Finally saw it...of course it's only playing at one Cinema in the whole of Newcastle (Australia) as it's not a Schlockbuster! but at least I didn't have to make the four hour train ride to Sydney...actually I'd only have done that for another BDM...(or shoes) Anyway It was Beautiful. I was weepy about the fact that Adrienne Shelley can't share any more of her ideas with us and didn't live to see the positive impact of this movie. I know at least one woman who left her appalling husband after seeing this film. Good to know I still have a grandaughterly crush on Andy Griffith.

I finally saw Waitress, too. I found it difficult, though, to place Nathan, morally. Him being the Captain and all, I'd like to look up to him as a man of great moral fiber. Yes, there was that. He helped our Waitress see her own value. But on the other hand, not so much. Of course, I had hoped they'd run off together, got married and had hundreds of non-fat children. But that fairy tale abruptly ended. Could be because it's called "Waitress", not "Doctor." :) I mean, in the end, it really weren't 'bout Nathan, but about Keri Russell (who, for some reason, keeps reminding me of Laverne, in Empty Nest).

I say, let's have more Nathan!

OK, I'm finally going to say it. I did not think much of "Waitress". Of course, it was great to see Nathan, but the story really bothered me. (Spoiler to follow.)

One minute, the Keri Russell character is saying that the doctor is her best friend and she is ready to run off with him and the next, she is basically telling him to get lost. It ended up seeming like she was just using him. If she really cared about him, she would not treat like him was a piece of worn-out furniture. I guess the fact that he has a cute wife to return to is supposed to make it OK but I think it just makes both the waitress and the doctor seem like pretty selfish people.

Also, I thought the kissing (with the exception of the pie baking scene) was way too noisy. All that loud lip smacking seemed like it was meant to be more comic than sexy. It kind of overwhelmed the sexual chemistry the characters were suppose to have.

May have been on the losing side, still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Have you seen him on BtVS? Most call that character Caleb, but I call him Creepy Nathan. He's so scary on that show, and he was good at it, too!

Somebody please cast him as the baddy (a la Phillip Seymore Hoffman) in the next Mission: Impossible movie! Now that would be cool (as long as the script is good)!

I aim to misbehave, but I usually miss!

I think that was the point. Along with the sappy music and and the spinning camera effect.
I know I just about cracked up every time they showed the two kissing.
Keep in mind that Jenna admits she doesn't know what guys like. She's clumsy and desperate in her pursuit of the doctor and I find it downright hilarious.
It's not until she finds more meaning in the relationship that it becomes less humorous.
But that's just MHO

I really enjoyed the movie -- saw it three times at the theater.
The subleties are awesome. The way his office gets neater and neater every time we see it as he digs himself out of the previous doctor's mess. The stark contrast of his high-end SUV and polished clothes to the blue collar appearance of her husband and his car -- heck, her whole world. You can tell from the beginning he doesn't fit into it.

I don't think it's so outrageous that she dumps him at the end. She spends the whole movie trying to save herself from her awful life. Though she doesn't harm her child, she doesn't care about it either. She only lives in survival mode doing everything she can to either escape or make herself feel better. She doesn't see her doctor as a married man, just a means of survival. It's not until she meets the wife and, more importantly, meets her child that she shifts her priorities.

I think it's a glimpse into the mind of hopeless women everywhere.

wo! I thought the kissing was kind of messy too...isn't that what kissing is really like though in the heat of passion? (or maybe I've been getting it wrong)I liked that there was no happily everafter for the waitress and the doctor. she was asserting her new found stength. her experience with him gave her what she needed, and she moved on. as for him we can only hope he manned up, and did right by his poor wife, who though utterly boring doesn't deserve to get lied to. also I like that Nathan Fillion gets to have a go at varied parts. sometimes it works for him sometimes it doesn't( eg. White noise)we've all probably been crappy at our jobs when they've been less than inspiring.

I kinda agree with Hoperules. Yes, she sees Nathan as "just a means of survival." Which DOES mean she was merely using him. Now, I ain't saying I aint sympathetic to Jenna: her plight was, after all, a difficult one. And Nathan weren't exactly walking a moral high ground, either. And as for the subleties, I found them somewhat lacking: especially in the area of how she dumped Mal. I know, it's meant to be romantic or some such, that she don't care none about her baby until she looks the infant in the eyes and then does a major U-turn. But subtle it ain't. Rather, hopelessly trite.

I know, Saffron already said it, "Everyone plays everybody else." Maybe that's the thing that kept irking me in Waitress. There's too much using going on.

Boy, that Saffron quote really hit the nail on the head for me when it comes to "Waitress". I guess that I don't find that sort of thing romantic or comic or even particularly touching.

This just proves once again that there is a "Firefly" quote for almost every situation.

P.S. Please excuse the above post. I accidentally hit "postmyresponse" and could not figure out how to delete the blank post.

Nathan was great in it; that's all that counts.
