A stupid mistake by Lorre, imho. People who watched that show liked Charlie's character. I don't watch the show but I'm prepared to bet that bumping him off won't help the show in terms of storyline plus it will piss off the regular fans. Stupid mistake and it may well cost them.

Personally, I think it's a GOOD idea to kill off Charlie Harper. Charlie Sheen is such as train-wreck that he's going to destroy anything he touches these days.

If Sheen isn't going to be on the show, does it matter to his fans if the character is dead or not? Probably not.

Will the show fail without him? Probably. But it's success or failure will now be dependent on the new formula and direction NOT on the slim hope that Chuck Lorre and Charlie Sheen will patch things up behind the scenes, allowing Charlie Harper to someday return. For better or worse, the show will have a new identity, with no going back.

Well, imagine if in some revival of Firefly that didn't feature Nathan, they killed off Malcolm Reynolds off-screen in the first episode. Would you go "Oh well, he isn't in it anymore" or "You lousy sons of bitches!"? Just because people don't attend Two and a Half Men conventions, it doesn't mean they don't care about the characters. It's not about Sheen ever returning to the show - it's about showing respect to the audience. There was a similar situation about twenty five years ago - Airwolf ditched its two main stars, one of whom had substance abuse problems, killing one off and disappearing the other. Sure enough, the retooled show died a hideous death.

It's hard enough to persuade people to watch a show when you've ditched the main point of attraction. It's harder still when you do something that deliberately pisses them off.

I don't think Firefly and Nathan Fillion is a fair comparison (and, for the record, if they ever do re-tool Firefly, I fully expect that AT LEAST one character will have died/disappeared off camera).

You and I are coming at things from different angles. I think that killing Charlie off DOES she respect to the audience. It gives closure to the character in a dramatic and final way rather than ridiculous story acrobatics (see Three's Company) or completely ignoring the situation (see Bewitched).

Further, it gives the audience the respect of the creators saying "Listen, we're moving forward, and we hope you're willing to move forward with us, but the behind-the-scene bull$#!+ that's been going on--and that torpedoed the show for you last season--won't be happening again. We've closed that door."

You seem to feel that a significant portion of the fanbase will be willing to watch the show without Charlie Sheen--but only as long as Charlie Harper is alive and well somewhere. I respectfully disagree, and think that portion of the audience is miniscule.

Will the show fail when it's re-tooled? Very likely, but that failure will have nothing to do with the fact that Charlie Harper is dead. It will have to do with the fact that re-tooling fails more often than not. It is a sub-optimal creative situation.
