We've all heard of or experienced those rare great finds. Some one tells you about a show you missed, or never really watched, and then you sit down and catch the series on DVD. You watch 1 episode, and think..." Wow.. this is really great stuff! " And then you watch another, and another..and before you know it, you've zipped through the entire show in one weekend. ( or one night ) Ring any bells ?

So, which are the DVD series you figured you'd acquaint yourself with, catch up on, or had heard good things about, only to find that .... " Meh... could have done w/ out watching this one ".

Shows you didn't like and hit 'eject' before the end are one thing. However, are there any shows you FORCED yourself ( or were forced , by a loving spouse or significant other ) to watch , start to finish, no matter what ?

Who amongst you were brave enough ? Which shows did you endure to the bitter end, once you began your DVD journey ? C'mon.... out with it.

None. Life's too short. I'll give a show a couple episodes, but if it hasn't grabbed me by then, it's done.

I suppose the closest exception would be Babylon 5 - I really don't care for 3/4 of the first season - I love it after that, but the first year is a slog.

B5 also was beyond my tolerance level, I must confess.

I also tried B5, but could not endure it.

Years 2-5 I consider some of the best sci-fi ever, but the first season is rough.

I've always heard that about B5, but I couldn't get past ol' Cap'n Woodenhead, the base commander from Season 1. I hear he's gone after that, but I never made it that far. And I've actually got all 5 seasons on DVD! I keep telling myself, "One day..."

The other one I couldn't endure was "Invasion". Just couldn't get into it, and I gave it at least 6 episodes to grab me, and it just kept pushing me further away!

Dollhouse. Slogged through Season 1, got about three eps into S2, walked away and never looked back.

There's really just a handfull of episodes from season 1 which are essential viewing for later seasons. I don't know them off hand, but it's easy to find a list.

Jogging a bit from the Sci Fi, South Park was one of the toughest for me, I am a big fan of the last 5 or 6 season, so I thought, go back and watch the first few seasons, man those were rough. But for some reason I just kept going.

I'm sure i'll get massacred for saying this, but I found the first season of Torchwood utterly torturous. But I forced myself to watch the whole lot because I wanted the back story to season 2...which for some reason I really liked.
Also got Tin Man to see the usually fine work of Neil Mcdonagh, and Alan Cummings...boring much!

Babylon 5's Seasons 3 & 4 are the best. I watch them quite often.

As for a tough DVD series to get through I'd have to say Galactica 1980. I bought it mainly for 2 reasons...it was only $9 on Amazon, and I wanted the to get the one great episode where Starbuck Returns. I thought the rest of the episodes would be as good as I remembered seeing them in 1980, but they're not.

I'll second TIN MAN. My wife and I had it on the DVR for close to a year, finally sat down to watch it, and could barely make it to the end of part 1.

On B5: It's a shame that the first season is so weak (in terms of acting and, let's be honest, budget), because overall the series is some of the best-written sci fi on TV. I will put the WRITING up against anything out there (including, possibly, FIREFLY). The problem is that the other elements don't match the strength of the writing.

As for painful series: I'll very rarely stick with them if I have trouble getting through the first disc. Possibly one of my biggest disappointments was LA FEMME NIKITA, which looked oh-so-cool, but turned out to be oh-so-dated. Another disappointment was LOST. Loved watching the show when it first aired (at least the first few seasons), and thought that it would be great to re-watch to look for clues and such. Not so much.

Many of the shows I watched and enjoyed as a child/young adult have been pretty disappointing: TAXI, WKRP IN CINCINNATI (although renting the first disc was worth it just for the adult realization that the theme song was pretty much cribbed from Harry Chapin), REMINGTON STEELE (not bad, but soooo slooooow to watch episode to episode... I wound up just skipping to the "mythology" episodes), MOONLIGHTING (often, what is cutting edge at the time is pretty crappy after the time has passed...).

Both miniseries for V were very disappointing (especially the first one), but the series was, surprisingly, much better than I remembered.

Arrested Development. My brother sang its praises and I watched it all but it never worked for me. The characters were just too stupid. I could see characters like that on the Simpsons or some cartoon, but trying to have live action people act that stupid just doesn't work for me. I can't get past thinking these people would surely have died before adulthood.

LWAVES

B5 is a tough first season to watch but it does pay off later when story points come about again. Also in Season 5 when Tracy Scoggins is on screen.

Torchwood Season 1 was a real struggle on first viewing, every week I told myself not to watch it anymore. But I did and Season 2+3 were great. Having watched Season 1 again I actually like it now for the most part.

I struggled through Dollhouse Season 1. I had given up on it but then went back after I heard about Epitaph One. I almost didn't get through it again but I kept telling myself it's Joss and it's only a few more episodes.

The Pacific was another one and I still haven't watched the last two episodes. I just didn't care for the characters and they concentrated too much on three guys. Band Of Brothers had far greater depth and when someone died it got to you. The Pacific didn't have that and was pretty boring even in some of the action scenes.

Everyone I've ever met has told me how much they love it and I finally agreed to watch it when I made a deal with a friend of mine who hadn't seen Firefly. He loved Firefly (of course) but I only got through two episodes of Arrested Development. I didn't hate it but at some point I realized that I hadn't once laughed out loud. I may give a few more episodes a shot at some point but I've been busy.

Thanks for all the discussion of B5. I've been meaning to check it out and now I'll either cross it off the list or try to find out which episodes from season 1 are worth it.

The one show I'd like to add to this list is Lexx. Back during the whole richlabonte TV_Vote thing we had a guy on here who said he'd vote for Firefly if we voted for his fav show Lexx. I didn't want to vote for something I hadn't seen so I found the first episode and sat down with it. That was the most painful hour of my life. I've never seen anything worse EVER. And the pilot is two hours long. Couldn't do it, had to cut it off.

I agree with that assessment. I didn't hate the show. I just never got to the point of really laughing at anything. It was just meh the whole way through IMO.

I love Arrested Development, but don't find it very funny.I'm just fascinated by the characters...they are so abnormally flawed and cartoonish...It is a live action cartoon...probly why I like it so much because so am I.
I found Season 3 of Venture Bros a little Meh...so haven't attempted season 4 and am rewatching season 2.
