ANONYMOUSE

My cat Tigger was hit by a car sometime early this morning.

I wouldn't have known if not for a bloke walking his dogs, who told me a cat had been hit by a car and covered with newspapers on the pavement. Given how rare cats are where I live, I wasn't surprised to see it was my poor baby.

I'm pretty sure she died instantly, little consolation though that is.

She was over 12 years old, but not showing it in the least. She was still dashing around like a mad fool, catching birds, mice and insects, as if she were still a kitten. I'd hoped for many more years of her company, daft little beggar that she was.

Last week an interesting-looking moth fluttered in through an open window. I was just about to take a picture of it when Tigger came out of nowhere and scoffed it! Then a couple of hours later, an unusually big (and therefore interesting) moth came in - and the same thing happened again! You can't tell cats off, and I was too busy laughing anyway.

I loved watching her picking on particular spots on the carpet - nothing there, just bare carpet - and deciding that these offended her with their very existence, so they had to die! She'd leap on them, strike with her claws and back off just as suddenly, stalking them...

I will miss that.

Words fail me. We've lost a few over the years too. It still hurts, we still miss 'em, even tho' time has gone and they've been replaced.
Remember the joys and the good times. Sounds like she was a darling.

FREMDFIRMA

I am sorry for your loss - I hope it was at least quick for the little furball.
It won't be quick for my cat Puppy (named so for various canine behaviors) as she has oral carcinoma, and the abysmally low percentage treatments sounded more like torture than help, so I simply decided to introduce her to total no-limits hedonism in the time she has left, right now she's about as happy as a cat could be, and should the time come, at least she'll have that.

I think the hardest, most bitter part of a situation like yours is not getting to say goodbye, it's so random, so unexpected, but so too is life, often enough, and certainly cats are.
Right now I feel the very keen awareness that every time I pet the kitty, every time she climbs up in my lap, could be her last, which is both gift and tragedy - to love a cat is to accept that they'll not likely outlive you, and it's kind of sad that their lives are so comparatively short in comparison with our own...
But ya never know, hell, *I* could get hit by a car while doing the rounds - fate seems to love its ironies.

Anyhows, my condolences, Anon.

Thanks a lot, guys. It had to have been instant...the pressure pushed one of her eyeballs almost out of her skull (eew). That could only have happened if she'd been hit at speed. We do get idiots driving fast down that particular road...and it's downhill.

I thought I'd post a little tribute to Tigger, viz. Data's Ode To Spot. In fact I originally wanted to call her Spot, but my nieces talked me out of it after seeing Tigger's antics. I had to agree the name fitted her, given her nature and colouring. She was a tricolour tortoiseshell - black, white and ginger; her mum, Dusty, was a cute little grey and white thing, while her dad was a big, rowdy ginger tom. Anyway:

Ode To Spot, by Lieutenant Commander Data (Operations Officer/Second Officer, U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D)

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

America loves a winner!

Hate to hear of your loss. Dunno if there's a good way to lose a pet, but as quick and painless would be my guess.
