America loves a winner!

I've still not seen the full theatrical version of this movie. Saw a good bit of it on t.v. last night. Lots of the story in the middle part I'd not seen before.

For those who fancy themselves to be vampyre enthusiasts, or enjoy the writings of Anne Rice, what was the over all view of this on screen version ?

Where does this story fall on the map, as far as vamps go ?

And where do the other vampire tales fall on the scale of great, good to....suck ?

Just curious.

Odd, I was talking about this today.

Well, I haven't seen the movie or read the books. But I tend to not like anything that romanticizes vampires or even that makes them the seductively "sympathetic" bad boy/girl (they usually are still amoral and not sympathetic).

They should be demonic monsters leaving bodies and newly turned vampires behind them and sowing mayhem.

From what I've heard, it sounds to me like Anne Rice vampires are pretty weak. Some of them are monstrous enough and kill enough, but they lose points by being foppish. And then they're hiding out like they're afraid of human retribution despite supposedly being so much stronger, being too easy to kill by fire or sunlight. But then I have that complaint about a lot of vampire depictions: they're hard to take seriously as threatening.

Well, per the movie, 'foppish' is dead on accurate. ( not that there's anything WRONG with that...or is there ? )

This go around w/ the movie, there was a particular bit which reminded me of Angel. All I'll say is...

Oh, I'm right there w/ ya. I can blame Joss for any amount of interest I have on the subject. And I suspect those truly into the genre would probably scoff at the Joss Whedon version of the vampire world, but hey... at least it's not that New Moon crap.

Which kinda brings me around to the basic point...which series of vamps , if there is one, generates the most interest from true vamp fans? Or general fantasy/ sci-fi types ?

LWAVES

I've always considered myself a fan of vampire movies but whether that makes me a 'true' vamp fan is another thing. I've never particularly liked that term as it is too indefinable and each group thinks they are the true ones.

I don't mind the often done romanticised stories or the pure evil monster versions. To me vampires are neither human nor demon, they are a mash of both and have traits of both. So whilst they can be bloodthirsty killers they can also show emotion and weaknesses common to humans as well.

As for the film then I really like IWAV (I haven't read the books). It's not perfect but it's decent and certainly worth one watch. The interview itself between Brad Pitt and Christian Slater is kind of superfluous except for being a convenient way of jumping between time periods. Kirsten Dunst is great as the young Claudia, Pitt and Cruise are decent enough although sometimes you just want Pitt to get a grip and deal with it. The film is decently shot with some nice sets/locations and the story itself is good enough. There's not really any action but then it's not that type of film so don't expect any. It's more about relationships and just general living.

It's a long way away from the Twishite movies (which can't really be classed as vampire movies) but is also nothing like Underworld, Salem's Lot, Buffy or True Blood even though there are elements of all of them in there. It is probably more akin to Bram Stoker's Dracula and the gothic horror stories of that time.

If you do watch it you must do yourself a favour and DON'T watch the sequels. They're not worth the time wasted.

I'm not a fan of either the book, or the movie. A bunch of cupie dolls playing vampire. I didn't buy ANY of the cast in a vampire roll.

Don't read Dacre Stoker's Dracula the Undead then.

I agree that Vampires are a mash of demons and humans but I wouldn't go as far to say they still have emotions. They have base instincts, are driven by base needs.

That said (and having written about a vampire) I'm more of a werewolf fan. I have yet to find a vampire book, aside from Dracula, that has captured the true vampire essence. BUT I really like the Underworld movies and the Blade movies.

Not a Buffy fan. Besides it's not fair to campare TV series with movies or novels. TV series are watered down, family friendly versions. That is changing, though.

If it's a story about relationships between vampires and living the vampire life, then I have to majorly disagree that IWAV is anything like Dracula. It IS potentially like Carmilla, as that story goes into some detail about the kinds of lifestyle and attitudes a vampire might cultivate, but on the other hand, Carmilla is ultimately shown to be a monster, not misunderstood, is destroyed, and everyone under her spell is glad to have escaped her.

Rarely does gothic horror ever actually show the monster as sympathetic, as in Frankenstein. Most gothic horror is about escaping the monster or hunting down the monster. This is largely because of the religious stranglehold on literature at the time; it wasn't until more secular society arose that morality became broad enough to allow more sympathetic vampires and even friendly neighborhood vampires that weren't unholy devils.

Yeah, I also prefer werewolves. At worst, you're uncontrollable twelve nights out of the year, but not by choice (except some of the older werewolves that made deals with the devil), so it's not as parasitic or condemning.

And if you start to figure out what's going on, you can take measures to keep yourself and the people around you safe. Like monkshood/wolfbane.

It's a little more tricky with vampires: they always need to feed, it's not always guaranteed that they retain their minds or personality, and whether or not animal blood can do the job or whether they have to kill their victims varies. Even the immortality is unappealing, without factoring in the other downsides.

I've never watched Buffy. The vampires are at least demonic, so they got that right, but I suspect the personalities of the two main vampires would bug me.

Hey, come to think of it, he DOES sound a bit like someone I know...

I guess w/ the whole vampire genre, there's only so much you can do before certain themes come up, over and over.

It's like from the movie CONTACT... why aren't there any great astronomers who are vampires ?

didn't read the book, and not a fan of vampires, but I thought the film was remarkable. Kirsten Dunst is fantastic in it, and the film overall is beautifully cinematic. It had a fairly strong impact on the way I view fantasy, there's an element of what I want to call "fantasy suspense" which i first saw here, and it's possibly more important than the magic itself.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.
