Powers.) He plays Logan 5, a sandman, whose job it is to ensure that anyone who is thirty is destroyed on last day at the ritual of carnival. But when it's his turn to renew he decides to run for sanctuary with his new scantily clad friend Jessica,...er just watch it.

5. My Best Friend Is A Vampire
My favorite 80's movie. This one stars Robert Sean Leonard (Wilson from House) as a teen who's finds out that he's been turned into a vampire. Rene Auberjonois (ya know Odo) plays his vampy mentor. The whole thing is just fun.

Hey here's a completely unknown film everyone should see and enjoy..
Splitting Heirs- Eric Idle wrote it and stars along with John Cleese, Rick Moranis, Sadie Frost, and a very naked and new to the movies Catherine Zeta Jones...it's riot
