Imma loser... of sorts. The only things I have ever won were an elephant ride when I was nine( and I'm pretty sure everybody "won" a ride just to drag mom and dad and their wallet to the fair) and I once went on a filling-out-online-entry-blanks-for-two-years-and-all-I-got-was-a-bottle-of-non-alcoholic-mix-that-was-discontinued-by-the-time-the-contest-ended phase.

One time I won a chance to win a truck but someone got the winning key on the first try.

So question of the day- Have you ever won anything cool???

And I don't mean gamblin' winnins, we both know you probably lost as much as ya ever won...

Now I am learning about scary.

Oh, I can relate! I was once at a raffle and bought the same number of tickets as everyone else. Then I sat there winless while everyone won again and again. By the time they were on their third win, some of the others gave me their winning tickets out of pity. It was a nice gesture, but ouch.

RIVERLOVE

Back in 1986 I sent in a postcard as part of Showtime's "Guess the Oscar Winner" contest. One day I got a phone call and they told me I had won 2nd prize, a 36 inch projection Sony tv. In 1986 I could never have afforded to buy a tv like that, so when it was delivered a few months later it was very exciting. It was pretty high tech for its' day, and had external speakers mounted on both sides. That TV ending up lasting almost 20 years. Never won anything of significance since then.

I've won or placed highly for assorted accessories I've entered in craft competitions/expos. does that count? I didn't get prizes but it was nice to know acclaimed artisans and other craft boffins like my creations.
Also I've won over a lot of good people over the years and subsequently amassed an impressive pool of quality friendships...that's a pretty neat prize

A couple years ago I "won" an amazon vote thing where I got the opportunity to buy a 46" LCD tv for $700. It was a significant discount at the time. It pretty much forced me to jump into the HDTV realm. I'm pretty happy with it though.

America loves a winner!

When I was in HS, I won an album from a radio station. I was the correct caller.

Years later, I won another radio contest, by showing up at a live remote. The 1st one who showed up w/ a copy of an album from a certain group , won a free golf bag. It was the same album I had won, back in HS.

And the best part ? I got to hang out w/ Jewel ( the pop singer, not Staite ) and her then boyfriend / now husband, rodeo legend Ty Murray. He was in town for a sports convention, and Jewel was tagging along. And her little dog too....

Won a few card tourneys. Picked up $2000 on blackjack in about an hour's time in Vegas a few years back (paid for the trip, and then some). I had a hundred bucks that I set aside for gambling, and turned it into 2 grand.

Won the annual Hold 'Em tourney at work three years running now. It's always good for a couple hundred bucks. Won a few other poker nights, too.

Won a Fender Stratocaster in a drawing at a local music store. I sold it, as I didn't care for it as much as my '72 sunburst Strat or my '75 black one back then. Now I just miss 'em all...

Nope, didn't go to the electronics expo - saw some footage online. Wish I got to go - I'm a gadget geek! (Oddly, I'm somewhat of a Luddite, too, though - so I'm *intrigued* and fascinated by the gadgets, but it always takes me a while to finally jump in!)

KANEMAN

I guess I've been lucky(and feel bad about it sometimes because I know I am not the most deserving). I've won with War Emblem to win in the tri-fecta of a lifetime(paid my mortgage in a rough year and bought it on a whim driving home). I've always got the girl I wanted, I won my first fishing derby when I was nine, I won a turkey the first time I ever shot a gun, I won class couple and class best friends in high school(although I was neither ...Story for a different time), Once took a vacation I couldn't really afford to St.Kitts and won the price in a one night stay-over in Peurto Rico playing craps. However, I feel most lucky because my babies were both born healthy and continue to be(10 and 14). I have a wonderful family and great friends(although smaller in #'s by the year..friends). I found Firefly and Buffy by accident because I got divorced and was depressed(Watched FF in one sitting and All of Buffy in three nights) and they saved me in my way. I still feel like I could have been more lucky(which is crazy because I live on a fantastic lake in the greatest state in America CT)

I do wish you the best and am sorry you feel unlucky. Wishimay, life is strange. Give it time, keep a positive outlook and your door will open. That is a Kaneman guarantee.

I just reread that and I didn't want to sound content and happy with my life. I have had many regrets(just debating Kwikco comes to mind ) and have had many things go against me(Much were much more meaningful than winning a turkey shoot or fishing derby).

I guess what I am saying is keep your head up, work towards the best, and at the same time glorify what you do have. And never underestimate what you DO have...I don't have it..

Good luck.....Kaneman

I am now so jealous of you words can't cover it.
I hear she's really nice and friendly to those that meet her in person. Lucky bugger.

I've won a couple of things in my life but nothing much.
I entered a competition in a video store once and won a £100 of HMV vouchers to spend on videos (back before DVDs were around).
and I don't follow football at all but during my A-levels some friends were having a bet on the outcome of an England match that night. They needed one more place filled and begged me until I gave in and handed over my £1. I predicted a 0-0 draw and they said no way but I just wanted them to shut up. The following morning I hadn't even checked the result when a bag of money dropped on my desk. I'd won £25 and was very happy to take their money.

I guess it all depends on the type of contests one enters.

Lotteries and such, well, the chances of winning are so low to begin with. Don't base you luck on those as only very few people win. Contests of skill, on the other hand...

I haven't 'won' anything of note. Back when the Serenity movie site was up, I 'won' a Serenity dewrag, kerchief, whatever you want to call it, as an 'also participated' for a short story I contributed. BUT it was the first step on the road to becoming a writer.

Since then, I've had several runners-up but no wins and I don't care. One of the runners-up wins resulted in being included in an anthology of short stories.

Ultimately, it's not what you win or don't win, it's that you tried and learned, right?

Maybe I'm too optimistic.

My friend's Mom won (in a group at work) LOTTO for like, millions. Split between them all, she still never has to work again.

Well, I call that one a win...
I'd also say- "So, white men CAN jump?", but I don't actually know... Are you a white male??

When I was in 8th grade I won a little class singing competion. Teacher even taped me singing it(a Garth Brooks song, lol!) I can sing in deeper ranges than most girls, but good luck catching me doing it ;)

Just FYI,I just read that Orange county zoo is suspending their elephant rides... As someone who rode one and felt guilty about it for years, I support this decision. It's a really, really stupid thing to make elephants go around in circles for hours carrying around spoiled kids. They are like tigers, and can snap anytime- and having your kid on it when it happens is not good... Not sure animal acts are much more ethical, but it may be the only way some species survive...

Oh don't worry. I've never let the issue of race get me worked up. In my time I've had all manner of discriptions. Most of them from old teachers who if they were to be judged by the way things are now, well let's say they'd probably be fired for their remarks. However I don't take it like that. It was the way back then. In fact I kind of prefered it. At least you knew where you stood. Now there is so much political correctness that a true racist can hide behind it.

Anyhoo. Yes Grenada. The Isle of Spice and true Paradise. Seriously if you can go to the Caribbean (and let's face it a few of your soldiers did back in 84) then you should try and go to Grenada. It's an amazing place!

(and just a side note one of those photo's on the website was taken by my girlfriend)

Oh and I watch Nascar and play the Ukulele - not the Banjo mind but y'know getting there

A friend from high school got on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. In the entry round (whatever it's called) he got the correct order of some movie series, but the only other guy who got it right was 2 fractions of a second faster. It might have been the names of the Star Trek or Star Wars films.
He was the second smartest math student in our class.
I knew somebody who was on Price is Right, but now can't recall who it was.
