TALK STORY

Theoretically, is there any way the Earth's rotation could be sped up ?

Only briefly, and then slowed down, back to normal ?

My guess is, if so, it would probably be a very bad day for - well, everyone.

Had this weird dream where I was outside, sun was shining, and there was no or few clouds in the sky. I was in a park, or by some open field, and there were dozens of folks mingling about, as if at some festival or some such. Then, the sun, which was up around noonish in the sky. started to dip down, to about the 4-5 o'clock level, in a time span of a few seconds. No sound, other than the usual stuff, just the sun, moving well out of place, and in a hurry. No thunder. No explosions or anything.

Everyone stopped. Did we ALL just see that ? WTF just happened ?

And then I woke up.

I can't really call it a nightmare, as I wasn't scared. I've head dreams about storms, cataclysmic tidal waves / tsunamis, or avalanches, but this was different. It was more of a stunned feeling than anything else.

I had recently seen 2012, on t.v., so that's prolly where my brain got the 'end of the world' scenario. But I woke up, and was thinking... that was cool ! But that couldn't happen, could it ?

Maybe if a giant meteor came close enough to the Earth, didn't hit, but passed by... but that'd still cause lots of chaos.

Dreams can be weird.

The 2012 scenario could happen, and has repeatedly, yes. (That would also explain your insightful other thread.) The spin revving, not so much. Superman can slow down or speed up Earth's rotation, but I think he was moving more than the Speed of Light, which of course isn't possible according to some.

IIRC, orbital distance, mass, orbital velocity, and rotational speed are mathematical functions of astrodynamics. But I'm fuzzy on the details right now, so could be incorrect.

Only time the 2012 scenario ( ok - not fully sure what that even means ) has happened that comes to mind , geologically speaking, is the Chicxulub impact , and possibly the Siberian Traps eruption.

Those 2 events, one a really bad day, and the other, lasting thousand or millions of years, really did put a number on the planet and almost wiped out life for good.

But aside from the end of the world, I often wonder if there could be an actual global event, or stellar event, which all humans could see, or at last 1/2 the planet see, at the same time, which would bring everything to a stop.

Something so unusual, not like a comet or an eclipse. Maybe a distant exploding star...

A giant solar mirror in synchronous orbit about the Earth would get Earthlings' attention. It would be brighter than the Moon because it's . . . a Mirror! And when Earthlings get blasé about having two suns in the sky, the mirror adjusts its millions of reflective panels to concentrate all that reflected sunlight onto one city, preferably New York or Tokyo, to get Earthlings' renewed respect and attention.

There is a claim that NASA scientists discovered a "missing" day in time that corresponds to Biblical accounts of the sun's standing still in the sky. Is it real or just a dream? Find the truth at www.snopes.com/religion/lostday.asp

I remember before the '96 Olympics, one of the guys in charge of promotion had a crazy idea of putting up giant billboards in low earth atmo. Instead of planes pulling banners behind them, companies could send up satellites which would unfurl large sails with their logo. which would appear about as size of the full moon to those looking from the surface.

I guess that idea got shot down.

Let's look at the best scenes from the movie 2012 (2009) www.metacritic.com/movie/2012

It's hard to do justice to this ridiculous, wonderful movie. To describe "2012" is to make it sound like every other end-of-the-world disaster epic you've ever seen. And it is. It's a Roland Emmerich film very like his others - "Independence Day" and "The Day After Tomorrow" - about an epic, global catastrophe that begins ... But wait. You already know how it begins: In a small room, a scientist looks at a computer screen and mutters ... "My God!"

Sure, you've seen this before, and yet you haven't, not quite like this. People talk about "formula" almost always as a pejorative, but formulas get to be formulas because they work, and there's something to be said for a formula picture done almost to perfection. In "2012," Emmerich gives you everything you expect, but gives it to you bigger.

Imagine a car racing through a neighborhood in Pasadena as the street and the houses behind it crumble into the center of the Earth. Imagine a plane taking off on a disintegrating runway - and having to fly around falling buildings and an unmoored elevated train. Imagine massive tidal waves sweeping through coastal cities and wiping out (you guessed it) major landmarks. Now imagine everything twice as grand as you're picturing it.

Sure, you'll laugh at "2012" - I laughed at it; laughing at it is part of the experience - but you'll do it from the edge of your seat.

Thing is, unlike most folks, I really have paid attention to the fact that the planet has been around for a very long time. 99.9999% of its existence has been with OUT humans wandering about.

To honestly think that WE, after all this rock has endured, are the ones who'll finally screw things up SOOOOO much that life itself can't rebound, is beyond absurd.

Frankly, we haven't seen jack shit what this planet can do. And frankly, I don't think we want to. If it's a contest , we're gonna lose Big time. Earth ? She'll win. Hands down.

There has been 5 mass extinctions, each killing a moderate amount of Life. Killing 96% is moderate, isn't it? The Next Extinction will not kill all Life, either. That means you are right again, AURaptor! www.bbc.co.uk/nature/extinction_events
