Friend of mine just swallowed a fly....we are wondering what happens and what the nutritional content is likely to be. Or whether it will lay maggots in her internals? (I thought not likely) any guesses/opinions?

Do you know the old song:

"I know an old lady, who swallowed a fly.
I don't know why, she swallowed the fly.
Perhaps she'll die--.

I know an old lady, who swallowed a spider.
And it wiggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.
Well, she swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why , she swallowed the fly.
Perhaps she'll die.

I know an old lady, who swallowed a bird--"
and it goes on. Available on YouTube.

I'd say you'd do best to ask an expert on the subject.

The fly will be digested like any other food matter. It would not survie the gastic acid as it has a pH of 1 or 2, so no maggots.

As for nutrition I would say very little but there is some evidence that there is nutrition in the maggots as they are used to feed poultry. so its a shame they don't have time to lay as you might get protien and fat.

I know I swallowed a fly at least once. Kids, right? I survived. Unless it is a very large fly I would say it's nutritionally insignificant.

Yes, us bikers, do on occasion get one in the head. Since I am alive and typing this you may assume that swallowing a fly can be survivable. As for the nutritional value, I have no clue. I would usually pull over and get a Coke. No living organism will survive that biohazard soft drink. Oh! Mankind seems to be one creature that has an ammunity to it. It also takes any bad taste left by the fly from your mouth.

Am I right in thinking that the average adult human swallows five spiders in their sleep? In which case I don't think that your standard household bug wil do you any harm if ingested.

Reminds me of the stories I have read about sailing ships and how the crew would tap their biscuits on the table to scare the weavels out before the would eat them.

See the film "Master and Commader". They show them dinning at the captain's table.

Thanks for the reminder.
Those who know my passion for accuracy in detail have told me it's a thing of beauty, right down to the last uniform button. And a decent film, too.

Master and Commander is a title of a book from a complete series written by Patrick O'Brian. The title is does not match the correct story. The film is based on one of Patrick's stories, but not the one shown in the film. I have read two of his books, after seeing the film, and enjoyed both.

I'm sure I'm stalked by insects. I'm forever being bitten by green ants and white tail spiders that get caught in my trousers when they are trying to get closer to me than they need to.. Friends often pull moths, caterpillars and small spiders out of my hair...so annoying.
