I need assistance from the tech savvy. I video recorded an interview with a research participant onto a dvd (from an video/audio set up in the room onto a dvd recorder in the av room) I need to erase the last 10 minutes of it (particularly the audio) for ehtical reasons or I can't use the data for my research project...any ideas as to how I do this? I have windows 7 as an operating system on my new laptop, and windows xp on my old computer. I know there must be a way i can copy the footage to my laptop, edit the footage, and then transfer that to a new DVD...again any help would be welcomed. ta in advance

Well, the DVD isn't really an editable format, so you'll have to rip it. I've not done it myself, but I think the program VirtualDub will do this, and I think they have a 30 day trial period during which you can use the software for free. Then you can use editing software to trim the end off and re-burn to a new DVD. If you have Windows Movie Maker in either of your machines that should do it, but there are lots of editing packages out there.

It can show you how to go about it and offers links to lots of software and has plenty of 'How To' guides.
A lot of the software is free and as what you require is relatively simple in video editing terms you won't need to go paying out any cash for it.

As it's a home-made disc (as opposed to retail) you may be able to just copy the files from the DVD to your hard drive. If not then you will need to rip it.
DVDShrink and DVDFab HD Decrypter are both free and easy but there are many others. They should do for what you need.

For editing you'll need something that can read the .vob format. VirtualDub is good, so is AviDemux but they may seem complicated if you're completely new to this. There are others out there that can automate the process more so that when you save the file it will be in the DVD format.

For burning to a new blank disc I recommend ImgBurn. Again it's free, reliable and detects what you are putting on disc so that it burns it in the right way (i.e. the right file system).

Feel free to ask any more questions.
