+1 on the Bullitt car chase sequence. The best ever shot, thus still the standard by which all others are measured.

Somewhat hijackingly, but perhaps a little bit more relevant to this Board, what's the best space chase sequence, relative to where Serenity is run to ground on Mr. Universe's moon? Now, there's a video game meant to happen.

Not to be picky here, but the best car chases are those with very little CGI. It's just the cars, drivers, and cameras. A space chase (exciting as they are) is by it's very nature entirely a CGI (or at least green-screen) event. You just can't get the same feel.

Add to that the fact that space chases routinely violate the laws of physics (something that can't be done in a good car chase), and you really fall short of the standard set by a good car chase.

That said, I really liked the Mule chase in BDM (due primarily to the way it was filmed), and the crazy ivan on Whitefall.

Y'all should see the chase sequence in The Island...It's a great Sci-Fi film , with Scarlett and Obi-Wan , but the
screen-shattering chase is on the roadway , not in space...

Worth a watch , if not for anything else , for the chase scene alone...

Bullitt! Hands down.

Replace the original Charger and Fastback Mustang with a 09 Challenger and 09 Mustang Bullitt, and Nathan in the Steve McQueen role, and we've got a remake worth making!

I know Dodge also has a Charger, but the current 4 door model just isn't a true Charger.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

My best car chase scenes?

Bullitt is the standard by which all others are judged. But don't leave out The French Connection or The Seven-Ups (with Roy Scheider), or the original Italian Job.

In the modern era, Ronin is tops, followed (perhaps too closely?) by The Transporter (although the second installment seriously weakened the franchise, IMHO), and a toss-up between the remake of The Italian Job and The Bourne Identity.

My problem with the Bourne films is the too-frequent jump-cut sequences, so that you really can't see, follow, or feel the action; it just becomes a big blur of motion, and actually takes away from the chase scenes.

I've heard good things about Taxi, and about another less-well-known French short film called "Rendezvous", in which the filmmaker mounted the cameras on his car and drove his ass off throughout Paris without permission or any traffic control. It's supposed to be quite stunning, but I haven't seen it.

Why yes, yes I have. I was driving the Saturn with the police light on top chasing the green clunker in Toxic Avenger 4: Citizen Toxie.

Yup a valid point. I find it works well with the fighting scenes, really gives it muscle - but with the car chases you're right. You just can't fathom the scope of the chase. This was something I found particularly disappointing about Quantum Solace too. Obviously a trend with filmakers at the moment.

I am of west virginian shine runner ancestry.
Till recently, I was a cab driver.
I own a car that will smack down a 1/4mile in under 16 seconds.

So the better question is when *haven't* I done wacky stuff behind the wheel ?

Best of show was prolly this one....
Especially for how it ended.

I was driving a buddy's hopped up AMC Gremlin X, mid 70's compact with an impressive little V8, and he had a performance intake and a cherry bomb pipe on it but other than that it was bone stock.

This was in W.Va at the time mind you, all up in the back hills.

So we're playin around with it and take it to the parking lot of the local truck stop to smart off to folk by cruisin the yard - which is what you DO when you have a hot rod and you ain't doin nothin worse or workin on it...

And along comes this really tight, cherried out Plymouth Duster, and unlike my buddies car, which is still primer, this one's actually finished, complete with flame job, chrome and whatnot right down to the pair of fuzzy dice, cause, yanno, you GOT to have the fuzzy dice...

Cue bad kung-fu movie showdown music as he enters the parking lot and spots us right after we spot him.
(There's a LOT of unspoken rules to this kinda thing, but there's not a rigid code, you kinda-gotta be from there to understand this, ok?)

He revs, we rev - his is finished, ours ain't, so I figure to give him best, we're packin 360ci to his 300 and a little less, but a Gremlin, frankly, handles like crap and a Duster don't, so he'd likely beat us, no sense denyin it.

I stick my head out the window and yell "Oh I want that!" (meaning his is better, and sayin that without smackin on our own wheels, see ?)

I guess he wanted some fun time, or more of a surrender - he yells back "You like it so much, come an GIT it!" and spins em in a half donut and flies out of the parking lot.

That's the glove in the face, folks, he did NOT think we could catch him and was daring us to try!

Buddy is practially praying I let it go over there in the passenger seat, and when I reach over, snake the plug out of his top pocket and bite off a chunk, grinning - he GRABS for his seat belt like a drowning man grabbin a life preserver... he *knows* the only time on earth I actually chew that nasty stuff is when I plan to do something SO wild I'll not have the convenience of lighting it on fire, you see.

And it was ON.

Now, sure he had a handling edge, but instead of hauling for the highway he went the other way, and folks, that happens to be mostly DIRT, and boy do I love dirt - most people overcontrol, or get scared and let off the gas, try to, you know, actually have control...

But before there was drift racing, there was DIRT, slammin it sideways and controlling the corner with the throttle as you break the wheels loose on PURPOSE and go all a-howlin sideways with rubber grinding and dirt flying to the scream of your exhaust note blowin right through the powerband, it's a certain kinda heaven for them born with a little gasoline in their blood.

I love dirt, always have, and happen to be right better on it than asphalt, thank ya verra muchly, and certainly better than the kid driving that duster, not that I was CATCHIN him, but he wasn't losing me neither.

And then it started to rain, hahaha.

Now, at this point we'd been chasin him a good looooong while - enough so that even if we pulled off now he couldn't really talk any smack at us, cause while he kept us in his rearview the whole time, he couldn't put us AWAY, and that's props to us right there.

And I guess he expected us to do it cause he started letting off, to which my only response other than spittin a chunk of that plug out the window was to triple flash the headlights and keep right on a-comin.

Between that and the rain, I guess he spooked a little cause then we DID begin to catch up, and somewhere through the fog I start to actually HEAR Buddy's endless string of halfass prayers, threats, impreciations and beggin me to let it go - he was also white as a sheet and shaking rather visibly... not that imma STOP, yanno, but I did notice.

He does finally start cutting in the direction of the highway though, I figure he's lookin for an edge and start cutting the arc on him since I got an idea of which way he's gonna go in advance, and just as we get down onto that last long straight before the exit ramp, and I am within about 10 yards of his tailgate finally...

And I hear the sound no one wants to hear, no matter how hard we play the game, the Dusters engine sputters - I quickly back off cause if he blows somethin major I dun want him taking us out with him when it happens.

And so, he finally, almost slowly, coasts to a stop, and we pull up beside to offer our assistance.

"You stubborn jackass, were you gonna chase me all damn day or what ?!"
*blink*
"huh?"
*confused*
"I'm out of gas you lunatic!"

I look down and we're sittin on somewhat past E ourselves, in the mud, in the rain, out in freakin nowhere eighteen and some miles from the nearest gas station... and before cellphones, mind.

"Uh, oops ?"

Buddy never let me drive his car again after that, and Gary, the kid pushing the Plymouth, never really did live that down, getting run completely to ground like that by someone everyone else and their brother knew was too insane to mess with.*

And we did make it within sight of the gas station, all three of us in the gremlin, so we didn't really have to hoof it all that far.

Could you have gotten that on film, it woulda been serious awesomeness.

Fred - Great anecdote. Made me laugh. I kept hearing the Duke Boys theme tune and horn and a "Yeeeeeehaaaaw!!!"

If you did get in on film you'd want your voice over while it's happening because that was a funny recount! Great stuff!

I did pull up to some lights once and some fella in a zooped up Saxo revved me to race him at the turn of green. I nodded and when the lights turned I watched him peel off in a cloud of blue smoke....

...little else to do when you're in a '74 VW Beetle.... Oh well.

Not entirely true...

You can fit a Porsche Carrera engine in a VW Beetle, and it's been done, although less often than cramming a V-8 into a Pinto.

Same basic result tho, a freakin death sled without the braking or handling to make driving it any kind of safe.

But that's never stopped Detroit from sellin ya the same thing when they could get away with it, like the infamous Ford Thunderbolt and even more infamous SuperBird.
