Hey All

In exactly one week, the final book of the HARRY POTTER series will be released. Figured that now would be a good time to start a thread about the HARRY POTTER books, how we got into them and what you'd like to see in the final book. I only ask that it doesn't devolve into a "will Harry die?" thread. I've seen plenty of ink on that already and don't really want to focus on that.

So of the various things that have been mentioned in the book and unresolved plotlines and such, what do you want to see in the book?

I wouldn't mind seeing a little pay-off with the Dursleys. J.K. mentioned something about Aunt Petunia in previous interviews, and I think it would be cool if maybe in the first chapter or so when Harry turns 17 and leaves #4 Privet Drive that Petunia reveals to him that maybe she herself has magical powers and that she's been living in denial for decades and that she wants Harry to avenge her sister's death. Or something along the lines of that. I'm a big fan of seeing characters that for the longest time are just one note characters suddenly show another dimension at the last minute so as to give them more relevance. And for six books, the Dursley's have been rather one dimensional. Now Vernon and Dudley I could care less about, but Petunia I think should have that last minute change of heart.

The Weasley wedding should also be in the beginning if only to bring some levity and humor to quite possibly the darkest book of the series.

Draco Malfoy should get another bathroom moment. My favorite part of HALF-BLOOD PRINCE was when Harry accidentally stumbles upon Draco in the bathroom with Moaning Myrtle crying by a sink over what he has to do for his family and Voldemort. After five books of "Potter this" and "Potter that", he finally shows another side to him. So I'd like to see him conflicted in that maybe he isn't as willing to serve the Dark Lord as he says he is.

Neville should kick some ass, obviously.

I'm of the mindset that Dumbledore wanted Snape to kill him so that he'd be the ultimate rat in Voldemort's gang. So I'm hoping that pays off and Snape does something heroic near the end.

With Harry, I imagine he'd want to go at it alone at this point. But I think it would be powerful if more than just the ones who came with him to the Ministry in ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. I think at this point, there should be an ultimate battle royale. I know it's cliche for every fantasy movie to end LORD OF THE RINGS style with a massive battle with an army of thousands charging, but I think in this case it has earned it.

And maybe, just maybe, both Harry and Voldemort will go down. Everyone assumes it's one or the other.

So who wants to see what in the last book. And don't say "Harry Live!!" all at once.

I wouldn't be horribly surprised if something like that happens, maybe Harry's parents sent Petunia some things "just in case" that she kept secret from Vernon and she'll finally work up the guts to give them to Harry or something like that.

My guess? He'll choke at the last minute and fail just like with Dumbledore, he won't turn on Voldemort so much as just be too weak to finish the job.

I wouldn't be surprised, I think he's gonna have a raging berserker moment when all seems lost.

I can see that but I hope not or at least I hope he still eats it. I'd rather he be a villain to the end but I suspect that Harry will mortally wound him and he will then pass on some critical information and apologize or something before he dies. I hope she doesn't pull that crap but that's what I'm guessing.

Disagree, at the very least he'll keep Ron and Hermione with him and quite likely he'll call on the DA when the going gets too tough. They showed their value and loyalty at the end of HBP.

Oh, there will be, there will be. This is going to be interesting to see when they do the movie, the last movie may have to be a two parter since they'll probably have oodles of relevant stuff to go through.

I seriously doubt this, first off I think she knows that if she kills Harry she will never be safe no matter where she goes or how much money she has. She could move to Mars and someone would spend their entire life building a missile to shoot at her. Second, this is (supposedly) the end of the regular series but there will be spin-offs and the like probably done by other authors and the world won't have the appeal without Harry. I'm not even that big of a fan of Harry the character but I probably wouldn't keep reading without Harry.

What I want:

I want Snape to still be evil and be bumped off (or at least have the crap beaten out of him) by Harry, by evil I don't mean that he has to side with Voldemort but rather that he is still deserving of having his ass kicked even if he isn't with Voldemort.

I want lots and lots of ass-kicking, we aren't going to be kicking around Hogwarts trying to dodge teachers and win the House Cup so lets see some serious action not just at the end but at many points in between this time. After all, this is war now.

I want the kids to win the day, not just the Scooby Gang but a bunch of the other kids from Hogwarts too, I want them to be the ones to save the day while the adults are either unable or unwilling to do the job.

I want Malfoy to be humiliated and broken but not killed.

I want the final showdown between Harry and Voldemort to be between Harry and Voldemort, instead of being a group effort by half the wizarding world.

And finally I want Sirius to come back.

And I want the paperback to come out right after the hardback since I'm not paying $18 (much less the retail price of $35) for the hardcover.

Okay, my thoughts: If Harry dies, it'll be about a third of the way in. I WANT to see the apocalypse. If Voldemort (heh, giggle. You should see the translation of his name in French. It's funny. Maybe I'll Babel Fish it for you) dies, I see a three-quarter placement. And listening to Steve and D.C. (a morning show we get in our area), I heard a neat idea: what if she ends it with a half-finished sentence, and smears all over the page?

Talk about it: she's just about guaranteed a half-billion sales from this book. They're going to continue the movie saga - this book could SUCK and she'd make huge money off it. (Clarification: "half-billion sales" is farce. I don't know the numbers, I don't claim to know the numbers. I'm KIDDING. I only have to make this clarification 'cos there are people who don't understand this whole 'I can say things in jest' thing.)

And a plea: can we keep this spoiler-free, please? If you have a sudden, overwhelming urge to run in and say, in huge, red text, who dies, what happens, and the like, do so in a spoiler tag, without the size and color formatting. Please. Honestly. They can start a spoiler-fied thread on it later. (On a more fun note, I know someone who's in England for the release. They had their picture taken at platform 9 and 3/4, too. *grin*)

May not be smart, and it may not please you, but you're definitely gonna see what I have to say.
Put this in your sig if you had a favorite show that may have been named Firefly and was canceled by FOX.

Voldemort dies. Harry Potter lives.

I think Snape is good. I think Dumbledore and Snape had it planned all along. I think he might have been in love with Lilly . I'm not sure that Dumbledore is dead and I have hopes for Sirius as well.

Kretcher will find out where Snape and Malfoy and Voldemort are.

I also think Peter Pettigew will play an important part. Dumbledore said that by saving his life, Peter now owes him. I feel he might play a role similiar to Gollum in Lord of the Rings.

I think the 2 characters that die are Voldemort and Snape.

My predictions:

1. Dumbledore will be back, he is the Phoenix
2. Draco isn't all bad and may be fully redemed
3. Snape is good damn it
4. Percy will be revealed as a member of the Order who has had the hardest job of all by having had to alienate his whole family for years
5. RB's horcrux is the locket that Kretchur has
6. Harry will die - best way to ensure the series ends and people don't bug her too much to write more.
7. Nevill will turn out to be a big damn hero and with luck he will kill Bellatrix

That's all I have right off the top of my head

Oh and if any of you are interested I have a Harry Potter filter going on my Live Journal. I welcome all comers for discussion there. Just friend me - I'm madamruppy there too - and tell me you want the HP filter. I will be discussing the book as I read it, but always under a cut and I'll list what chapters I'm up to.

I'll prolly be lynched for sayin it, but yannow, I kinda wanna see harry bite it, and the rest of the DA realize they can't rely on a hero figure to save them and thus have to sort the business themselves, and then see them struggle to do so, making the tough calls, hard decisions and sacrifices such a thing always takes - interesting storytelling that would be, but since it's not hollywood "formula", I figure that ain't gonna happen.

That bein said, I'd really love to see Mad-Eye's moment of final glory, as he goes down swinging against the death eaters, a proper capstone moment to a long and distinguished career.

And just freakin once, I'd like to see ole Minerva lose her temper and have at these goony ole bastards, gimme some weaponised transfiguration to mentally chew on, feed my imagination a little here.

Snape is no doubt gonna cack it, but it'd be nice if it came a bit clearer that much if not all of his criticism of Harry, buried in snark that it was, was justified and usefully constructive, cause it's been a recurring theme that rather than trying to build him up, Snape always held up Harry's flaws and rubbed them in his face, forcing him to face them and maybe do something about em - something Potter usually ignored.

Wouldn't mind seeing Trelawney and Bane edge the Centaurs against old Moldy-Voldy either.

And laugh if you must, I'd just totally love to see some heroic moment on behalf of.... Argus Filch & Ms. Norris - he might like jealousy yanking the students chains, but I suspect deep in his heart he has a great pride and affection in the student body.

So, there's my wish list, doubt i'll get much of it, but there it is.

Oooh I like those. JK has said that she doesn't want to continue with Harry past this book so if she kills him that would be a very good way to keep people from bugging her about it.

I like the idea that Snape has been trying to help Harry all along, in his own special way. That would be really cool.

Filch the Hero - yeah I could get behind that as well.

Very good ideas all!

Okay, my few galleons' worth:

1. RAB was Regulus Black, and the real Horcrux is in that display case at No 12 (re-read the chapter in OoP)

2. Zachariah Smith will play some part - after all, the Cup that is the Hufflepuff emblem was nicked from Hepzibah Smith.

3. There has to be some Ravenclaw presence in the final punch-up. Probably Luna. But the Ravenclaw item will probably be a staff or a wand, if we are going by the Major Arcana/Great Treasures theme - sword, cup... However, a mate of mine reckons on it being a quill or something.

4. Peter Pettigrew has a silver hand. Remus Lupin has a furry little problem. The last two Marauders - it won't be pretty, is all I'm saying.

5. Percy. Asshole. Hopefully, gets a clue. Or alternatively, buys the farm.

6. Neville gets to beat the crap out of Draco's Mad Aunty Bella.

7. Godric's Hollow will be significant. I don't think the name is a coincidence.

I could go on. I've been a diehard Pothead since the first book. And i'm in the UK, so I should get my copy in about 16 hours...

I think before he dies, Snape will play a key role in helping to defeat Voldemort -- not because he is "good" (nor "evil"), but for his own (mercenary) reasons. That would be cool, as he would then have been responsible for the deaths of the two greatest wizards of his time.
