NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is shutting down its reactors as its storied career comes to a close.

The USS Enterprise finished its 25th and final deployment on Sunday when it returned to its home port in Norfolk, Va.

After more than 50 years of service that spanned the globe, the ship will never move on its own power again. The ship's fuel will be removed in Virginia, and then it will eventually be towed to Washington state to be scrapped.

The Enterprise is the Navy's second-oldest ship, after the USS Constitution. It has participated in every major conflict since the Cuban Missile Crisis, and its airplanes targeted insurgents in Afghanistan during its last deployment.

The bad news is it'll never be a museum ship because it's nuclear powered and they have to dismantle most of it, they may try to have another carrier named Enterprise in the future.

So, the nuke power plant on board is what is keeping it from being a museum? Pity.

At least she didn't go out like this...

( sorry 'bout that, Chris )

There are actually 6 different reactors, IIRC.
They pretty much have to cut up the hull to remove them all.
There's talk they might preserve the island for a museum.

I had been hoping the next new carrier would take the name, but the next two will be the Gerald Ford and another JFK.

I hate current tradition of naming carriers after politicians...

Actually, any Diesel engine can run on that in a pinch, Whozit - although it'll work a lot better if you have an SVO* conversion kit.
An SVO Diesel-Hybrid TDI engine is quite capable of getting triple digit MPG without using an ounce of petroleum, so it's not actually a bad idea - especially if you could use a clear protective surface with solar cells underneath for the flat-top.

Bonus points that the eco-hippies would be twisted in knots trying to figure out whether they should support an ecologically conscious engine of warfare.

I suppose that's good news.
