Hey

A couple of weeks ago, I finally bought a Blu-Ray player in Edmonton to go along with the new stand, speakers and 46 inch LCD flatscreen tv Matt bought. All I gotta say is that it is awesome. I haven't really watched any of the Blu-Ray title I got, but I've been getting through HEROES and THE OFFICE, and it is amazing to see the 1080p upgrade that the player does. How it makes even regular DVD's look absolutely amazing.

The title's that I have so far are SUPERMAN RETURNS, THE FOUNTAIN, THE DESCENT and PHONE BOOTH. And I'm waiting on THE LAST WALTZ (this is the one I'm most excited about), BLAZING SADDLES and BABEL to arrive. My brother so far has only BLACK HAWK DOWN and (ugh) SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW and he's waiting on (ugh, ugh) STEALTH and PEARL HARBOR.

Already I'm eyeing a bunch of other Blu-Ray titles to be out by the end of the year so that I can replace some of my regular DVD's. It's going to cut down on so much space on my shelves. I don't care too much about the bonehead decision of Paramount switching over to HD-DVD only since I don't have many Paramount or Dreamworks titles in my collection. But I am still pissed that Universal is still HD-DVD only, since there's a ton of Universal titles I'd like to see in Blu-Ray (SERENITY being at the top of the list).

So who here has gone Blu? And what titles do you have so far?

Blu-Ray is gonna go the way of Beta.....Already a good product out there that no one wants to replace AGAIN. With the availability of DVD Upscaling players at a fraction of the price, Blu Ray is a dying item before it gets out of the gates. Those that bought the PS3 for this player got taken for a ride.....considering Sony knew the technology wasn't going to take before it was marketed. It's ok though....the Blu-Ray discs will look great next to the Lazerdiscs and 8-Tracks.

......I brought the Grenades.

My bet is on HD, if only because "High Definition" is easier to understand than "Blue Ray".

I have a 46' LCD 1080p, a PS3 blu-ray, an up-convert DVD player, and HDMI cables. The up-convert will only go upto 720p which is great and is what you get from most HD cable or satellite boxes. The Blu-ray at 1080p is much better and I have played Blackhawk Down on my upconvert with a regular DVD and I rented the Blu-ray version and there is a significant difference.

Also, I have heard from some people at Blockbuster and they say that most stores will only be carrying new Blu-rays and will stop stocking HD-DVD's.

Blu-ray is winning and HD is here to stay. 1080 is only the tip of the iceberg as our eyes can see at 4000 to 5000 so I've heard.

Keep Flying.

Idnit though!
Sorry about the URL... I guess the exclamation point didn't feel like turning yellow.

As for the format wars, I can hardly wait to see this one...

Holographic Versatile Disc - Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc

3.9 terabytes on a single disc!!!

Quote:

Storage capacity in context

It has been estimated that the books in the U.S. Library of Congress, one of the largest libraries in the world, would contain a total of about 20 terabytes if scanned in text format. Not including images from the books, the content could be stored with capacity to spare on six 3.9 TB discs.

• At 15 meter resolution and 32-bit color (about the resolution found in unpopulated areas on Google Earth), a map of the land masses of Earth would occupy just over 2 TB.

• Using MPEG4 ASP encoding, a 3.9 TB HVD could hold 4,600–11,900 hours of video—just over one year of uninterrupted video at usual encoding rates.

• Using typical satellite radio encoding (CT-aacPlus at 40 kbit/s), a 3.9 TB HVD could hold over 26.5 years of uninterrupted stereo audio.

My computer at home only has .9 terabytes for a hard drive. Well actually it is three hard drives which are ~= to that number.

The reason Blu-Ray isn't gonna take, can be summed up in three letters.

D.R.M.

And if they proceed with the original concept of locking the discs to a specific player when first used (by deleting and overwriting part of the disc)

Then I highly doubt Video and Game rental places will be willing, or capable, of viewing the format with anything but disgust.

I'll stick with straight DVD, thanks.

Why would anyone want to go Blu when Serenity is on HD-DVD? ;)

Blu-Ray is most certainly winning the fromat war, in terms of sales, and PR (with the debacle over HD-DVD/DVD combo disks). But I won't be jumping in for a good long while, if ever.

Keep in mind - VHS still outsells both HD formats combined, and movies aren't even released on VHS anymore.
