Sucked is a little demeaning for such a film. While I'm not a fan of it myself, I'd at least say it has some very strong points to it that deserve more consideration than just sucked.

Rutger Hauer for starters.
It's ambiguity I think is very interesting. It is brave for a director to let the audience decide for themselves about the ending. I liked that.
The set design is sublime. Possibly one of the most influential imaginings of the future ever. Even our beloved Firefly/Serenity draws heavily from it's visuals. You can't ignore that.
The synthesizer score is clever, operatic, and epic in it's composition and that is something which really hadn't been achieved before. Most synthesizer scores tended to sound like 'Ross' let loose with a schizophrenic casio.
However for me personally it is a little overrated and somewhat held down by a plodding narrative that Scott seems hell bent on layering with unnecessarily ostentatious photography.

I've always liked the movie ever since I saw it in the theater in 1982. Subsequent viewings have diminished my appreciation of it however, as it is a completely illogical mess, and really makes no sense at all.

Blade Runner rocks, because 'onslaught' is one word

They may think their sins are original, but for the most part they are petty and repetitive.

Got room for one more?

I maybe one of the few sci-fi geeks out there that doesn't go orgasmic whenever I hear about BLADE RUNNER. I've seen it a few times, and maybe the re-release in theaters or the 3 disc DVD of it will broaden my horizons and make me a fan, but from my perspective, the whole movie is just cold. Yes, it's visually stunning and revolutionary and philosophical and the most faithful adapt of a Phillip K. Dick story, but I found the whole thing just to be cold, barren and emotionless. Not a single bit of heart or spirit in the entire film. And who really cares if Decker is a robot? That was supposed to be the big mystery of the movie and all that, but it's not a mystery if you don't give a shit about it.

I guess that's why I'm not too big a fan of cyberpunk or stuff that supposedly redefines science fiction, because a lot of it just seems to lack any heart or emotion. BLADE RUNNER, THE MATRIX, the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. These supposedly great pieces of work that's all intellectual and no heart whatsoever. It's hard to root for your characters when they're as cold and emotionless as the machines they're fighting.

Blade Runner comes down to this one statement.

"I want more life, fucker."

I bought the first release and still have it. Amazing how many times you can watch a VHS tape before it implodes. I figure it still has a few more viewings before it finally goes to the magnetic tape heaven that awaits it.

I like the tribute to Bradbury by naming one of the buildings after him.

Found this in youtube.

Was the Bradbury Building named after Ray? It sure has been used in a lot of sci-fi presentations, ie...OL's Demon With A Glass Hand, and a few Twilight Zones, all decades before Blade Runner....AND... for those who are really obsessed with this movie I would ask some simple questions...
Why the need for Blade Runner Units in the first place?
The police know what they all look like & who they are, so why not send the SWAT Team after them? Why just one guy?
How many frikkin' murderous mutinies in space would be tolerated before they just tell Tyrell to stop making them?
Why did Holden Voight-Kampf Leon?..He knows he's a renegade repilicant from the Captain's hologram file.
Why V-K anybody?
Why even build the stupid thing? The authorities know all the replicants.
A 4 year lifespan is hardly an approved " safeguard", so how could the stupid things have gotten made knowing their enormous potential destructive capabilities? Just a few of my l'il probs with this flick...many others as well.

Wow, and here I thought I was the only one who wasn't enamoured with this film. I did like watching it, and for a sci-fi flick it was entertaining, but like others I don't GET the hype. (sorry Chris, I knew as soon as you saw this you'd comment, which is what the instigator of this thread expected maybe? Bad girl, good one though)

Funny, I'd rather watch "Flash Gordon" (the movie) Or "Adventures in the Forbidden Zone." before I watch this again. It's just..... depressing. Just me.

Hello Jongsstraw:

I first saw that building, called the Bradbury in this movie, in the film noir "Double Indemnity", staring Fred McMurry and Barbara Stanwyck. So this building has been around a long time. I am sure I have seen it other movies, just can't recall them. But it stood out in "BladeRunner". So I am not surprized you recognise it. Gotta love the interior with all the iron work open like that. Iwas at a party in Chicago, where you could lean over the rail on the third floor and look down at the dance floor that was an insane mosh pit. Did I spell that right. Better stop here I am getting nostalgic.

As I stated in an earlier post today, I saw Blade Runner in the theater a few times when it came out. For me it was highly anticipated because I remember reading a preview in Starlog along with photos of Syd Mead's set creations. I've probably seen Blade Runner 75 times in my life, and despite its' serious plot flaws, it remains a cherished classic, with some of the most interesting and moving scenes in film history.

A lot of movies have serious flaws. The one I think of as the most recent is "Memento". I have seen a program about the type of brain damage the lead character suffers from and he could not have funtioned at the level protrayed in this film.

But the story grabbed me and the scenes twist such a torrid tale. I know in my mind it could never happen, but it is so well done, I just rate it as one of the best movies to come out in recent years.

It is one of my guilty pleasures.

Ooooohhhhh.... maybe you should have put that under the "Unpopular Opinions" thread.

I kinda have to agree with you there though. I'm not a huge fan. It's kinda like the original Dune for me. I want to like it, I've really tried hard to like it... but something about it just doesn't do it for me. Don't think I'd go as far as to say it sucked though.

Congrats FMF..... I think you've finally uncovered something that we don't compeletely disagree on.
