BORIS

At work weeks ago boys were role playing HALO ODST. Two were arguing about who got to play Edward Buck (naturally). They didn't realise I was listening and started discussing which character I was most like. apparently I'm a mix of Buck And Romeo. I had to go over and ask why and the answer I got was "well your a smart funny leader type like Buck, and people listen to you when it's time for the crunch but if someone really annoying crosses you you take them out and don't even feel bad about it. I mean you wouldn't kill them or anything, but you know you'd kinda make them feel really stupid really fast and just go on about your business.
I still don't know how I feel about that. I had to tell them that was not okay behaviour and not worth emulating.I was also concerned r.e. how I'm perceived to treat kids that fall into the annoying category. Thankfully they were of the opinion I'd only do it to grownups who should know better. Unfortunately they then pointed out some examples where I'd oh so subtly (but not subtly enough for them to miss it)"taken down" co-workers on occasions. To be honest I really don't feel bad when I think it's warranted. It's mainly the the woman who's 2nd in charge and another who's a bit older than me but way less experienced. I have problems with number 2 because she's unecessarily authoritarian towards me and that gets my goat. the other woman just keeps telling me what to do even though we have the same role/rank. She has admitted she's annoyed the older kids listen to me and not to her. So in My primal head she's fair game.
Kids are so damn sharp they don't miss a thing, no matter how good you are at camouflaging it...I must really control my annhiliation impulses when I get back to work.
I don't mind being compared to Buck though :-)

I dont play Halo, but I don't see anything wrong with that description. You don't let people walk all over you, but you arent waay over the top about letting your opinions be known.

And you can't really treat everyone equally, kids or co-workers. It's human nature to warm up to certain people and to have the opposite reaction with others.

I think it's a very god compliment.

Thanks Averyfinecompanion. Basically I worry the kids sometimes think I'm cool because I mess with people.I don't want them to understand the wrong lesson. The rules at School aged care in Australia re the "correct way" to act around the children are fairly set in stone and I have on occasion been censured for crossing the line...though ironically I have often been employed because of my success with older kids and with employers knowledge that it involves a fair amount of flexibility when it comes to towing the line. I am generally pretty careful about my behaviour around them as I am mindful of the fact that I'm a role model...and on a practical level could get fired if I'm caught crossing too many "appropriateness barriers" But on another level I agree with you and also think it's ok to learn how to block people from door matting you. I know I have a stubborn streak that wants me to teach kids those skills too, but in a way where they will use their empowerment for good not evil. I take some credit for effectively encouraging zero tolerance for bullying over the years and have happily seen really tough and not so tough kids banding together to protect bullied kids. So I guess I'm doing something right.
