Shindig. Ah, Shindig. What a fun episode.

Was watching it this evening as I was looking at naked girls on the www, and noticed a subtle little element in the screenplay that took place during River's freakout in the galley during the "Tall Card" game.

As River's psycho fit becomes more intense, and Simon and Book rush to assist her, we are all familiar with Jayne's opportunity to exploit the distraction and grab some of Book's winnings.

But... he could have taken them from simon, and we know that Jayne definitely does not like Simon.

So... why did he take from Book's stack?

What say you?

I presumed it was because Book had just won a large cache and Jayne figured he'd be the one less likely to miss it. Simon on the other hand was not doing as well and probably had less to steal. That's the boring realist version though. :)

Not really. Towards the ending of the 1st, and only season Jayne was getting pretty close to Book. I think he actually respected him.

I think you have a point there CellarDoor. Jayne probably was looking to do the least amount of chores possible, so he picked up Shepard's pile to see what he could get that was more to his liking.

Just a thought!

Agreed. I don't think Jayne would steal from Book (might be the only one he wouldn't steal from in a pinch, aside from maybe Kaylee). As for the instance cited, I think Jayne regarded that as good, clean, you-snooze-you-lose type fun. I don't think the esteem Jayne holds Book in would permit him to make Book the victim of out-and-out wrongdoing...unless maybe it was for a "Jayne really sells his soul this time" ep.

ETA: On further reflection, I concede that Jayne might have enough sense of self-preservation to not steal from Zoe, either.

It was like that when we got here!

Yep, It's safe to say that Jayne has a particular code of ethics that only he can make any sense of.
But to me Jayne admires, no respects strength (Captain, Zoe - in The Train Job he puts the chain of command as Mal, Zoe then - God Help us, himself).

Along comes Shephard Book, who stands up to Jayne to protect the Fed, Dobbs, which I'm sure did not escape Jayne's sharp mind that he was not a man to fool with. Later Jayne tells Mal that Book is in the room with Dobbs, etc. Again a sign, albeit a small one, that Jayne holds the shephard in some sort of regard because were it anyone else he would have overpowered them and had his way with Dobbs.

In the BDM he comes to understand that Simon also has his own strength, especially when it comes to his sister (that's a whole other story, Jayne's treatment of women on and off the boat. It gets me everytime when Jayne drags Zoe out of harms way after the Reaver slices her back in the battle on Mr. Universe's station). When Mal is telling them he aims to misbehave Jayne shares a drink with Simon - finally he accepts Simon & River as part of the crew.

Jayne is one of the most interesting characters to come along since Clint Eastwood's Preacher in Pale Rider. Jayne's trouble is that his judgment is sometimes a bit cloudy; and that cloud is formed by greed (that and being in command). No Jayne wouldn't outright steal from Book because he admires him, although he would never admit it. I have this picture in my head of Jayne & Book lifting weights together. Another bonding element is Book's knowledge of guns, his savvy of the criminal mind and his convinction to his believe. Yep, Jayne admires strength.

I concede that Jayne might have enough sense of self-preservation to not steal from Zoe, either.

Agreed. Jayne knows that Zoe will flat-out shoot him.

Even though it's my personal fanon that Simon can count cards at blackjack (I'm sure *River* can) I suspect Simon is a fairly terrible poker player, and Tall Card is a version of poker, so I don't think he'd have much to steal. And the Shepherd has a professional obligation to forgive those who trespass against him.
