I just heard this phrase come out of my television: "Beverly Hills Chihuahua is now the number one movie in America!" Now, I ask you, what sort of world is this where I have to listen to that, but never got to hear the phrase, "Serenity is now the number one move in America"?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that BHC was as good as Serenity, but it was actually surprisingly good (well-written, for what it was).

Because a lot of families live in America, and a lot of those families have young children, so the parents of those young children decide to take them to see a light hearted funny story about a puppy instead of a bloody violent science fiction movie about government conspiracies and mass murder.

I don't see a problem here.

Have you seen Beverly Hills Chihauhua or the X-Files movie? I've seen 'em both, and although I was a fan of the series, BHC definitely deserves to make more than XF2. XF2 would have been--at best--a mediocre and quickly-forgotten episode. As a motion picture event, it was a complete disappointment.

I was aiming for good natured ribbing, I think, but as usual, the limitations of white text on a black background have prevented me from actually achieving the right balance of snarky and lighthearted. This has always been the trouble--our humor operates in totally different ways! Nothing wrong with that, but seems to mean we get at each other quicker than most.

None of the above was meant to be tetchy, girly, or whatever else. I meant good-natured teasing and can't quite seem to carry it off effectively where you're concerned, sorry. Not sure where to go from here. Perhaps there's some combination of emoticons that would convey consternation, amusement, and irritation? I hate not being able to effectively communicate!

OK, now we're getting someplace!

My chagrin stems from the fact that Beverly Hills Chihuahua (BHC), while it may be satisfying family fare, is certainly not a movie on a par with Serenity. Yet BHC is getting its moment in the sun, and our movie never did! I wish that I could have seen Serenity get the sort of broad recognition that BHC is getting (deservedly or not).

Scoured the internets and found this one:

That's pretty close, but doesn't quite get the humor in there. Perhaps if he was grinning?

The strategy here, near as I can figure it, is to identify a target's attempted re-entry into the community and be very subtly provocative. Feigned confusion makes the target appear to be churlishly unwilling to provide explanation; maintain this posture to provide justification for further maneuver. Wait for explanation and be subtly mocking. Make no move that would be obvious in its intent to belittle or harass, that way total deniability is maintained. In the event of protest, attack the target as touchy or childish, further isolating the individual from the community the target wishes to reengage. Any attempt on the target's part to request explanation will be met with further belittlement so as to make the target appear overly sensitive, paranoid or crazy. These aspects of the target's behavior will be repeated and amplified as necessary to paint the target as an unwanted threat to the community, thus further isolating the target from the community. Ideally, back the target into a corner from which the only escape appears to be lashing out, providing the entire line of attack with justification. Repeat as necessary until the target gives up and goes away, at which point the entire strategy becomes self-justifying.

If one wanted to regulate one's community so as keep unwanted individuals out, I imagine that this would be spectacularly successful.

For what it's worth, I feel 99% sure that I understand a.) the point of this thread and your original post, and b.) your irritation and utter nonplussed-ness with H.K.'s response, to which the term "passive-agressive" is one I find applicable. It's got the same general flavor as...

A: You suck.

B: What - why do you say I suck?!

A: Why, you big, over-sensitive silly - I didn't say you suck (even though you clearly do). I simply said you suck.

Though I think it's a bit tame for the situation at hand, I think the emoticon sums it up pretty well.

Wait. I think I am going to stick up for HK here. When I read her original post, I don't get "you suck". She made a statement/explanation defining her understanding of why a silly dog movie did better in the Box Office than Serenity. She gave a practical answer (and a rather good one).

If Casual would have explained his comment "Point missed.", none of this would have happened. What did Casual mean by that comment? I will not hazard a guess.

It wasn't until Casual got snarky that HK got snarky.

At risk of starting Mini-War II - I have to disagree - yes, lots of bad guys in Batman and it was a tad bamboozling in parts, but I thought they were reasonably well corralled under The Joker. But that's a little beside the point, my objection to it was the comparison of its failings to Spiderman 3's.

Spiderman 3's mistake wasn't so much too many villains - though there were and it was over complicating it - no, Spiderman 3's mistake was turning Peter Parker into a befringed tw*t!!!!!

Before I start, let me say this:

I COME IN PEACE!

Having said that, here I kinda agree with seryn, although I can see why rallem would make his statement about DK and Spidey3.

On the surface DK did appear to have a truckload of baddies to choose from. BTW Spidey3 had a truckload of problems aside from too many bad guys - it did seem that there was too much going on in that one and Peter Parker's mood swings was horribly done.

But back to DK and Ironman, both were great in their own right, but I think its apples and oranges.
Ironman, for one thing, was Robert Downey's movie from the word "go". It was a fantastic ride in every way, it was a fun (what I call) "popcorn" movie that was thoroughly entertaining. It felt like a rollercoaster ride that you wanted to get on over and over again. Nothing wrong with that.
BTW I'm getting the DVD as soon as.

The Dark Knight was slightly better, again, I think, because for me it had a great story that was told in a dramatic fashion. I love the treatment that Chris Nolan has given to my hero from my youth The Batman. There was very little in the way of overblown special effects and much was devoted to plot development, story and character development. We got that in Ironman to some degree, but again, the tone was vastly different from that of DK. Think of the tone in Serenity and then compare it to Firefly, both good storytelling, but vastly different tones.

The baddies in Spidey3 were never really fully fleshed out, except of course for GG's son from the previous 2 movies, but the DK baddies were there to drive the story along. The true baddie in this movie was The Joker, the others were there to show just how "badass" the Joker was. Heath Ledger's perf also made this an interesting character, but to me it was how the plot unfolded that made this movie extremely enjoying. Never did I feel that I knew what was coming next. Oh sure we know that Batman must live, but the question is how?

You can't really count Harvey Dent's alter ego, Two-Face as a baddie because, and this too I loved, this was an ordinary guy thrust into an extraordinary situation. He got half his face melted, you'd be a little pissed to, and he lost the woman that he loved. Also we know, from the story, that this guy is a gung-ho law & order guy get-the-job-done-come-hell-or-high-water. So he's not a true baddie in the typical sense, just a really pissed-off guy with Halloween mask issues.

BTW all the male actors in the DK were solid in their perfs, but Heath Ledger was absolutely riveting as The Joker. He does deserve the Oscar, not because of his untimely and tragic death, but I dare say, of the movies I've seen, that his was head and shoulders above the rest. Special mention should go to Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face. I could really feel his anguish when he became Two-Face.

I loved both movies for different reasons.

Butcher's Knife!

Not to beat a dead horse, but I saw huge lines in the theatre when I went to see Appaloosa for BHC.

Family movies tend to do well, mainly because there's such a dirth of them, and especially when they are somewhat well written, and/or cute (see The Chipmunks).

Plus you have JLC (Jamie Lee Curtis) who was great in Freaky Friday (yes, shoot me now I saw it and loved it). So there's a lot going for it.

But come on guys, a "dumb" dog movie over our beloved BDH. If there is any justice in the world we will get our BDS!

Ha, Ha, Hah! Mine is an evil laugh.

Why all this outrage at BHC? For what it is, it's an incredibly well-written movie, and even judged OUTSIDE family fare, it's a very solid script. While that may not make it "as good" as Serenity, it's much better than a lot of the other movies I've seen this year.

Were I Crowe and DeCraprio, I'd be more upset about being pushed to #3 by QUARANTINE. I haven't seen it, but have heard that it's pretty weak tea. Anyone care to be angered my that?

I saw Quarantine this weekend rather than Body of Lies, even though I do plan on seeing Body of Lies later. For what is was, Quarantine was great. It was a great Halloween time movie. It was fun to be in a theater full of people as we all yelled at the screen, people screamed, they clapped for the hero, and a general tension filled the room. I was highly entertained.

I'm just surprised that with all it's big names, Body of Lies couldn't beat out a movie about dogs.

There is a simple reason family films make money and it has nothing to do with quality. If junior wants to see the movie then the whole family will be going. So we're talking between 3 and 5 tickets on average. On the other hand a PG13 or R rated will not draw in entire families. So even if the latter are quality films you won't be getting as many people per household in the theater. As much as I despise family films they are a money making machine.

Even given that, I would have expected Body of Lies to earn more than the $12 million it did. I guess I was wrong. And I also don't expect it to win big this weekend with Max Payne, W. (i think) and the teen comedy SexDrive all being released this weekend.

JESUS CHRIST!

I haven't been around here since JUNE and it's like I never left!!

This is great!

Anyway I take exception to the "200 years" bit; I am not a bi-centinarian. I a healthy semi-centarian save 1. But really Causal I do think the sig's ship has sailed. I've gone over to the dark side.

Please, please. Don't throw a party. I'm not staying or anything. I'm just passing through. I was thinking about all of you and wanted to let you know how much I've missed you.

That said, I'm back off into the black. Got me some Reavers to eat!
