I loved clicka clackas: two hard resin balls on rope you put a ring with the rope and balls hanging off it on your finger, held your hand side ways and you'd get them moving like a pendulum and build up momentum.then you'd make them hit each other loudly and for as long as possible. I could do it for ages. I was fscinated in the noise and the movement. I also liked pop-a-lots they were little foam cylinders you would squeeze between thumb and forefinger til they popped and flew in every direction. and i liked those little furry worm things you could get from 10 cent machines.

Pet rocks.
Or wait, was that the seventies? As it turns out I didn't live through either decade. :/
I do wish that I hadn't missed the 80s though, they had some great stuff.

HAIR BANDS!

I used to watch these guys down at Hammerjacks when they were still called The Generators, damn shame they got shafted into oblivion by Atlantic - that's part of why I despite the RIAA so much.

But there's just something about hair bands that's made of win, from the soft, inspiring White Lion, all the way down to the brutality of Twisted Sister.

Gang members also discovered they were cheap & effective weapons- that's why they disappeared. But yeah, cool.

Once that was discovered, it was cheap bolos or attenuated nunchaku.
Something like that could never be put on the market today.

My 80's fad was stuffed mogwai (Gremlins).

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

My 80's fad was electric guitars. Old Stratocasters, a couple Telecasters, a few Les Pauls, a lefty Gibson SG, a sweet little Melody Maker, a Carvin 12-string electric, a BC Rich Bich 10-string, a few Explorers and a Flying V, and a sweet Ibanez Iceman, along with one of my favorites, a Gibson ES-335 archtop. Never got my hands on a Gretsch or Rickenbacker, though, nor a National... :(

If I could have just one of them back now, it would be my second Stratocaster, a '72 simple black body/white pickguard with a very fast maple fretboard instead of the more common rosewood. Loved that axe, and it was the last one to go when it was time to "grow up".

On this matter, make no mistake. I want you to go fuck yourself long and hard, as well as anyone who agrees with you. I got no use for you.

Mr. President, you're a god damn, mother fucking liar.
Fuck you, you cock sucking community activist piece of shit.
... go fuck yourself, Mr. President.

I think clackers being banned due to gang violence is an urban legend. They WERE banned by the government at one point--but it was the FDA because the materials were unsafe.

Also, technically a 1970s (if not 1960s) fad. I think the version with stiff plastic (kerbangers?) was the version that was introduced/more popular in the 1980s.

Ealy to mid 80's video game arcades. I used to live in them as a kid. At my local mall there were 4 of them, and 3 more within walking distance near my house. They started to dry up around 85'. Damn they were fun. Doing a Google search, I couldn't find one picture of an actual 80's arcade. A little strange considering there were over a million of them in their heyday.
Here is a faux early 80's arcade:

Yo, Oppy ?

Get this, one of my childhood dreams was to own an arcade, before reality intervened - but yanno, technology finds a way.

There's an arcade motherboard emulator called MAME, and with the appropriate ROM files, can faithfully replicate prettymuch ALL those machines at your leisure, right down to the last little detail, since it's the actual arcade machine ROM data being used.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAME

And you'd best believe I got the ROM data, some of it personally yoinked from junked machines - there's some legal whinging about this, but it makes little sense since where can you even FIND, say, a cabinet machine of asteroids deluxe to even put a quarter *IN*, so how is it costing them money ?
Hell, they had any sense they'd put the ROM data on CDs themselves and sell em for a nominal fee.

But yeah, there's a special place in my heart for those games, I remember back when someone real good would draw a crowd, and there was a certain respect about it, right down to the corner-quarter etiquette and rules of challenge, like pop culture gunslingers - and I was DAMN good, still am, hehehe, I like to mock the younger folks, since I been kickin ass at these things longer than them little pests have been alive.

Seriously, get yourself a copy of MAME though, guilty pleasures indeed.

WHODIED

The amazingly efficient application of WINE COOLERS to SWEATER DRESSES. A couple of crappy cranberry coolers and bam! The elf boots, the leg warmers, the leggings, and all seven belts are gone. All that's left is a three foot sheath of hot pink Lycra and a 1G prototype push-up bra.

"That sure is a pretty dress. Why, I bet it'd even look good on the floor! Bartles & Jaymes?"
