Ennio Morricone's a badass when it comes to film scores. I love his work on The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. As far as emotional resonance, though, I'm rather partial to Howard Shore's work on The Lord of the Rings.

I've never really learned the names of score composers but I wanted to give the nod to the guy who did the score for Patton. It's a great piece of music. So I check IMDB so I can actually give the name. Turns out to be number 1 on your list - Jerry Goldsmith. I was also going to nod in the direction of Morriconi for the whole spaghetti western ouvre but I see I was beaten to that as well. Who else? Ooh, ooh. Danny Elfman's work on The Simpsons. Of course in the time it's taken me to type this out somebody has probably already mentioned him so sorry to be all unoriginal and everything.

When Wolverine saves Rogue, it was an exceptionally emotional moment that was RIPE for a sweep-you-off-your-feet theme, and I was so disappointed with what Kamen did. It wasn't BAD--I just imagine what Goldsmith or Poledouris or Zimmer or Williams could have done at that moment. But I guess, everyone is different that way.

Is The Touch a new movie? I haven't heard of it and Basil hasn't scored anything in like forever it seems. I've been out of the country though, so I'm out of the loop.

Speaking of Basil and relative disappointment, was anyone else watching Lord of the Rings and imagining what Basil could have done with those scenes? Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Shore's score. But I kept thinking about what it would have been like if it had Conan-quality music.

For my part in answering this thread, I became a die-hard film music fan after hearing Zimmer's work with Lebo M in The Power of One and later the Lion King. I love Hans Zimmer (Crimson Tide, As Good As It Gets), Basil Poledouris (Conan the Barbarian, Starship Troopers), Mark Mancina (Bad Boys, Speed), Carter Burwell (Conspiracy Theory), Ennio Morricone (Mission).

I loved Greg Edmonson's work in Firefly. It wasn't knock-you-down catchy at first, but the more I listen to it, the more compelling it became, esp in relation to the Verse. I sure wished he coulda scored Serenity. I don't think Serenity was Newman's best work.

So Chrisisall, which of Kamen's scores would you put up there with Poledouris and Goldsmith favorites?

The Touch is a HK flick starring Michelle (Crouching Tiger) Yeoh. Made in 2002, and not the greatest movie ever, but I love it, in no small part due to Basil Poledouris' excellent score. It's hard to find right now, an American release may be imminent, so watch for it!

Kamen was a master of elegant under-statement, musically. His scores didn't have you whistling a theme as such, but they matched the rhythm and intensity of what was onscreen. Matched being the operative word. No Alan Sylvestri here, his stuff never overshadowed a scene.

I'd say go to the Highlander soundtrack and pick anything that wasn't tied into a Queen song, and it stands against the best of Williams.

And speaking of Sylvestri: Back To The Future 1, 2 & 3, Predator 1 & 2, Judgement Night, Judge Dread, Tomb Raider 2 (Man do I love that one), Mummy Returns and Quick And The Dead are my faves from him.

Jerry Goldsmith is my all-time number-one composer, I guess. The guy was phenominal. From The Twilight Zone to The Man From UNCLE, In Like Flint and Patton to First Blood and Star Trek TMP, and of course Gremlins and Planet Of The Apes. He
could do ANYTHING!

I love the scores you mentioned as well. How about David Arnold's score for Cutthroat Island? I thought it rocked! And Don Davis' score for Ballistic: Ecks VS. Sever? Let's hear it for scores better than the flicks they go to!

I also have to mention Joel McNeely's work on Dark Angel, he made a TV show sound like a movie every week!

CTS, have you seen The Fury? A John Williams treat IMHO.

I loved Morricone's work on The Untouchables, as well.
And Danny Elfman's on Batman and Army Of Darkness.

My Sylvestri favorites (besides Back to the Future which is a gimme) are Forrest Gump and Van Helsing. Damn the guy has range.

My fav Goldsmiths are Rudy, 13th Warrior, The Edge (ah that theme!!!), Mulan.

Oh gorram it, I almost forgot Patrick Doyle--he's also in the top three. Hell I'll bump Mark Mancina for Doyle. Indochine is on my desert-island list. That's the score I want my hub to play at my funeral.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Horner yet. My Heart Still Goes On... anyone? Hehe. I LOVE Glory. But everything else sounds just like Glory so I just love Glory.

That's a thread in and of itself. Conan the Barbarian much? And Don Davis' Warriors of Virtue. So glad he finally got to do the Matrix, a major movie, but it didn't get to showcase his considerable talents. And Brian Tyler's Children of Dune? Have you heard that? For a TV movie!

I haven't seen The Fury or The Touch. Will promise to look for it.

Do you collect Chris? I have about 600 soundtracks, including CDRs of some rare ones. When I come back to the States, maybe we can trade.

And I'll concede Highlander is pretty damn spectuacular.

Zimmer is one of my favorites. Foreget that, Zimmer is my favorite, but I also like most of the people he works with. That is Klaus Badelt, and Lisa Gerard mostly. I really love Zimmer's score of Pirates 2. The Kraken theme is likely my favorite piece of score ever. I love all of his Africa type scores also, Tears of the Sun, Black Hawk Down... so good.

I really love Lisa Gerard's Whale Rider score, very nice and soft and emotional.

I like Vangelis also. Alexander was probably his best score (bad movie though) followed by Blade Runner.

I am also a traditionalist and I really enjoy Williams. I mean, the guys the bomb. Star Wars, Superman, Jurassic Park, Memiors of a Geisha. All wonderful scores.

Let me just say the I collect movie scores. I have, well, scores of them. I have more score CDs than band CDs. I see a movie and then I must get the soundtrack.

Right now I'm listening to the soundtrack to Princess Mononoke. It's wonderful.

Zimmer knows how to pick them. Not a one of 'em weak. Badelt's Time Machine and K-19 make me cry--every time. John Powell, Harry Gregson-Williams, Mark Mancina....they're all awesome.

I absolutely love this soundtrack, along with Graeme Revell's music for SciFi's Dune. I especially love the song he wrote, Inama Nushif. So shiny!

I think most of my other favorites have been spoken for (Williams, Horner, Goldsmith, Vangelis). I do also love what Christopher Franke wrote for Babylon 5.

I, too, own more soundtracks than "regular" cds

When I saw Gladiator, at one point I thought "ooh, they've used a bit of Gorecki's Symphony no. 3"... no mention of it in the credits though. Someone needs to slap Hans Zimmer's wrists. On the soundtrack, it's titled "Am I not Merciful?".

Didn't know we were supposed to be picking the top one, just ones that touched us, but thinking about it, yeah, it's definately a contender for my top spot.

However, I don't associate the score with the movie anymore, it hear it as something completely seperate. I saw the movie when it came out and once again since buying it on DVD a few months ago, but have listened to the score many, many times since I bought it not long after it was released. As such, watching the movie actually lessens the emotion of the music for me now.
