I've been reading this board for 3 months now, and in the past two days I've seen something I've never seen before. Two folks have declared they're outta here, and not coming back, as discussions have gone (or started out) ugly.

Granted this is the only site I've ever hung out on, and perhaps I'm being naive (Kaylee is my favorite character, BTW) but . . .

Is it because the movie has made this site more popular (therefore more postings), or is it because we're coming down off the high of the relative success of the movie, or

is it just human nature?

Just asking 'cause I'm a little down about it, yet curious about other peoples thoughts. And also a little intimidated. Who's going to flame me now?

EDIT: well, probably flamed for starting this thread in Talk Story instead of General Discussions. Sigh.

I don't know Hera, this is the only board I've ever frequented too. I find it IMHO, a haven and a home.

I have seen the posts you are referring to. The one lady who declared she was leaving did come back and I was grateful for that. I think despite some sarcasm in that thread ( on her part and others) that there were folks trying to cheer her up and answer her question.

As for the other fellow (?) ... I dunno. I think it's unfortunate that they left like that. It's just a difference of opinion.

Despite lots of jokes on this board and some really, really intelligent people ( very quick witted those guys are!) for the most part I think we're all peaceable and feel like we're part of a crew.

I don't think you'll get flamed. And I think all and all the board will stay a wonderful place.

Me too - about this being the only web site I frequent, or ever have frequented. From what I hear it's not so nice other places! I'm glad it's nice here, and I do hope it'll stay that way...

It doesn't seem surprising that all us BDM newbies and DVD newbies will include some downers, and that's too bad. Human nature though, like you say.

The one that left today sounded like he (she?) had his own anger to deal with. Sad! Hope he chills out and comes back to make up!

I haven't read any of the posts where people were claiming to leave but I have noticed a bit of a change on the boards. It was bound to happen with the movie bringing in new people. This seemed like a very tight-nit community when I started frequenting this site and I think people become very protective of that or get sensitive about it. I so enjoy this site and I have to say I am not perfect, sometimes I can be a little snarky about some questions brought up in threads. Maybe it's a question of maturity or just personality clashes but I hope every person that comes to this site can have some respect for each other and remember, this is supposed to be about soemthing you love and enjoy!

We are bound to have differences and trolls are everywhere, but the heart of this board is pure and loyal. I for one have loved the excitement over the past few days, and while I don't like to see anyone leave, I couldn't help but laugh at one particular post *cough*Operative*cough*.

But all joking aside, this community is a great support system, and eventhough they'll never admit it, those Browncoats that tend to be rather negative find this place, and its optimisim, cathartic as well.

I love my comrades-in-arms, and when we bicker among ourselves over rumors and the like, all it does is give me cause to love you 'Coats all the more...because that's what families do.

We will hold...we hold till Mal gets back.

I know what you're talking about. It's the same way with real worlder part of the site. Maybe no one should talk politics here. No good can come from it. I like to be here because I feel safe and I don't have to explain my love of firefly to everyone. There is no reason to be angry but some people can't keep themselves from trying to hurt people.

While I admit I haven't seen the posts you're referring to, as the title of this thread intrigued me so I read it first, I know where you're coming from. I actually posted something similar in my flylog a few months ago, just after the DVD cover art was released.

Quote:

Is it because the movie has made this site more popular (therefore more postings), or is it because we're coming down off the high of the relative success of the movie, or is it just human nature?

Yes.

I think it's all three of those. More and more people are discovering the 'verse and the site and it's inevitable that not everyone will get along.

But there has also been a change in tone, and it's gone on for awhile, since the BDM was released. This was also inevitable, not everyone is going to like the same things, nor should they be expected to. And since this is a medium for expressing personal opinions conflict is likely.

It can be really difficult at times to determine a posters tone and intent in a post. Everyone (and I know I'm guilty of this) forgets that sarcasm doesn't always translate well when it's written down. And when what was intended to be a funny/snarky post gets taken seriously... well, lets just say it's not pretty.

I think you're on to something when you mention coming down off the high of the movie. Before the movie came out everyone was just concerned over whether or not there would be a movie that most conflicts tended to die pretty quickly.

Personally, this wasn't the first FF board I found and frequented, but it quickly became my favourite and now I consider it my 'home'. I don't post as much as I used to, mostly because of the change in tone (so much negativity) and because if I see one more petition thread I may scream (it's a long story).

I think the only thing anyone can do is just carry on being civil and browncoaty (yes, I know it's not a word but it should be!) and loving Firefly or Serenity or Joss or Mal or Nathan or Kaylee or Jewel or Simon or... whoever/whatever it is you like. That is why we are here. Hopefully, the rest will work itself out.

Just my $0.02CAD.

Hera, this board had a huge influx of new members post-BDM, and that changed the dynamic somewhat...The 'family' feel was diluted a bit, but as the passers-by fall off, I think the family feel will be coming back as strong as ever. I for one look foward to the many new permanent Browncoat members. Our family can't ever be too big.

BTW, if anyone's referring to the Real World Events Discussion board in particular, that corner of FFF has always been a hotbed of contention and sharp debate, some of us Browncoats like a good ruckus, and go in knowing it's gonna be rough, heh heh.

Thank you for the info/warning, Glueman. I'll stick my toe in there someday, just so I can grok how good we have it here. Perspective is a good thing to have.

Rumours of mean-spirited folk on message boards were what warned me off the internet until recently (well, aside from FF being the only big passion that I wanted to involve myself in). Something about complete anonymity breeding complete intolerance, or some such. When I came upon FFF.net, I was impressed by the supportive tone and, well, the fact that everyone talks about what I want to talk about, which is FF.

I'm a countin' my blessings here. Thanks you'se guys!

SIGMANUNKI

Well, my frequenting has been a lot less frequent as of late, mainly due to RL badness.

But, from what I've seen, the anger usually is generated from the movie. Everyone was really geared up to see it and some of us were disappointed (to varying degrees) and others happy (to varying degrees) about it.

Now everyone wants to convince people that they are right. That there is/isn't inconsistencies in the movie or whatever, and no-one is backing down (or listening to eachother for that matter).

I've even been considering at least taking an extended leave from the site because of it; I've gotten sick fighting (this site is supposed to be my relaxing). Then again, this could just be my RL badness talking, which is why I haven't left just yet; I waiting to see.

But, to answer your question, IMO, it's a combination of new people, human nature and disagreements about the movie.

But, it has become more serious than this. When the movie came out and I participated in a number of discussions regarding it vs the series. I thought that this could result in a schism in the FF community. And that has begun:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/showblog.asp?b=3190
"""
I'm sticking with the fans that are grateful for what they get.
"""

Or conversly, if you aren't grateful and happy about the movie, I'm not with you; piss off.

Something is going to have to happen soon to stop this ludicrous behaviour. Otherwise, there will be far more than just one or two leaving.

And Haze, bringing this to peoples attention is of course, the first right step. Now maybe we have a chance to stop the madness. Time will tell.

ps I use the movie vs series debate above not to enter (or start) a debate about it. It is just where I think that the problem started.

Thanks, Sigmanunki. Sometimes I am happy that I saw the movie first, took it on it's own merits. I didn't have high expectations to be dashed. I walked out of the theatre, looked up at the stars and thought "wow". I was transported.

Last time that happened, I was 15. I saw "Star Wars" the week after it opened.

It's nice to feel that way again. It's also nice to find the 'verse in the series. I love it just as strongly, but differently.

I know without a doubt that the movie would have elicited VERY strong emotions in me if I had been with the series from the get go. I have a friend who is a huge FF fan who has yet to see it, for that very reason.

Well, I'm pretty new myself, but I for one greatly enjoy the friendly atmo around here. Heck, I won a caption contest on my first try, and I'd only been a Browncoat for a week or two! I don't post often, for one because I like to limit it to when I have something to say, and two because I tend to devote most of my Firefly time to writing up my fanfics (Begin shameless plug-Check them out! They're good! Really!-End of shameless plug).

The bottom line here is that I don't think any of us are "pathetic" to the point where we've lost sense of reality. We enjoy the show, we get together to talk about it, but it isn't like we'll all commit mass suicide if it isn't renewed in some form. We got us some darn fine stories out of the 'verse already, and I'm happy to have them. We're going to get more, definitely books and comics, hopefully big/small screen stuff shortly as well. But, in the meantime, we just have to hold out and enjoy what we've got, which in this case is 15 odd hours of excellent filmed entertainment, the aforementioned books and comics, and each other.

That's not much, but it's enough.

And incidentally, I for one thought the film flowed into the series very, very well. I loved it, and a fellow Browncoat declared it "The best film I've seen this year." And keep in mind, he's a tech-geek who sees a LOT of films. I also declared it the best film of the year, and I see even MORE films.

Take that, Mannequin Skywalker.

I'm new here myself, but just some thoughts...

I've seen alot of news about rumors, and alot of posts about "Come on people, get off your butts and get this series back on the air again" and honestly, I think for all you guys who have been here from the beginning, it has to be frustrating to have waited so long for the movie and get the influx of new people who are all fire about getting more (that run on sentence was due to the rising prices of punctuation and my poor schooling).

You guys have my deepest sympathy, and my hat's off to you for everything you've done to get us newbies hooked. THANK YOU ALL!!!!
I've been on a few forums, and for the vast majority of people here, everyone is fantastic and treats each other with respect.

My second though on the matter is that the anger stems from global warming, global cooling, and the dukes of hazzard.

I tend to think some people's anger stems from their losing faith in future verse related projects. Remember that those who believe the hardest tend to fall the furthest. Once someone reaches that breaking point they go looking for answers. If those answers are lacking they will then lash out at the ones who attempted to help. To make matters worse our continuing faith stokes that anger because we have not reached the same, obvious(to them) conclusion.

I don't think we should dismiss these folks as trolls since they didn't all come here looking for a fight.

I'm not sure about the other one, but if your referring to the girl who declared she was leaving (and then came back) - That had nothing whatsoever to do with the movie, or Firefly, or the 'verse in general.

What it had to do with was far too much white wine and Drunk-txt'rs-syndrome.

The problem is that you can't tell the tone with which someone is typing - sarcasm, jokiness or complete seriousnes, so people (and I admit I did it myself -bad me! slap wristies) react, and its only if they had the good grace to say 'sorry, I was wrong' that the situation is resolved.

In general argument is human nature, it not a bad thing. Nothing new was ever done on the face of this planet by people who all agreed with each other. And when people have an opinion, a belief, they fight to defend it. We are all here through a love of a group of people who faught a war over their opinions. Who lead a criminal lifestyle because they still have those beliefs, and a captain who, by the way, engineers situations where he can 'tussle' over those opinions.

Its lamentable that the 'family tone' has been lost, not knowing what that tone was, I can't comment, but change is also inevitable, and good, and maintaining the 'family' is where your friends come in (by which I mean the guys you have found on this board who you Identify with and have come to like and trust)

There is alway going to negative crap flying around, wherever you go whatever you do, but focusing on the good and pretending like hell that the bad don't exist when it don't suit you is what makes it worth it.

which I think was my argument in that other thread...

Oh I'm not saying you don't deal with the bad, but that thread started by the drunk girl for instance - it went on for so long, people had their say, however they said it, and it just didn't make any difference. I made a (snarky) comment it was ignored and the ranting continued. What I should have done was said what I needed to say and the walked away, ignored it. Gone and focused my energies on something positive. My problem is that I can not just let things lie when I should, so that thread went on way longer than it had a right too, but it ended well, last time I saw it there was ice-cream and chocolate.

And it may be the problem, but hey, its also part of the solution, even if only part of the time(i'm talking threads and nowt else) if you spend your entire time worrying that everything isn't great, then you miss all the stuff that is.

Some people like arguing, some people don't, so if everyone agree's to tolerate then focuses on their own persuits then it will be a better place for them.

With all due respect, I'm not sure that the feeling of success is universal. There was a fair amount of wishful thinking on these boards during the months leading up to the movie (remember the numerous "Serenity will be the new Star Wars" anyone?) and I believe that that wishful thinking let a lot of people down. Hell, I kept what I thought were very moderate hopes (#1 on opening weekend, in the black during initial run), and even I was disappointed. To be honest, although I am coming down off a high, it's the high of a good movie, not the high of "success". I know that it's FFF blasphemy, but I didn't consider the theater run a success. Sorry. IMHO, a lot of the negative vibes lately have to do with a general feeling of disappointment that the BDM didn't do as well as we collectively hoped.
[ /seriousness ]

[ happiness ]
That said, I'm thrilled that there are new folks finding their way to the board. There was an initial rush to the boards after the DVDs came out, as I recall, which changed the dynamic, but things settled down. It'll happen this time, too. The meanies will drop out, the nice people will (hopefully) stick around, and the fan base will be improved. Yay, Darwin!

If you all are talking about me as one of the people who said they were "out" I only meant out of the discussion I was currently in, not out of the board. That discussion was getting very tiring so I took the mature route and opted out of it.

That doesn't mean that I am going to leave the board anytime soon. I haven't posted a lot lately, but that's only because I haven't seen any topics that needed my 2 cents. But I will be sticking around for a long time to come. If you weren't talking about me, then feel free to ignore my post.

No problem with people disagreeing with each other if they keep the dialogue civilized... No sense in trying to bash others and make them believe in your version of the truth, whatever that may be
The way I see it through the lens of reason it will be this way:

1. we get FF back, live happily ever after and contaminate our children with the verse thus improving the overall iq in humanity
we host shindigs, balls with cool costumes and rejoice

2. FF never gets back but we relish the thought of finally meeting the like-minded people and making our own version of multicultural 'verse which we enjoy. Also, live happily ever after and contaminate our children with the verse thus improving the overall iq in humanity.
we host shindigs, balls with cool costumes and rejoice

I think y'all see we'll have many shindigs and rejoicing whichever option comes true, but until we get definitive answer, we live, enjoy life, try to be relaxed and hope
and host shindigs, balls, etc, etc

hope I made your day brighter again, see you all

Queenie, we couldn't ignore you....you are just too interesting. Don't think they were talking about you... but I still say you're too interesting.

I think there could be fans who were disappointed by the movies not doing so well at the box office, but I don't think we need to give up hope for a sequel yet. The DVD sales will be showing up in the UK and the rest of Europe too, we'll see the #'s improve. Chrisisall is right, status is good too, and in this climate of mini-series, or tv movies possible, that will be a good thing.

I've never been a member of an online community before, and I think the folks around here are great. I happen to think that Firefly/Serenity draws it's share of very smart people, that makes for some interesting conversations. Which seems only good to me. Every group has disagreements. We seem to work thru ours pretty good.

I hope no one will draw back from participating or leave the boards, or just be quiet. I think we need each other, and I think the continuation of the 'verse needs all of us.

Although I haven't seen the threads you speak of, I have noticed some *disagreements*. But like thers said, it's to be expected.

I try to look at the good on this site. This is the only place I can go and really talk FF/Serenity.

I feel at home here. I love it here. I just try to ingnore the bad and trolls........

There are too many good people here to leave.

I'm stayin' and I hope those folks come back.

Agreed.
I'm just thinkin' that once Serenity gains enough status (It's hitting seriously excellent status here at UMASS among others) execs will take more notice of how many more potential $'s are there for the gathering. It might take a while, but....

Awww, thanks, Chrisisall. *looks for sniffly-tear icon* Damn! There isn't one! Oh well, you get the point.

As for the other fellow (?) ... I dunno. I think it's unfortunate that they left like that. It's just a difference of opinion.

Sorry to be nosey - well, obviously I'm not sorry as if I was sorry I wouldn't be asking - but would you mind posting a link to the discussions?

I've seen one thread which got a bit heavy, about destroying the world, but I'm not sure that is one of the threads you are talking about.

I must admit, I am new to all this. I've never joined an online forum before and I've loved it so far. I love to come here cause you all have so many different (and very intelligent) views of the series and movie. It makes us all better people looking into the many themes of FF and Serenity and trying to live as better people.
I'm usually pretty good with getting along with people, and I hope I never offend anyone here or drive someone away. I love it here cause there isn't constant bickering and I dislike conversing about politics. It seems to be everywhere here in the US and I'm glad people here can have a difference of opinion and be cival to one another (unlike many political conversations I've witnessed). Well that's my piece. Hope I wasn't too longwinded.

BritChick,

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=17722

There
is the thread about destroying the world, and I really hope that River6213 is doing better.

I can't for the life of me find the other thread, but it was started by a newbie who asked if there was going to be more Firefly and the second poster said outright, no and no and that's the way it was. Pretty down way to greet a newbie and when someone kinda made up for it and apologized for it the person who said it left suddenly, angrily. Told us all to get a life... I felt really bad about it too. Wish they hadn't been so upset.

Anyway... hope that helps and if I can find the link I'll come back here and edit my post and let you know.

Thanks Followmal.

So it was the 'destroy the world' thread. That's kinda reassuring, as I thought ther might have been more since that episode.

Here's the aforementioned pessimist thread. The post that apparently helped start this discussion is by TheOperative2005. Trust me, you can't miss it.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=17882

Personally, I'm sorry he left so angrily. This isn't a pathetic fandom. I've SEEN some pathetic fandoms. I loves my Star Trek, but I would not be caught dead picketing another franchise's film in a Starfleet uniform with signs reading "The Force is Illogical!" To be honest, I doubt most of the folks around here would be caught dead doing something so stupid. Wearing a browncoat to a film is one thing, but that's just weird.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!

WOW....I am just half way through the thread. I don't have time to finish it here. I will when I get home.

Gosh, I had no idea. I'm, I'm just so taken aback. Whoa.....that was a rude awakening for me. I need to take a moment and step back and, well, I dunno what to say.

Call it the mother instinct in me, but I'd love to meet this person and just say, "It's OK" or something.

Watch someone have a field day with this post now.

We just all have to stick together here.

I guess there'll be posts like that.

That was unbelievable.

Thanks for letting me know the post.

CHINDI

hello Fellow Travelers!!

dropping into the galley from the loading bay for some tea and rice.. just want to add..

this site is what we all make it. There will be good days and hard days, but in the end there will be our good wishes toward each other that prevail... like others have said above more eloquently- somedays we fight; mostly we get along just shiny.

PPL will come and go. They are all welcome to stay and feel at home if it suits them. They are free to go in peace if that suits em.

I like it here mighty fine and always have. I visit the neighbors from time to time; but this always felt like home and still does.

so let the negativity flow away and let's get back to restocking the ship. We got a ways to go before she is flying again... and we all know that day is sooner rather than later..

Chindi (chompin on the green protein today)
