they look very cool, but sadly require that you be slim petite and probably asian to cary them off. I think i'm going to go with the old standby f raiding the lined cupboard.

Or maybe slightly more fancy than that.

I found one reference book, though theres a lot of reading involved, but it did have a great version of yours Serenity. Basically, if you go to a site called The Costumers Manifesto, they have costume history all neatly sliced up for referencing. A lot of of the greek links are broken, but theres still enough there.

Still looking for the place that gives you the step by step though.

Of course you can be Eros SR, but does that mean you will be coming next year? *fingers crossed for good luck*

I still call Hades. If I'm around.

WOAH! That website is a bit overwhelming! Lots of pretty pictures, though.

It doesn't look like those outfits would be too hard to make. I like the chiton when it's buttoned up the arms to make sleeves. That's pretty.

SR: If you come as Eros, will you walk around in a loin cloth with a bow and arrows? *snerk*

Edit: OH, and I talked to my brother on the phone last night and completely FORGOT to mention the gods thing.

Gawd. In this country you could probably buy your alchohol in mothercare now. And they wonder why we have a binge drinking epidemic.

Did anyone in England see Dom Joly's Happy Hour? With that guy in South Carolina (possibly) making moonshine? and they couldn't understand a single word he was saying, and sometimes even the subtitiles they gave him just read '?????????????... something about possums?'

that was amusing.

Well, i got a list of the major, most recoognisable player, their symbols and any specific things they wore (kiddies books a bout greece in the fts when its not busy are so useful!)

I was going to post them here, but, shall we resurrect the costumy thread? then we can keep updating the list when theres a new snippet of information, and keep track of who's going as who, and share photo's and ideas and interesting pictures we've come accross (like i've seen loads of statues of Anthena, but don't want to fill up this thread)

Shall we do that?

Mai! How about Hebe? Goddess of Youth, who i think married Heracles, or Hestia, goddess of the hearth and home (not very glamorous sounding, but she was the most worshipped - every single greek houshold had a shrine to her)

I'm wavering, was thinking about Hera (i like peacock feathers)

God of the underworld, Hades also know as pluto, is usually associated with a sceptre, the three headed dog Cerberus, a cap of invisibility, the key to the underworld, and a two pronged staff. Trees/plants sacred to him are the cypress and narcissus.

I've no idea of their actual validity, it was a kiddies book - but i thought information like that would be good for choosing colours and patterns etc.

It all helps.

Ok, i'm going to start the new thread, but maybe not tonight, i'm tired. But sometime this weekend.

Sigh. Guess I gotta find my galoshes (wellies, or so I understand, for the Britfolk). A god's gotta do what a god's gotta do, and so what if the sheep get nervous.

Though I kinda don't mind being noted for the seduction of Khione on the same night as Apollon.

No cozen, both Hermes and Apollo slept with the same woman, Khione, on the same night. Apollon (Apollo) is a man-type god. And, because Greek mythology is full of this kind of stuff, she gave birth to two different babies, one by each guy. Though, how they could tell whose baby was whose is beyond me!

It also may be interesting to note that she was killed by Artemis (Apollo's sister), whom she pissed off by claiming to be prettier or something.

By the way, just because I'm a big Greek nerd, I would just like to inform all and sundry that "theoi" is simply the plural form of the word "theos" which means, "god".

Also, I knew the answer to final Jeopardy last night: "The word "toxic" comes from the ancient greek word for this weapon." The answer? "arrow". The word in greek is "atoxos". I felt all smart-like!

Okay, gonna go be nerdy somewhere else now!

Mythology is fun! It's not so much about what they DID, it was about the symbolism behind it, about the lessons the stories were teaching the ancient greeks, about how they were trying to explain and make sense of their world. It's fascinating!
