ABC is looking to reduce the order on two of its midseason drama series, "The Castle" and "The Unusuals."

The network has cut the order for "Castle," which hails from its sister studio, from 13 to 10.

It also has approached Sony TV, producer of "The Unusuals," for the same type of episode cutback.

"Castle" stars Nathan Fillion as a horror novelist who helps the NYPD solve crimes.

"The Unusuals" is an ensemble dramedy set in a New York police precinct co-starring Amber Tamblyn.

The order reductions came the same day ABC pulled the plug on midseason comedy series "Single With Parents."

Sources close to the network stress that the cutbacks are not for creative but for inventory reasons, as ABC has "Lost" as well as six new scripted series launching in midseason, "Castle," "Unusuals," hourlong "Cupid" and comedies "In the Motherhood," "Better Off Ted" and "The Goode Family." They could be joined by the Bill Lawrence/Courteney Cox comedy "Cougar Town," which was fast-tracked last week with a pilot order targeted for midseason.

Unlike other networks, ABC didn’t really had anything new to offer this season, because after the strike the net opted to renew lots of freshmen, and wait to go through an entire pilot process, and get most of its new series for midseason. But it seems we won’t be getting as much of those as originally planned…

* First off, no Alyssa Milano : ABC pulled the plug on sitcom Single With Parents over the usual “creative differences.” Production on the show had already been postponed several times due to disagreements between the network and the production’s team, led by creator/executive producer Kristin Newman, about the show’s creative direction, and on Wednesday ABC officially dropped the project.

Preview: Nathan Fillion in Castle

How about a new cop show ? But you know, with a twist, of course. So there would be this female NYPD detective, Beckett, with a conservative approach to the job, and then Nick, novelist with rock star tendencies who writes about murders but has gotten tired of all the boring fame and success, who would join her on the job. A sparkling duo that would investigate crime in a relative unusual way, or something.

Sure, the “comedic crime procedural” genre isn’t new, and we all love Bones, but there’s a reason you want to watch this latest ABC series, and his name is Captain Hammer Malcolm Reynolds Nathan Fillion. Just because of him I would have had to watch the show, but the show actually comes from producer Armyan Bernstein (Children Of Men, Spy Game), the pilot episode is written by Andrew Marlowe (Air Force One), and looking at this preview it looks like an awful lot of fun !

It's a shame the network won't stand behind, well, anything.

I'll watch the show religiously up until they pull the plug. I think it sounds like a fine premise. Besides, I'd watch Nathan Fillion read the phone book.

now that i've had the BDH/withdrawls i will def. watch anything with fillion or any other cast/crew in it...keep flyin'

I don't have a lot of hope for Castle. ABC had no problem canceling Eli Stone & Pushing Daises. Why would they give Castle a chance? The network has too many new shows & not enough $$.

This is crap!!! The only chance i really have of seeing stuff like Castle is if it gets a decent run on American tv then maybe get picked up by a British tv station. Usually the dvds don't even appear this side of the pond. Damn trigger happy tv execs, surely they'd realise that there's a sizeable fanbase for anythig Fillion, Firefly is alost mythical the way fan power got Serenity flying again.

i'm hoping once castle airs abc will be TOTALLY flooded with e-mail and such stating that Nathan Fillion and the show Castle Must Go On ! fillion has a bigger following than anyone imagines and...i must say,it's because he is a great personality..so, i will give it some trust on my part that the People will help make sure ABC doesn't fall in the footsteps of F*X too much ! but that's up to ABC i guess...

I hope Mr F doesn't take it personally...it's gotta bite to be in this situation so many times....if Castle doesn't happen for him, hopefully anyone on the planet who hasn't been rewarded with his acting talents will flock to "chiiled in Miami" to see Renee Zellweger and realise his potenetial. Castle looks pretty entertaining why would they want to cut it back before it has even started? And I didn't Know Eli Stone was cancelled...my mum will be devestated. It's one of the few shows she actually likes. damn
