So, I finally got around to picking up the Season One DVD, and it's every bit as excellent as I remembered: The acting, writing, cinematography, and especially Stewart Copeland's music!
My favorite episode has always been the second one, "China Rain", and damn if that transition into the opening credits didn't make me burst into tears just like it did 26 years ago!

EDIT: Damn! The clips have been yanked off YouTube!

Wow. Thanks for that CL. You just reminded me how great this show was! And you're right about the cinematography and direction and in particular that score! Wow when that theme kicks in it bring up the hairs on the back of the neck! What a great show!

Did you recognize 'Mickey' ? It's Holtz from Angel season 3!

They don't make them like that anymore.

By the way are there any extras on the DVD? I think I have to buy this.

"I am only what I appear to be..." What a line.

I bought season one a couple of years ago and it was cheap then so hopefully it's stayed low for you. My version just had the episodes, no extras but it's definitely worth it. It stands up well with some great stories.

Woodward is great as the grumpy, easily irritated hero who wasn't always nice to people. I always liked the fact that his character quite often got the people to help themselves, he just set things going and guided them through until the inevitable showdown.

My favourite character was always Mickey and it was nice to see him get his own storylines sometimes rather than just being the hired muscle. Seeing him years later in A Perfect World, Angel and more recently The Dark Knight always caused me to think "Hey it's Mickey" and he reminded me of this show and how much I loved it. It's just a pity that Woodwards health put a damper on later seasons but you have to give full marks to him for keeping going.

The theme stands out as one of the best TV show themes ever IMO. It has a great build up showing the streets of New York until the main section comes in and The Equalizer is revealed.

If you liked the show then, you'll like it now. If you loved it then it's a must buy. I just wish they'd release the other seasons but it's been so long it's not looking good.

There's a commentary for the pilot episode with co-creator Michael Sloan (which I haven't listened to yet) and a bonus episode from Season 2, but that's it.

Oh, and I'm happy to have brought back those memories for you, Som!

EDIT: I'm listening to the commentary right now, and it's great! Sloan really has some nice stories to impart.

Wow! I loved this show! Didn't know Edward Woodard died, though.

I loved Edward Woodward in the Equalizer! He was also in one of my favorite action movies, known in Great Britain the as "Who Dares Wins", and in the states the film went by the title "The Final Option". It's one of the best movies to feature the SAS, their tactics, and their intense training. Mr. Woodward played the Scotland Yard Inspector sent to negotiate with terrorists that have taken hostages in the American Embassy.

The last time the "The FInal Option" was issued here for sale, it was available only on VHS. For those that are interested, It was never released here on DVD, but I recently ordered an imported copy of "Who Dares Wins" on Blueray from Amazon.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

I know that movie, it's great and the action scenes still hold up well. The storming of the Embassy is excellent.
Lets also not forget his roles in the original (and far superior) The Wicker Man, as Callan the man who was forced to kill and as the head of the NWA in the hilariously brilliant Hot Fuzz. Plus a film not many have seen called Breaker Morant. He plays one of three soldiers being used as scapegoats in a trial to cover up the bad deeds of their superiors. Brilliantly acted prison/courtroom drama.
