My new 16 x 9 screen does not play all subtitled flicks equally.
If the subtitle is imbedded in the picture (Hero, Tai-Chi Master), all is well.
If the subtitle is in the lower black area that the producer of the disk ASSUMES you'll be seeing due to your ancient 4 x 3 screen (Star Wars, I'm lookin' squarely at YOU), it mostly disappears unless you "zoom out" as if you're watching a 4 x 3 TV show.

Ahhh, life is full of little problems, no?

Well, the subs should only be in the black on older, non-anamorphic disks. So, while a pain, it should be a rare occurance, unless you only buy older disks from garage sales or something. In this case, I assume you're watching the theatrical cut of Star Wars? As it's the only non-anamorphic version.

Anyway, any disks made in the last 6 years or so should be fine.

No, it's the anamorphic Greedo-fires-first one. You have no choice: the subtitles appear mostly outside the actual picture area. Damn Lucas. He'll no doubt put out ANOTHER edition that corrects this.

Not on mine. You might have your picture set up wrong. Assuming you have a standard 16x9 widescreen set (not one of those new ultra-wide LED screens), you should see the subs. Star Wars was shot in 2.35.1 aspect ratio, so even on a widescreen set, there should still be black bars at the top and bottom, where you'd see the subtitles. If the image fills the entire screen - you have something set-up wrong.

As a common refrence point, an episode of Firefly should fill your screen, Serenity should not.

? Do the subtitles appear on & under the picture on your TV? On mine the black bars don't provide enough space for more than one line of subtitles. It looks like this, for example:

Well, that looks about right. I've never measured the space for the subtitles myself, but I've never had a problem seeing them. Never. Don't know what to tell you.

Just went to look at it again, and the player stopped working. Took it back, switched it for another of the same model & now the subs appear as they should! It was just a defective unit after all... and now I feel like I started a whole thread for nothing.

Oh well- a new kitten thread, anyone?

Yeah, that would explain it.

SO, I'll take this opprotunity to say, if anyone is watching A New Hope, try to track down the uber-cool Star Wars: Revisited fan edited version. It's pretty damned awesome, improving on several things. Worth finding.
