BORIS

Actual conversation I had with a boy aged 9 and diagnosed with Aspergers. I remember being this confused.
"Hey Rose sometimes I think my friends lie to be funny or to confuse me" but its not funny if its a lie is it?'
"w-ell sometimes its not exactly a lie its a mis-truth for the sake of comedy and most people listening know its a made up story"
but what if I don't think its funny and I believe them?
"well if you think they're joking you need to tell them you don't get it"
mmmm like today so and so said chocolate was made from cow poo...but I Know that's not true because everyone likes chocolate and if it was cow poo no one would eat it. Isn't that right?"
"yup that's right"
"so its not funny its just gross"
"yes it is gross humour"
"so I can tell him its not funny?"
"I agree with you but many people think gross stuff is funny".
thinking before answering: "this getting along business is very hard when you don't know whats true and what isn't"
"I agree with that too"

BYTEMITE

Human social conventions were determined back when we were monkey people. I think the decision process involved thrown fruit and a chart. You could say the chosen behaviours stuck.

In short: no one understands it. I have full sympathy for your little friend, and can relate more than a little bit.

Also, I'm impressed by his logic skills. Logic skills for the win! He can be assured that as he grows older he'll become better at being able to identify made up stories and which are for laughs.

he is a logically minded child and we encourage him to talk through his confusion rather than let it fester and frustrate him. I've assured him he'll work it out as he observes how it works, and eventually learn to join in. I've shared my own experiences so he knows I'm not just comforting him. He told me today he hopes he can be as funny as me because I know how to make different kinds of people laugh...huge huge compliment.
